I hope it can help : I had a quite similar problem when i tried to install UV on another PC: I installed my 2.0 version first and tried it: that was good. Then i successivly installed and try all the patchs: 2.10: OK , 2.11: OK, 2.20 : OK but with 2.30 : NOT OK !! the game no longer worked when i tried to start it. I tried to launch the game with the shortcuts, the .exe file, but i saw nothing else that the first screen of UV. So i uninstalled everything and did it again, for the same result...

When i launched the game, I noticed that the PC tried to read on my Cdrom but it did as if it found nothing in it. i decided to install the game and patchs using my DVDrom and not my Cdrom and, miracle , UV worked, even on version 2.30 !!!

The update program is called True update. That info is if you ever get it to run. I have to agree, it sounds like a bad disk to me. Wish I could help you, but I am no computer guru.

The default drive is C: if I am not mistaken.

Depends on how your computer is set up.

If you have just one hard drive and it isnt compartmentalised then you should have just one local drive to install on (C: )

D Drive is usually reserved for your CD rom or DVD (the thing you put the disk into), and if you have a second CD rom or DVD drive, then this is usually setup as E: drive.

Either way when you install, just follow the prompts and dont try to install into anything other than the default settings.

But especially as it is asking for a second disk, your disk is stuffed, no two ways around it.

Mate if you lived in Sydney, Id offer to come around and fix it myself.

yes you can. Try to load the game into the default directory (it should point to this automatically.

C:\Matrix Games\Uncommon Valor

those error messages are due to trying to load the files not in the default directory, I think there are some load files that are loaded, then the load program looks for those load files during the install process, and if they are not where they expect to find them then you have problems.

ps where did you get the disk from?

if you have already installed the game on to the default drive, then I see no point in trying again.

By the way what operating system are you on.

Then there shouldnt be any problems. On XP there can be some issues (XP related not game), but on 98 none that I know of.

At the risk of pointing out the obvious, the word disk used in this thread means different things in different contexts. You need a new disk and you need a new disk drive are two different things. One is the round, flat, shiny thing that looks like a plate with a hole in it. (My mother said I ate off one of these when I was a kid - I have no idea what she meant.). The other is the thingy you put the aforementioned disk into.

From the comments here, it appears that some *disk drives* can cause problems trying to run UV. Going back to the matrix store and getting another *disk* will likely never help you. What you might try instead is to install a new *drive*. You can install them yourself and they are relatively cheap ($25-35?), it basically entails plugging in a few cables and maybe setting a jumper. Follow the directions in the box with the CD ROM and most people will be fine. If you are worried about it, you can probably find someone to install a new one for you for a modest fee ($10-20?).

I would also check the specs on the game. I do not have the box around anywhere, but compare the specs to the specs on your computer. It is possible you lack enough ram, etc. to run the app. You noted that you will get another computer in a couple weeks so all of this might be a waste...

lol

its not even my copmputer

so trying to put a new drive in even by myself is out of the question

i honestly think its the game disk and not the drive, cuz the drive runs my other games fine

and i dont think its the spex, since my computer geek brother in law- (same 1 that tried to make it wrk) himself said that it should run, even tho this computer is 6 YEARS old

Ordinarily, I would agree with you...

However, someone posted above that loading from a dvd rom rather than their CD rom made a difference. That suggests that there might be an issue with *some* CD ROM drives with respect to UV. Given that UV checks for the presence of the CD in the drive and it is so easy to copy CD's, I suspect that there might be a bit of unusual code in UV. Hypothetically, the code works with almost all CD drives.... except yours and the one referred to above. Any non-standard code, or even a bug in the drivers/firmware/etc. of your CD-ROM, could be at the heart of your issue. Were it an option, changing your CD-ROM would be something to try, especially given that you are pretty he11 bent on getting it installed and playing UV... however, I ran across something else that might make more sense.

The following is for anyone that follows that might run into the same issue. It is kinda technical and *is not* something I suggest you try marky. Show it to your computer nerd brother in law.

Ron Saueracker mentioned in another thread that UV would only run from a "master drive". I am not entirely sure I understand his meaning, but I think he is referring to IDE Master versus Slave. Quick explanation: Lots of hard drives, cdrom drives, and dvd roms use an interface in the computer called IDE. It is fairly standard for a computer to have two IDE connections, each capable of handling two devices on it.

If two devices are installed on one connection, one is the Master and one is the Slave. Which is which is usually determined by settings on the devices themselves (often using jumpers on the drive itself). By jumping (connecting) the right pins on each device, you can change the Master and Slave on most configurations. The proper configuration is usually printed on a label or embossed on the device near the jumpers to tell you what jumper setting is what.

If the drive you are trying to run is the slave on an IDE connection, you might have a problem. Usually, computers are shipped with the CDROM as the master on one IDE connection and the hard drive as the Master on the other. If a second hard drive gets installed, the new drive is likely to assigned to be the Master and the CD ROM gets to be a Slave.

Because the vast majority of computers never get a second hard drive, and because the vast majority of those that do probably leave the CD ROM as the master on the connection, a very small minority of people probably encounter the bug. Grats on hitting the lottery marky?

I have that problem. I have two hard disk drives on one channel and a CD-DVD ROM reader and a CD-ROM burner on the other channel. I can only install from the primary CD-ROM reader and the UV disk must be in that drive to work. Any other combination fails. It is the copy protection, the firmware and I believe a MicroSoft OS problem. Both CDs are good Liteon models.
