Spent the day at the Canadian War museum here in Ottawa, Canada. Its sort of a small museum compared to say the Smithsonians but I went becasue I heard real war veterans would be there! I made this WWII pilot talk to me for must have been close to an hour! Wow, amazing stuff. I regret the place closed down before I had a chance to grill the Navy officer, Merchant marine officer and these two WWII infantrymen. I figured I'd wait till next year and go earlier.
There were many others such as nurses, many support people (my grandmother stood on top of buildings at night during BoB to find German planes! I'll make her go next year) and veterans of other wars. There was a really old man in the WWI section of the museum who was getting lots of attention so I wonder if he was a WWI vet! He was speaking french so I couldn't understand, I guess when you are raised in the USA it isn't always an advantage. Hopefully he is around next year to bother! I'll also bring a camera. Looks like Canada always gives more than her share in these conflicts. WWI seemed especially brutal, seemd like the Canadians were just cannon fodder, poor fellas. In one action, 700 went "over the top", only 68?!?! made it back. They charged among other thing 5 machine gun posts! - of course later on they had their greatest moment at Vimy ridge. Just leave the hard stuff for the Candians, EH?
I was also impressed with the small but good peace-keeping display. Many Canadians have lost there lives doing peace-keeping, in fact they are all over the world as we speak. Mind you these guys aren't standing off miles away with missles or anything, they are in the mix everyday.
Anyways I'll end this post, but for anyone living near Ottawa go to the Canadian War museum next Rememberance Day! I'm definatly going to be more prepared next year with lots of questions, and my camera.
