I just bought a DVD player for my TV.

Heheh, I know, I'm coming late to the DVD craze

However, now that I have experienced the joys of DVD quality movies, I am drawing up a list of "must" buy movies to get.

I have a lot of movies on VHS, and most aren't worth the extra expense of buying them on DVD as well.

I definitely want to get all the Lord of the Rings DVDs, especially the extended versions that are packed with extra movie footage and extras.

I am also looking forward to getting the extended version of Das Boot due out on June 1, which will be six hours long.

Yes, Band Of Brothers for sure. Also:

1)Apocalypse Now Redux.
2)Patton - Because of Wide Screen addition.
3)Longest Day- Same as above.
4)A Bridge Too Far.

Others:

1)From The Earth To The Moon.
2)Looney Tunes Golden Collection
3)The Outer Limits - Original B&W Series
4)The Twilight Zone- Original B&W Series
5)The Simpsons
6)Final Fantasy-Special Edition

When I was looking through the movies/series available for DVD, I was amazed at what is being offered - just about everything that was ever done for TV or the cinema.

Now that I have experienced DVD, I can now see the urge to "escalate" to surround sound and a larger TV.

Oh, lordy, does it ever end?

Von Rom, if you're a rock fan, you're in for a treat. I have a few concert DVDs, and one of the best is Led Zeppelin DVD. Also recommended is the Rolling Stones' "Four Flicks".

Well there just ain't no point in suggesting titles of classic must haves if they ain't on DVD right :)

So with that in mind, this is what I DO have on DVD and I consider them fundemental must have films.

Now many have posted to many threads of what they call "great" movies. Thus far, I have heard people slag virtually every film ever made. Including Band of Brothers.

Therefore, I have listed what I bought, and generally speaking, when a person will actually buy the film, that has to mean it was worth watching more than once, period.
Regardless of whether we thought this that or the other thing about what was wrong with the vehicles, the uniforms, the acting, the special effects etc etc etc.

I have seen World at War on DVD and Victory at Sea, but the price tag keeps it a triicky target for me. It seems a lot of good vhs documentary has not made the move to DVD, must be to small a market.

Outside of the military line, I have to say, nothing really equals the 4 disc sets released for Lord of the Rings. I have the first two, and fully intend to get the 3rd.

My main pre occupation though, is anime :) I have hundreds of anime DVDs of some of the best in anime (as well as some stuff I am sure you guys would laugh at hehe).

I am very fussy on music video DVDs, but have some ABBA, some Queen and got Rush in Rio for christmas.
Generally, I prefer the group was already major league famous before I will buy the video DVD. So just having a couple of hits, and then disappearing a year later means they ain't worth my money. Which explains why I have bought almost nothing from new groups made in a decade. Most of it is one hit wonder garbage.

Well the only film I own on DVD is 'The Evil Dead 3: The Army of Darkness'. Total 'Schlock Horror' and one of the funniest films ever made. Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell at their 'B Movie' best.

Music wise the Led Zep DVD is a must have as is the 'Concert for George Harrison'

The best war movies/series have been mentioned (Band of Brothers!!!!), so I'll add my two cents in other categories...

Royal Tennenbaums (Director's comments are awesome)
Mr. Show (All seasons)
Simpsons (All seasons)
Caddyshack with the director's commentary. Lots of deleted scenes.

That being said, can we force Tom Hanks and the folks who did Band of Brothers to get together every year or so to make something? They could re-do all the old classics, then tell stories we haven't seen.... Tarawa, Iwo, Pelilieu, etc. They're the only folks I've seen do the war and those who fought the justice they deserve - I just wish they'd do more....

Well, madflava, there's a thread on the SPWAW forum called "A Band of Brothers for the Pacific". Hanks & Spielberg are teaming up to do this very thing, so we will probably see this in 2005, to coincide with the 60th anniversary of the end of the war.

Well, I bought both extended versions of the Lord of the Rings. I also had a couple of extra speakers kicking around, so I hooked them up to my stereo, which is connected to my TV, which is connected to the 'ol DVD. . .

It's not quite professional surround sound, but I still notice quite an improvement.

With that done, I decided to watch the first part of the Lord of the Rings. It was even better than I had expected. The extra 30 minutes of footage added to the movie really added to the story and filled in a lot. I especially liked the extra footage in the Elfin lands. Truly a magnificient achievement.

If anyone hasn't seen the LoTR, or intends to buy the DVD, get the extended version of the first two parts. Well worth the few extra dollars. Really a classic IMO.

I'm looking forward to part two - it contains 43 extra minutes of film footage. And I haven't even touched all the extras on these DVD discs.

I am truly sold on DVD - what a difference!

I also notice that many of the older movies are out as well - and they are very cheap - Bridge Too Far is only $10.00, etc.

blade runner, pulp fiction + fight club are probably must buys...depending on your taste of movies.

also most of the war movies others also mentioned.

i would love to see the longest day + a bridge to far on dvd, but i�m
broke in the moment and for rent they are not available. also i think
the bridge of remagen would be cool.

I have others, but these are ones I go back to when I'm bored. All of them are widescreen and are the extended/directors cut when possible except the 2 lords of the ring movies.

Hmm wouldn't mention it normally, but my Clumbia House DVD catalogue came in the mail today.

Columbia House by the way, is NOT the inexpensive way to go, but when you live in a wretchedly poorly served small town dvd retail wise, you don't get a lot of choice eh.

Weeeeeeeell the current bulletin is actually rife with good deals this issue for once. Military and old classic westerns that is. You can find run of the mill comedy and general titles anywhere, even in this town hehe.

I am only one purchase from fulfilling the obligation purchases, and it will be simple this month.

Got these tempting me...
Flying Leathernecks
Pork Chop Hill
Several Clint Eastwood westerns (he got featured this issue)
Hamburger Hill (hey it made the 19.95 selection so I will consider it)
Cast a Giant Shadow

There are actually several other titles in the 19.95 slot, but i already own those hehe.

And yes, I try to get the obligation purchases at 19.95 (hey I ain't rich eh hehe).

Quite a few other titles in there as well of serious merit (just more than 19.95 :) ).

This company is reachable through online as well guys. This might not be a bad time to check them out.

I'm a fan of Blade Runner and Pulp Fiction - two unique movies - don't see enough of these. It is tough trying to find Pulp Fiction on DVD though.

And in Canada, A&B Sound has tons of DVD movies on sale, including Longest Day and A Bridge Too Far for only $10.00 each.

You fellas have listed lots of great suggestions for movies. Some I had forgotten about such as Gettysburg and Kelly's Heroes.

I also bought "Amadeus" - it contains an extra 22 minutes of footage - one heck of a movie.

If anyone is going to buy Master & Commander, I would also suggest getting "Mutiny on the Bounty" (with Marlon Brando) and "Bounty" (with Mel Gibson). All great 18th Century sailing movies.

BTW, has anyone seen "The Last Samurai"? Is it any good? Is the DVD worth buying? It just came out today.

I should also suggest the movie "The Perfect Storm" (by Peterson of Das Boot fame).

BTW, I was wondering: do the better cable connections (the ones with the gold plated connectors) make much of a difference in visual and sound quality vs the standard cable type that comes with the DVD?

Heheh - all these great new gifts and it ain't even the holidays. . .

The Last Samurai is like a lot of films out there.

Sure some can find "technical" flaws if they sit there with a microscope. But the fact remains, it's on my list.

I watched it, and I considered it a refreshingly nice change of pace. I thought it was a superb rewatchable film.

Been my experience, if your TV sucks, the cables won't matter.

If your dvd player sucks, the cables won't matter.

And if you have a good tv and a good dvd player, odds are the cables won't make enough difference to count (unless you are unusually anal :))

The best is the 1935 version with Charles Laughton. It ranks with some of the most important movies of the first half of the 20th century. It finally came out on DVD just a few weeks ago.

That's what I figured. There were some cables selling for $150.00

I did buy one set for $19.99 just to be on the safe side. I figured it wouldn't hurt
