Just out of curiosity: Your tank is immobile in an advanced position. there is an inf squad and an inf at platoon equally close in good MG range. who do you aim at? the easy target infantry that probably loses 3 or 4 men or the harder-to-hit but dangerous AT element?

Hmmm....it depends(TM). Up close, both squads are as deadly a threat to the tank.
I'd probably try to take out the AT team first, and if it fails (or succeeds - whatever) use my last one or two MG salvoes to pin down the infantry. Now, if I'd play, it'd be most unlikely that the immobilized tank was stuck there alone, so I'd probably have squads nearby to support. So - AT crew.

Depends on the situation. If your tank is a KV-2 and it's 1941, I'd say kill 'em all by numbers and mop up with your cavalry. If your tank is a PzIII and the AT unit is a bazooka, well don't rattle his cage. Instead, call in some 50mm mortars (or bigger) but 50's will do the job, then pop smoke.
Bring in some infantry to bail you out if you can. A gutsy move would be to rout the enemy inf with your own inf or cavalry then dismount the tank and shoot at the bazooka with your misc weapons........ Nah, smoking is better for you in this situation. Good luck

Thanks... I'm pretty new to this and mostly did higher level strategy (WiR Korps level etc) before

For what it's worth, I always check the hit percentage first, but all being equal I'd take out the AT first.

Yeah, I'd take the AT first, too.
I figure the Infantry squad will have to advance to be a threat, and therefore, subject to my Op fire first.

The way I would do it is this: If you have Infantry with your tank, use that infantry to take out the AT unit first and then use your tank to destroy or suppress the enemy infantry. If you only have a tank, check the distance to the AT unit. If he has a reasonable chance to hit your tank with opportunity fire then cover your tank and retreat. If he doesn't, then destroy or suppress that unit first. Remember that if you use your tank to fire on an AT unit, he will probably get a chance for opportunity fire against you and if he has a reasonable chance to kill your tank, he probably will. The same is true if you fire on the infantry unit with your tank - the AT unit will probably get a chance to use opportunity fire on you tank, again with a chance of killing your tank. I usually make a habit of using my Infantry to take out the enemy's AT units and using my armour to take out his other infantry. The other point is that if it is at all possible, use artillery to suppress the enemy's infantry and AT units - small mortars, infantry guns, AA guns, and AT guns firing HE are especially useful here.

Have I overlooked something? Sometimes my 88 shoots he and gets 35 % on infantry instead of 2% but how do I manually switch?

A response to the first question: depending how close the infantry and AT are. But dont forget to use the smoke screen as a last resort if You have one (the d key). It can give You the time to call in help from other units nearby.
Try to suppress booth as soon as possible, even the slightest suppression has an effect on their chance to hit.
