I downloaded version 8.0 recently and then followed that up by downloading (and extracting, etc) the 8.01 patch.

Question: The main game and my mega campaigns all say version 8.0. Is there a way to check and see if I successfully loaded 8.01?

(I'm not exactly a computer wiz, sorry.)

It says ver 8,0 even if it is 8,01, But on the game menu click true update and it will connect to Matrix and check for updates and tell you if there is a newer ver or patch.

OR
You can check the register key, but dont change anything there..
type regedit on the run menu,
expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
and expand SOFTWARE
and then MATRIX GAMES
and finaly mark Steel Panters World at War
and it will say on the last line in the window to the right "version v8,01"

This is already the way to go, Mother.
The 8.01 fix (it's not exactly a patch), has to be downloaded via TrueUpdate.
Only thing to know is that it will still show "8.0" after the update, cause it was not a patch, as I said (just fixing the MGs_disabling_tanks bug).
