First let me make it clear, IMHO WiF is the greatest game out there, period. I am looking forward to cWiF as much as the rest of you on this forum and I appreciate Matrix taking up the project, even if it is going slow. Meanwhile, I have been enjoying a game I read about on another forum that is making my wait much easier. It is Russo-German War by Schwerpunkt Games. It is an operational level game of the most significant theatre of WWII. Division level with week length turns and 10 mile hexes. If you play the campaign game a turn takes a good hour or more! The AI is good enough to teach you the basics of game play and strategy. It has PBEM capability. In short, it is an excellent game that will satisfy your need to play a really big game that is both fun and challenging.

Abandonware third reich. You can get it free from underdog games with the latest patch allready installed plus manual in pdf. A bit complex at first but when you get to know the system the game gives out plenty of wargaming goodness. And the AI is truly a tough cookie. Just try doing better than a stalemate with germany.

Are you able to get this running on a XP machine?

Thanks! And what a great resources underdog games is!

It blew my mind to go to download it and it was only 7.3 meg!!!

Wow how things have changed, last night I downloaded America's Army and the zip was 728 meg!!!

Can't even fit it on a CD.

Anyway, I've always wanted a copy of 3rd Reich and it sounds like the patch has made it a much better game.

Can't wait to get started this weekend...

BTW, ran fine in Windows XP for me.
Didn't try to setup sound but frankly don't give a crap if the sound works!

I suggest you start by playing allies on defence in the campaing 1939->1946. It gives the most room for making few errors while learning the system. Also save the game in each turn for there is a random crash. Its a very rare one (once or twice per 12 hour game) but it really sucks if you havent saved.

Reading the manual helps a lot and it also gives a lot of strategy tips. By playing the allies in the 1939 campaing at best you should be able to hold fast in france and start a british offense in the mediterranian as soon as the italians join the war.

Also take a notice of the odds in the attacks. 2:1 is enough but might mean losses. 3:1+ is pretty safe.

The axis side of the game is much harder. My latest and most succesful axis game yet bugged down in russia by late 1942 while the allies made a landing in france. Now I can only hope for a stalemate at best.

As for allies though I have been able to win a decisive victory twice now (allied victory before summer of 1944) with normal difficulty.

My first post - I am going to try Third Reich sounds great. What about the classic - Clash of Steel. Simple and challenging. Also, has anyone been able to get Operational Art of War II to run on XP? Any other good Wargames out there?

By the way, I should point out that the underdog site has a nasty habit of dumping spyware onto your pc.....if you have Ad-aware or some other program that detects spyware, I recommend running it after visiting Underdog.....

Oddly enough Joe, I have the original cd, and it won't install, whereas I was able to get the Underdogs downloaded files to run on XP, although the sound effects are mangled enough you have to just forgo them.

I have a detailed explanation text file that illustrated how to use/install the downloaded file, but I am sure it has no value to getting the cd to cooperate.

Operational Art of War II Elite Edition runs in XP for me with no otherwise noteworthy troubles. I replaced my Vol 1 and Volume II with CoW edition just because nothing I tried made Vol 1 work on XP.

The following is a text file I have made for the game, assuming you are not using the cd itself. This will not mean anything to anyone not using the RAR compressed file assortment though.

If you have the RAR set of files, all you really want are 7 files. One is a zip file called 3rdreich the other 6 are called 3rdreich.ao1 through 6. The first file uncopmpresses the others. Plus of course there is the patch file.

OK, here it is :

Note to XP Users This runs better in Win'98 but I have been able to get Third Reich to run on my computer. XP will need some extra adjustment to be done.

The files should be decompressed using RAR utilty.

The patch. Extract ALL of the files into the game directory. Click "yes" to over-write the files.

Locate the file called "setup.exe". Double click on it and select auto detect for your sound. You will need to use the arrow keys on your keyboard to navigate this screen. It will prompt you, so just go ahead with the auto detect. Once done, click on the test panel, and if you hear sounds, you are done. Click any key, and on the next panel, select "OK". It will prompt you to save the configuration. Click "OK" and exit.

Finally, right-click on "3r2.exe". Select "properties". Select "program", and at the bottom of this panel, you'll see a pull-down menu called "Run: Normal window". Select "Maximized" instead. Click "apply". Now at the top of the panel select the "screen" tab. At the top, under "Usage" click on the "Full-screen" button. Click on "apply", then exit by clicking on "OK".

To start the game, click on the "MSDOS3r2" file.

Any suggestions on how to get Clash of Steel to play on Win XP - I keep getting a runtime error 200. I downloaded the game from underdog (good tip on the spyware) I use to own the game as part of a CD pack with War in Russia and Carriers at War (or something) I tried the TPPATCH program to fix the problem but it does not work. Thanks

I actually beta-tested Third Reich PC, and I thought the finished product wasn't bad. I'm not as sure about the AI as other posters, but it does give you a good game.

How about Strategic Command? It certainly harkens back to "High Command" and "Clash of Steel." Fun beer-and-pretzels gaming.

Hi, can anyone help me with the underdog Third Reich download. I type in the vBRfN code but then get the 'Oops there has been an error!' page. I can download
other games on the site.
Thanks for any help
Chris

I managed to get the download. It crashed after 5 minutes play which wasn't very encouraging - but have since played another hour without any problems so fingers crossed. I used to play 3rdReich against myself as a kid - so anything is better then that :)

(I used to lose as well)

For starters, the Underdogs tech section of their website has the complete description of how to get Clash of Steel: FE to work on Windows XP. Start in the forums and looks for a link near the top that says tech help or something like that, then go through the index looking for Clash of Steel and you'll find it. Mine is working just fine. (Hint, you'll need a utility that slows down your computer, moslo I think).

My question is regarding Third Reich from underdogs. I'm trying to read the manual and it seems messed up, sentences left hanging, pages skipping, etc. Has anyone else tried reading this thing and had better luck. I've never played the board game and so some tips on playing the computer version would be fantastic, or if you have a clean version of the manual pdf or otherwise I would appreciate an email. Thanks!

Hi miclogic,
I don’t know why but apparently Acrobat Reader 6.00 is not compatible with the underdog's manual .PDF file, I tried with Acrobat Reader 5.01 and all worked correctly.
Hope this can help you.
Bests regards.
