Firstly I think that the Indian/Gurkha Kukri is poorly represented. The current range of 4 should be 0 as it is a hand to hand weapon. I think that it's accuracy should therefore be increased in line with it's close quarter effectiveness to say 24.
Secondly, in the UK (and ANZAC and Indian oobs) where is the bayonet? Weapon 191 should be allocated to this splendid weapon with similar characteristics to the Kukri (as the Hun does not like it up them).
Finaly UK OOB 100 British Infantry should have the Lewis gun changed for the Bren as the Lewis was hardly ever used by British front line troops and the rifle grenade should be replaced by the bayonet. This will enable the Queen of the battlefield to behave properly.

Hi Tim, ..I think bayonets and other HtoH weapons are probably factored into the Melee combat routines and/or National Characteristics? Kukri..is this the famous Ghurkha combat knive (..the one that even would make Crocodile Dundee proud )? Range 4? Really strange!
Try editing it as you mentioned and report results here, I also would be interested how it works! regards _________
Harry

Uh? Eh?
Cocodrile Dundee? Kukris with range 4?
Perhaps they are using the Kukris as Boomerangs?

Did you look up the range of 4 in the editor or the game ? A 4 in the editor makes for a 1 in the game, and that's the closest range you can make (0 does not work).

Yes the Kukri would have made Coc Dundee proud. The issue Kukri has an inward curved blade about 12" long and is very sharp. (In Nepal, they commonly make the waepon from old truck leaf springs). I read the range of 4 in the editor, but my question is, if bayonets, knives and whatever are factored into the melee/nation characteristics then why is the Kukri listed as a separate weapon? and why do the Brits seem to do so poorly in a melee when the bayonet is every Brit soldier's favourite weapon?..just ask the Argentinians if you want recent evidence.

The range 4 in the editor means range 1 in the game (remember to divide ranges by 4 due to the spIII legacy of the code). As it is the Kukri has an he kill of 9, as good as most lmgs, better than all the smgs. It doesn't need any increase in effect. It helps to make up for the low rating given the Ghurkas, making them bears at 1 hex range.
thanks, John.

Yrrch, the Tommies are no slouches in CQB, if I may offer a purely anecdotal bit of evidence from last night: British squad takes fire, reducing it to 8 men, and retreats into a hex containing an undamaged, unmoved 14-man Japanese squad. Results of Banzai attack (with gratifying sound file) : 8 British casualties and 6 Japanese! Not the results I was hoping for (since I was playing the IJA). This is in Spring of '44. Perhaps your not-so-hot squaddies are early war? Anyhow, one data point proves nothing, but I thought I'd share. Jeff

OK Guys, I admit defeat here. Firstly the Kukri actually has a range of 1 hex. (I read the editor and forgot to divide by 4). Secondly, if melee factors are included in with national characteristics then I guess the bayonet is not required as a separate weapon, although that makes me wonder why the Kukri is included. I just felt that as the bayonet is such an important part of the Tommy's mystique then perhaps it ought to have been included, especially when you look at photos of British Infantry advancing through smoke screens in the desert with rifles at the high port with sword bayonets fitted. Remember that the later spike bayonet was always unpopular with the older sweats as it was not thought to be as effective. Finally, I can remember exercising with a bayonet attached to my SA80 less than 3 years ago!
Thanks for the debate. Perhaps we should let this one wrap up? More power to Matrix for a terrific effort.
