Still learning, so please bear with me;
1. The object – as it was historically is for the IJN to take PM, correct?
2. So…I just formed a TF around a bunch of AP’s and a couple of DD’s at and am loading up the 17th SNLF and a bunch of fuel and supplies. How long do troops take to load?
3. Will they lose morale if they wait for the food and fuel?
4. Should I take my CV and CA TF’s – and the AP TF (once loaded) and push on for PM – or should I make sure I take care of the US CV threat and pound on PM from Rabual first?
5. I notice that all I am going to get from the homeland are some 17th Army rear area troops at Truk and a couple of Maru’s – so why should I wait around?

Thanks,
Barkhorn.

Can't remember how many allied troops are based at Pm but I thing you will need more that an snlf unit to take the base, more like a full division or two plus supporting engineering, arty and AA units. For an invasion TF you are better using smaller ap's for troops 1000,1500 pointers ( AP'S load and unload troops quicker the AK'S). Then load AK'S with supplies again using the smaller ships as the unload quicker and cost you less points if you loose any. They will load fairly quickly at a decent size port ( Rabul/truk) an you will not suffer any morale hits when loading them, although they may suffer some disruption and a little fatigue. Best to try and kill the allied CV's First and as early as poss., for the first few months they are week with very small fighter complements and ****ty torp bombers.

Use your Carriers & bombardment runs from shortland along with bomber strikes from rabul to beet up on Pm for a while until you are ready. Remember to keep an eye on their fatigue and weather or you will incure major opp losses Use your surface combat Tfs ( use set to follow orders on one the ap/ak tfs) to escort your invasion tfs into the invasion hex to give added protection against air an sea attacks.

Remember to grab lunga as well as build it up.

Keep asking question its he only way to learn, after two years i still pic up new techniques.

If you want, take a look at how much PM is worth in VP points to IJN. That should help you decide. But when in doubt - attack!

Troops load faster at large ports and with smaller transport. Shouldn't be more than 1-2 days in anycase. Units with vehicles can take longer.

You mean sitting on ships? No, if anything troops do better sitting on ships than they do sitting on some malaria infested base. Fuel troops don't need, so you can forget about that. General rule of thumb is that more supplies = better troops, less supplies = worse troops.

The goal of scen 1 to to end with more points than the Allied, as ever. A victory in the CV battle is the easiest way to do this, but also the more hazardous as the Coral Sea battle may be won by both sides (even if IJN wins most of the time).

I played it once and didn't remember now if the Japanese has enough troops to take PM by an amphibious operation (INF Rgt for assault and ENG units with assault value to destroy Allied forts) and enough transports to bring them and supplies to PM.

To land in PM with some chance of success, I will load:
the big Naval Garnison, the AA unit and supplies in a big convoy with all tranports available in Truk
_ the 144th Rgt, the big Naval garnison, the SNLF and the 3 ENG units with assault value in Rabaul.

Use FT TF of one DD bringing part of the small Naval Garnison to take Buna, Gili Gili, Lunga and Tulagi. Will give you some easy points.

Before the Truk convoy arrives, let the Rabaul convoy wait around Rabaul and patrol with CV N of Rossel Island. If the USN CV engage, they will probably lose. Damaged US CV will be too far from base to be saved while yours will have a chance to reach base.

When you land in PM, send a small FT bring troops to Lea Lea to cut any retreat road to the Allied garnison.

Or you can change the rules and invade Luganville and Efate instead of PM.

Scen 1 is for me a 'CV battle' scenario, too short to really mount and succeed in an amphibious major operation.
