How should I go about purchasing my army in the beginning of the battle editor? Which units are absolutely mandatory and which are redundant?

Also, I'm having a problem deciding the size of the formations I purchase, esp. infantry formations. Is it best to buy one huge company of infantry or should I go for several independent platoons with the same total strength? Which is better and why?

And oh, can you recommend the best ratio of armor to infantry in my army? If you could express it as a percentage that would be most helpful.

The management of all that gives me quite a headache.

MonsterZero, I would recommend that you search the SPWaW Training Center for the frequent discussions on Long Campaign core force compositions.

Generally speaking, the ratio of foot infantry to tanks should be roughly 3 to 1. However, if your infantry is motorized or mechanized, then the ratio is more like 2 to 1.

I think everyone has there own way of setting up...such as everyone has their own way of doing a job. I think you will have to do a trial and error type system, over different conditions...to employ your personal tactics.
Mine are totally 180 from my friends tactics style...both work well,....but when trying to employ "others" tactics style...have not worked well. You can always pick up bits and pieces from different games against other players...some work...some don't...
But I do agree...start with the tuditorials.....
Have fun...
take care,
Huffy

I personally go with U.S.Army doctrine and go with "combined arms"..
I select my infantry units 1st(because they spot concealed units sooner and cost less when taking "movement losses")..I follow this purchase with armor, and then with Motorized grunts(to exploit possible openings or use as reinforcements/reserves..
All is follwed in purchases with artillery,(very needed for enemy infantry supression).

I would wait for the update to begin a campaign but best rule is combined arms. A good mix:

One Company of Infantry, One Platoon of Engineers, Tanks (depending of how large battles you want to fight -a platoon up to Company of tanks), Tank destroyers(one platoon), One FO (Arillery Observer), A platoon of good Mortars, One Ammo Truck, Anti-Aircraft units, and do not forget at least a section or platoon of towed AT GUNs make a good mix.

Again, the number of units you pick, the AI will match
