Couple of questions about the USS Long Island

1) Can flight operations other than Transfer be conducted from the Long Island; that is to say strike or CAP flight ops?

2) If you transfer a squadron to the Long Island which is too big to fit on it which piece, the one embarked or the part left behind is the actual squadron (the part that would get replacements)?

1) If the a/c total in the sqdrn is 16 then it'll conduct ops but if more it won't. So you'll only be stuck with putting SBD or TBF units aboard. You can still put any sized unit on it to transfer it but no ops will occur.
2) The unit on the LI should be the main unit with the subunit still at whatever base it's transferred from if any aren't ready. I've normally just waited till all a/c in the unit are ready then transferred them. As long as all the a/c are ready none will be left behind regardless of size.

I've never tried it so I'm not sure if it'll work or not, whether you can put multiple units aboard it to transfer them or not but would be something to see. I think most people just don't bother to use the LI sending it back to PH instead. I've always used it with a SBD or TBF unit aboard along with other CVE ships as my CV units in Aust/NG area.

I always thought it was a decoy. seems thats all its good for , send it in ahead of your others then the ijn attacks and gives away there position! Wish it worked that way but all that seemed to happen was it got sunk! What would the need for ferrying planes when transfer base works better and faster?

Some of the shorter range fighters can't transfer from Brisbane to Noumea; making this type of transfer the only way to reinforce a flank if necessary. Additionally, consider the Noumea - Lunga run. If you do the base transfer way, it might take 2-3 transfers and additional days of rest for recovery from fatigue and you still will have op losses. A CVE can load a group, sail 2-3 days, be in a short range to Lunga, transfer the planes and the fatigue should be low enough that you can switch them to CAP/Nstrike right away if you like. And, probably not lose a plane in the transfer. And then you can take a battle fatigued group back. Japanese can use the same regarding Truk - Kavieng/Rabaul. While most of their planes can make it, you usually lose 1-2 in the transfer. A spare CVL/CVE can save you those points and more so the pilots. Just for some fuel cost and repairable SYS damage to a low combat value ship (Unyo, especially)

Long Island is too slow to participate in major fleet actions, and the idea of using her as a decoy is abhorrant to me (she's still worth quite a few points). I've tried using her as an ASW escort for convoys, but usually when she arrives (around June), I don't have any squadrons with sufficient experience to actually do any good (you really need a sqaudron with 70 exp to effectively hunt subs). None of the squardons in June or July have that kind of exp (unless you pull one off of you active CVs, and why would you do that), so using her as an ASW platform that early (with a green squadron) just makes her a tempting target.

All that being said, I always put a lot of miles on Long Island.

She is constantly ferrying fighters between Brisbane and Noumea. The P39s, P40s, and Wilcats can't make the trip. I prefer to move P39s out of New Guinea as soon as they can be replaced with P40s. The P39s then get stationed in the Solomons where the range to target is normally shorter, and to fly CAP over the more reward bases like Luganville to keep away any long-legged Betty strikes. Of course, the right squadron for the job never arrives at the right base, so Long Island earns her hazard pay. Just put her with a pair of DDs with good ASW defense, and she's in business.

By late '42, you should be in better control of the skys, and thus moving fighters around isn't as imperative. By -then- you will likely have a spare squardon of SBDs with ample exp to act as ASW squardon or put a small CAP squadron, and she can be used to escort your supply convoys.

As said above, in the good post by Feinder, the USS Long Island is the only means of getting the P-39`s to Noumea, and then to Lunga Base if you have taken it by late July `42 , they are really useful in stopping the Japanese Barges trying to re-supply the Japanese troops( who will show up quickly ) when set on Naval Attack and 100 feet.

i stand corrected! I now see she has a use. Now if i could just get her off the bottom i could put her to use! I didnt use her as a decoy i just found fighters didnt fly off her and she ended up on the bottom but close enough to lae to save her air group! Well if i ever get another one i know what to do! Man some of you are pretty deep in knowledge , much more than me on some of this stuff!!

Put Long Island in TF with couple og DD's and possible CLAA, if available. Load two Marine divebomber sqdrns to it. Then place your real carrier TF's to follow it to carrier battle. After first day exchange of strikes, IJN has either 'wasted' his Val's and Kate's to this decoy instead of your 'real' Flattops or you can replentish your strikeforce in night between the battles, giving you fair change to knock few CV's out next day.
