It is.

And a well deserved victory at that. They beat Portugal twice, and France, and the Czechs, and...

Some say boring 70's style of defensive soccer, but why blame them for the opposing teams' inability to adapt to their play. It's not like they didn't have time to study. Congrats Greece!

Next thing to look forward to: the olympics. and the 2006 WC soccer qualifications..

boring 70's style of defensive soccer,

Well the greek do not just pile 11 man in front of the goal like some other "underdgos" do. They defend in depth. Which is great since they don´tplay destructive football. Then they also seek their chances in attacking.

And who sayed that succesfull soccer must be "modern". Well, maybe this is modern now , since all those fancy multi million Euro modern teams failed big time.

Well done Greece! I´m happy for you guys, party on!

But now it´s time to give us Otto back, hehehehe

Hi!

They played well as a "team."

And got the result they deserved.

Here's to Greece...

I am sorry, but this just shows how bad European soccer really is.

Take the latins (specially the Brazilians) out of the Spanish, italian and English teams and get ready for the worse soccer match ever.

I really don´t see the point in playing defensive soccer, its just so bad to watch.

By the way, I was watching some greeks crying out loud when their team was arriving in Greece with the trophy : "We conquered Europe !! We are the best !! Bring Brazil to us !!"

My God ... aren´t dreams nice ?

Take Ronaldo away from the Brazilian team and they´re no cent better then any European team.

I would like to see how Brazil plays against Greece. They had quite a few problems against the (bad) germans in the finals, remember ?

What? I would take Ronaldinho in my team over Ronaldo anytime

The best ntl teams in my opinions and right now are Brazil, France. But the victory of Greece in Euro2004 is heralding what will be the WC 2006. It won't be won by a european team nor by Brazil.

I know someone who predicted this result and won £200. He is also pretty good at predicting personal life and has things to say about the economy which are also coming about.

As for who will win WC2006, I will let you in on it nearer the time.

Didn't Greece's German coach 'know' the referee? 'Not wishing to imply bias. The Greeks played the game as cleanly as the English. Whereas you'd have to admit there were some very questionable decisions made against the English when they played Portugal (who in fact LOST) including a disallowed goal.

Did anyone else notice that the penalty spot was clearly 'farmed' to disadvantage Beckham - the sodding ball was sinking into the ground - absolute farce!

England 2006!

That´s nothing, you heard about that british that did win 458.000 Euro, by betting on Greece before the championships started. It made the news here.

Yes, they´re both germans. And of course they "know" each others from various encounters in the german Bundesliga . Merk actually banned Rehagel quite a few times. They´re not friends or so. They work in the same business, as so many that work in football . I think they have some local roots. IIRC both or from the Kaiserslautern area. Schwaben.

I´m really fedup with all this "referee" excuse BS. To win a game you have to first score, all teams that really bitched publicaly about the referees had more then enough chances to win their games. I find i pretty pathetic to blame the referes (they´re allways bad, everybody kows that) or NIKE's football shoes (Totti) or to tight socks (Totti) if you fail to win your game.

If I have ever seen an insult, this is one!

Kaiserslauterner are Pfälzer!

They have nothing in common with Schwaben!

Stuttgarter are Schwaben!

hello everybody,

let me tell you my comments ,since i am Greek.
It is obvious of course that everyone in Greece went crazy with what happened.
We are very proud of our team but we still realize our limitations.
Noone thinks that suddenly we became one of the superpowers in football.

Someone mentioned that Greeks were crying "bring Brazil to us!".
It is true that we were singing a song saying something like that.
It is misleading if someone thinks that we actually beleive that we can battle on equal terms with any superpower in football since we are now the European champions.
Fans just improvised and sang funny things .That is all.
We know that we will still be the underdogs in any game against Brazil or France or Spain or Portugal.

Regarding the playing style we adopted during Euro2004 and if this is good or bad for football ,i have to say the following.
I do not beleive that this "defensive" style is going to change football.
This type of style maximizes the chances for an underdog to beat a stronger opponent.
I beleive that if two equal teams compete against each other , they do not have to win anything by letting their opponent the advantage of having more possesion of the ball.
This defensive style did not help Greece in creating more attacking opportunities than the other opponents.
In fact ,it was the other teams that had more chances for achieving a goal since our attacking players weer not risking often to leave the defence and go forward .
Greece rightfully won ,cause it had the ability (and lack) to take advantage of the much fewer opportunities it had.It was a matter of effectiveness.

So, what would be the advantage for any strong team to adopt a style that minimizes the number of opportunities for scoring?
In spite of the above , i feel that this Greek team deserves the respect of everybody.

There are three elements that are essential for football and any other sport.
One is the technical ability and inspiration-creativity , the second is the fighting spirit and the third is the team bond and cooperation.

Brazilians might be masters regarding the first element which is relative also to the entertaiment of the neutral spectator of the match.Still we have to remember that although Brazil had a team with fantastic players like Socrates -Falcao and so on, they were not able to win the world cup.
Personally i beleive that Brazilian team (1982 and 1986) was the most entertaining to watch (i am not old enough to have any experience before 1982).

Still, the truth is that Brazil returned to victories, only after they adopted a more "european-pragmatic approach" in their style.
This did not destroy the beauty of their play although it undermined it,but it was still exciting to see an effective Brazilian team.

Similarily, i have equally enjoyed and admired epic battles of the German football team to reverse a match and win a game that seemed to be lost. They showed perfect examples of the other two elements which are not related directly to entertainment.

On the other hand ,sports is not just to entertain people.
It is also to inspire and educate them.
When someone shows me that nothing is impossible as long as you give 100% of what you have and pursue systematically whatever small chances you have, i equally admire him.
In this Eurocap, it was the Greek team i admired and that is why i feel proud of them.

As a last comment , i have to say that it is good for football to have shocking surprises once every 10 or 20 years.
This makes things much more interesting - unlike basketball where the nature of the game does not help the undedogs to beat favorites.
The Greek win in Euro2004 should not concern anybody regarding the nature of modern football.
It will be a real problem ,only if we see in the near future that the underdog Greece has become suddenly one of the superpowers of world football by playing this "defensive" football.

Congrats to Greece! You guys did deserve the championships, I´m very happy for your team and can imagine that the whole of Greece simply went nuts on sunday. Man, all the greeks here in Bonn went completly nuts . Reminded me of how I went nuts when we made last world chmapionships final round, the european champioships in 1996 or even more when we won the world championships in 1990

Now give us Otto back

congratulations to greece....

they were the best in 04 and deseved the championship. Rehagel did a great job, but without the will and the fighting spirit of his players he had been just another Rudi Völler.

No, everybody who try to downsize this huge and historical succsess of greek soccer is just narrowminded.

After "my" german team came home early (jep they deserved their fate, better know as in 2006) i was a supporter of the greeks, and i feared for them like i had for the germans. The bs about the referee and rehagel, well - they disliked and everybody should tell me, why did the portugies did not made some goals ? But also thank you to portugal, great show, great team, they deserved to be nr.2 because after beeing nearly out of the tournament, they fought back.

So, to greece and a happy olympia 2004 (if they will be finish it and it has not to be delayed until 2005

Woo Hoo!

That's all I can say. My dad is Greek so he followed this thing and gave me daily updates. Reminds me of when they won the Euro basketball championship.

Congrats all around!

Lets hope their hosting of the Olympics is as successful as their soccer was!

I've heard by the way that while they are struggling to finish some of the facilities, those that have been completed are spectacular!

Hahahahahaha That was a funny one !!!!!!!!!! Hahahahaha.....
Take Ronaldinho out of the Brazilian team and it won´t make too much of a difference really. Brazil is such a granary of footbal players that it is just a matter of adjusting the team. In my opinion, Brazil can place at least 3 teams playing in the world cup and would still have more chance to win than any other team.
What the rest of the world have, is that from time to time, one have a good or an awsome team, but rarely, Brazil almost allways has a fantastic team, if not fantastic, it will still be very competitive.
Example : France now has a good team, but the last good team that they had were the 82 - 86 teams, whith Michel Platini.
Example 2 : Germany had a good team in 74, then a power team in 90, after that, it is just going down and down. To say that we had problems in beating Germany in the last world cup is just sad.
Example 3 : Holand, 74 - 78 that was all, they had also a nice team during the nineties, but who cares about holand anyways ? Only europeans....
Example 4 : BRAZIL, we are having good teams since 1950, all of them should have won world cups, but as I said, from time to time, appears a good team to make a even match against us, but the only bad team that Brazil ever presented in a world cup was in 1990. The diference is this, its pretty unusual for Brazil to have a bad quality team, but it is a rarety for any other European team to present a good team in two world cups in a row.

Its the truth guys, I am sorry, but it is the truth. It hurts, I know....

But congrats to Greece, it was a major feat !!!!

Ahhhhh

Having 5 world cups when only two other poor fellows have only 3, some has two and sad England and France have only 1 each must be truly enerving as well.

The prospect of having to win two world cups to still equal Brazil must be very very depressing.

I am capable of beting that we will also win in Germany in 2006.

By the way, all our world cups were won away from home, we don´t really need to be playing at home.

I agree. It seems like everytime I watch Brazil play in the world cup they have 2-3 players on the sidelines that would be the stars on almost any other team in the tournament. But they can't get any playing time with Brazil because all the guys on the field are even better than they are!

Its insane how much soccer talent that country produces. That's why they are the most entertaining team to watch, year in and year out. They just play on a different level than everyone else.

Its like the US and basketball (back when we actually sent our best players, not the 3rd tier teams we send now) or the old Soviet Union and hockey.

I wouldn´t go that far, they don´t win all the time. It´s not that Brazil allways rules the World Championships are the South American Cup

They have great stars, great individual players. but they also often suffer from the same problem like for example the Italians. No real team spirit and too many individual players that produce a good ammount of rivalry among the team.

When they play good they´re pleasure to watch, that´s true.
