They have that old boardgame look and feel. They're simple, fun, and best of all - THEY'RE FREE! (kinda) Though not as good as RGW, Battle for Moscow is pretty good.

Note, none of these games has an AI.

The Aussies will probably appreciate the Malay game.

Interesting. Though I notice they are strictly human v human boardgames, there is no computer opponent.

Quite interested in the Battle of Britain one once its available.

Thank you for opening this topic. I know another free war strategy games I would like to tell about.

MegaMek is computer game based to Classic BattleTech tabletop board game and follows its rules by letter. Game is coded with Java and should work in all Java compatible computers (unsure about PDAs). MegaMekNET is on-line version where players join to factions to fight against other factions. Most popular server of the MegaMekNET is based to year 3025 with level 1 technology. Good place to start is

For those who think "What the Hell is BattleTech?", brief description. BattleTech was first published in year 1984 as tabletop board game. It is tactical level war game. At first only combat units were walking war machines of mass destruction, commonly known as BattleMech or 'Mech for short. Other military branches were added later including infantry, vehicles and aircrafts. From tabletop game is made other game variations including several computer games where most known is MechWarrior. Other BattleTech products include technical readouts of numerous combat units, novels, TV-serie and more.

Notes from lance commander's war diary

In very short time medium lance of the 4th Skye Rangers has been in 3 military operations and won them all with no casualties. Special thing in this lance is it consist of Hunchback BattleMechs with various weapon configurations. Lance commander calls lance as "Hunchbacks".

Heavy metal clashed on planet Oliver of the Free Worlds League. Opposing FWL force concentrated firepower against HBK-4N which fell becouse massive amounts of damage. It took three attempts from MechWarrior to get it stand once more. Again enemy concentrated fire to it and didn't pay much attention to advancing HBK-4H or HBK-4G which had back towards all enemies except Javelin in front of it. HBK-4N took another volley of damage which would had been enough to destroy it, but was still standing! Enemy JVN-10M tried strike HBK-4J from behind which was laying Long-Range Missile fire from woods. Javelin took hit to leg from Autocannon/20 fired by HBK-4G. Concentrated fire from three other Hunchbacks against PXH-1K made heavy damage to its armor and gyroscope which ultimately forced enemy to surrender to victorious "Hunchbacks".

Know this is not the place for RTS promotions, but the original Ground Control will be released as freeware shortly.

For a sci-fi RTS, I found it entertaining and also quite good. You do have higher ground advantage, scouting is VERY important and you have to coordinate infantry, tanks and artillery in your attacks. The units also fight good on their own, but it's an RTS and with that comes the inevitable clickfest.

Good graphics too, considering it's a bit dated now. Zoom all in and you'll see casings flying from individual marines' weapons. Cool.

Be aware, I downloaded the 4 Kamikaze games, and they had a trojan virus in the first two, I didn't bother worrying if the second two were clean.

So go there aware.

CCB,
As you (kinda) said, these are not free wargames. Battle for Moscow is a free download of a "light" version of the game. The other game downloads are just demos. But none-the-less, an interesting site for those who like their computer games to play like a board game and I'm absolutetly in that catagory, so thanks for the link.

Ground Control is a dern good game for freeware. Actually its a good game at full retail. I bought it when it came out and I liked it.

I'm a tad angry b/c I wanted a copy of Soldiers at War and I was certain I could get it freeware but darnit underdog just directs me to a place to buy it. Its sickening when I have to pay for a game w/ the guys who made it are belly up. I got no prob at all paying the paycheck for developers but blah.. I won't go on and on. If anyone knows a way to get Soldiers at War much appreciated.

Long live SSI When they belly up part of me died I got the silent storm demo, honesly 15 yr old Soldiers at War is better. imo.

Soldiers at war is a great game. I too discovered that it wasn`t abondonware. After keeping an eye on ebay for about 3 months I managed to find a copy. For the grand sum of £1.99 !!! Worth tying to track down.

Squad Leader was just an upgraded Soldiers at War. People can complain it wasn't literally squad leader, but I thought it beat the pants off Soldiers at War.
