A question for any of the beta testers/designers? I am currently playing the Rising Sun scenario as Japan vs AI and for first six weeks I left my subs on Auto so I could learn the rest of game and see how the computer handled the subs. I discovered that all the subs were homeported as far away as possible from their current operational patrols and that the computer had not assigned ONE sub to the homeport where its two AS were stationed, Saigon. I have since taken over and will handle subs myself but I question what the computer is doing? What are purpose of AS's if it is not going to use them? Is it just a quirk of the smaller scenarios?

Perhaps the AI cannot use the AS ships. Subs generally have a home port where they can reload their torps even if it is a million miles away..

It can use the AS, in the full scenario you'll find a bunch operating out of Soerabaja.

One thing I find odd is it has issues sending out the subs after a patrol at times.

I have a cluster at PH and a cluster at Soerabaja (well until I told them all to rack off in case the base was taken), but nothing at Manila (the subs enter, refuel, and leave a couple of turns later).

Perhaps the AI doesn't know where to send them?

Also if you remove the AS from Soerabaja (like, by accident :D) the AI still tries to use it as a port :/

Some work needed on it I think.

My theory on this issue is that the sub has been assigned a destination that is too far away for its endurance - it doesn't have the "legs" - so it sits still.....

We put a lot of work into making sure the AI stationed subs at forward bases and did not send them out of fuel range, but I'm not sure using ASs was looked at.

Thanks for the replies. As far as I can tell, in the Rising Sun scenario, Japan has no level 8 or 9 ports at start. So only way to load torps on subs is via AS, correct? I was just curious why with 2 AS's sitting in Singapore, after 6 weeks of auto operations no subs were based out of only port capable of supporting them properly? And most of them were based out of Formosa area and sending the subs into the Indian Ocean. Just an observation.
