Is rubbish.

How anyone can can to grips with a game like this with a tutorial like that is ridiculous.

The KP and HTTR tutorials were excellent what a great job done there to ease someone into the game......but this for a game so complkicated takes the biscuit.

I havent the time to give this game just to try and suss it out.

Sorry but Im glad it cost me 11.98 and no I will not buy WiTP as I have no idea whether I will like it.

Oh well.

hiyas,

The tutorial can help, I know it stops after the first two days in the manual but that doesn't mean that you have to. Carry on with it and use it with reference to stuff in the main manual. Then maybe try some of the smaller scenarios like Coral Sea etc.

Also check out the FAQ's on this thread and also over on Spooky's site they do help a lot.

Stick with it and you will enjoy the game

Its just a time issue really. If I was single it would be no problem.

I agree with wodin. A game as complicated as this needs to give a much better introduction into the gameplay. I bought this game something like a year ago, and I simply cannot get going with it.

I have no idea where to start, what the goal is, how to acheive the goal should I accidentally find out what the goal is.

It was way too overwhelming for me. I printed the manual, tutorial and a FAQ that was kicking about, and still no joy. I REALLY wanted to enjoy it...I just could not work out where to start or what I was, ultimately, trying to acheive (ok...I get the "...defeat the japanese..." bit...but that's it....no direction on how to go about that!

I was looking over at WITP and, although it looks a much deeper game (due to the size and scale) it just daunts me even more and, as much as I would like to give this game a go and, ultimately, WITP, I just couldn't.

I think a decent manual and tutorial for games as deep as these are an absolute must have!

The "tutorial" really is a joke. It's not that it stops after two days - it's that there aren't enough details and explanations to warrant the paper it's printed on. But for your information, the tutorial that came with WitP is quite good. It takes its time, explains clear actions (how-to's) and the reasoning behind each step, and has separate sections geared toward whether you're a beginner, intermediate, or experienced player.

I can sympathise with those who give up in frustration. The manual explains the game mechanics, but some strategy chapters would not go astray, some info on the merits of the different altitude settings, cap levels to set, how to go about rotating squadrons, recovering damaged ships etc. A lot of this info can be gleaned if you have the time to go through the forum here, and ask any of the helpfull players, but some sort of strategy guide a la HTTR is badly needed for this game. I am on my second attempt to get into the game, having shelved it a while ago, and having a much more enjoyable time second time around. There is enough here to keep me going without having to go anywhere near WITP for some time to come, though here's hoping they will reimport into UV the improvements made in WITP. The game is well worth the investment of time spent into finding out how to play it halfway proper, just a pity the manual couldn't have made the job just a little easier.

Regards

The tutorial in WitP is better but thats maybe because I sort of know what I'm doing.

I learnt in the deep end - decided to take on a PBEM game and you have to learn - good thing is if you are short of time you can decide to do just a little for that turn.

I am constantly reorganising in my game and will probably lose hopelessly but it has made me learn the game and of that I am immensely glad.

My advice - stick with it and get a human opponent - also with PBEM you can plan whilst waiting for opposition move whereas vs the computer it is too tempting to rush things along

Trouble is, plan for what with what? That's what I do not get. I've no idea of the best/recommended/worst composition for a task force...I have no idea how/why/where to move troops/ships/infantry...I have no idea what to do...that's the problem...and if you have no idea what to do, how can you plan...which just means when I played the game, I was along for the ride.

The game isn't at fault. As a game, it's very in depth and strategic. BUT it is very, very anti-beginner. I am not an "avid" wargamer. I mean, I am very interested in war and strategy, but I don't play "strategic" wargames that often. So this game, let alone War in the Pacific, is just toooooo daunting.

A good tutorial or strategic guide would not only have helped me play this game...but it would have helped me enjoy it AND helped me decide whether to buy WitP as well....as it is, I have a game on the shelf I dare not pick up and a game that I would love to buy (simply for the strategic enormity of it), but simply would never fathom out.

Okay, I am no experienced player but maybe a couple of other ideas to wet your appetite.

Go to Spooky's website - many links in the forum - where there are loads of tactics articles and FAQs.

Why not run a computer vs computer game and watch for a while - see what they are doing.

Forget the manual. I learned 90% of all I know about this game from this forum. Everything seems to be covered, just a matter of finding it. The other 10% came from actually playing it and making mistakes. As to your objectives- simple, drive the enemy from the pacific. Sinking/crippling their carriers is always a good way to start. Cutting of their supplies by sinking as many ships as possible is another. Though now that I think of it, would be nice if this game had smaller campaigns with specific objectives as well as the "win the whole war" thing.
