I am playing US 42A against A/I. On August 28, 5th AF HQ is located primarily in Townsville, with a small component still in Brisbane, which is being transferred to Townsville by c-47. It is properly listed in the Unit Listing in both locations. On August 29, 5th AF is no where to be found and is no longer listed in the Unit List. What is going on?

See if it reappears the next day back in Brisbane. It used to happen routinely back in UV to have a unit in transit to disappear and then reappear a few days later back in its orginal base.

I have also had units dispear while perfoming air transport. I transported the 2nd MAW from Noumea to Ludanville and after it combined the unit disappeared from all bases. I played several more turns to see if the unit would show up and it did not.

Since the unit was an intergral part of my plans for the Guadacanal scenario, this game is essentially unplayable. I will not be playing anymore until a patch is released that fixes this problem. I cannot tell you how disappointed I was to waste several hours of playing.

I wonder if this problem is only related to air transport of HQ unit, in which case it could (inconveniently) be gotten around temporarily.

Yes ... if you stop transporting them 1 day less then the full group, you'll be fine.

Good to know. I never liked the air transport option in UV, groups kept splitting up too much, and it was a pain in the a$$ to get them together again.

Nice try, but I just had the cream of two regiments FT to Ulithi and capture the base with a shockk attack, only to completely disappear after the FT TF had left. The question is whether the surviving Japanese will realize this and retake the base before the remaining third of each regiment (which are on slower APs following the FT group) arrive to consolidate the defense. And then, will this latter group be able to hold out long enough to be reinforced by the remaining regiment 0f the 77th Division which is on its way from Entiwok(sp?). Stay tuned.

I know the AI is supposed to cheat on the 'hard' setting, but isn't this a little too much?

Good luck. I hope your other troops do not also disappear. Tough to keep a base without any friendlies.

So, Frag, are you suggesting not to airtransport any units at all? No airborne assaults?

Could you clarify what the problem is and what actions will result in a unit disappearing so that it does not happen to me, please?

NO, if this a repeat of the UV problem it also happens with sea evacuation. I had one game where I has a Rgt in Irau walking all the way to the other side of the island and then being picked up by the IJN DD at the rate of 1000 soldiers each trip.

At one time, there remained only 300 soldiers there while 5000+ were in Rabaul. I decided to send a small TF pick them, as my opponent has done little to stop me (losing some PT while trying) and they picked up all men. When the TF arrived in Rabaul and unloads, the whole regiment was vaporized. At least my opponents didn't have the points for killing it, I did it myself.

The problem appears sometimes when an unit divived in two is reunited. For example, you transport 90% of an unit somewhere with C-47 one turn and the last 10% next turn and BOOM.

Oh no, my "favorite" UV bug reappears...

I wrote about this at great length back at the UV boards.

This bug happens when LAST transport vehicle (be it ship, or - more oftenly - Dakota C47) dies in transit. Dakotas die quite often on operational losses alone. If the LAST Dakota, carrying LAST part of the unit, happens to be the one that is lost (either in combat vs. Zeros or as "operational loss" in bad weather etc.) your whole unit is LOST.

Same for ship carrying last part of the unit.

Incidentally, that fatal last part of the unit most oftenly (if not always) carries the name of the whole unit.

So, say you're transporting 5th AF HQ (as you did). It has, for example, 60 support squads. Your Dakotas transport 58 squads on the first day, BUT on the destination you'd have "only" something like "2/5th AF HQ", while 2 squads that remained on the starting point will have designation "5th AF HQ".

On the second day you continue the transport, but the LAST Dakota, carrying last support squad (or two) CRASHES as operational loss - bang, whole unit disappears.

I still dont have WITP, but I've seen this many times in UV and am sure this is the old "disappearing bug" from UV (the one I hated a LOT).

Oleg

I lost more than a few units to this bug in UV. I hope a fix can be found in WITP. It really took the fun out of air transport.

Its turned out even stranger than I thought it might. On the next turn the Japanese who had retreated, also disappeared. Eventually the remainder of the two partial Allied regiments that had disappeared finally arrived at Ulithi. However they refused to unload and so I was really stuck (as well as losing two Rgts I had 4 APs unable to load or unload anything - it was like having 4 ships sunk). I was finally able to unload the troops by creating new TFs for each remnant Rgt. I guess they knew what fate awaited them however, because they unloaded into nothingness - ie. they also disppeared.

The really strange part is that the base now shows an assault strength of 357 when there are only about 170 points present. The remaing 190-odd points must be from the "disappeared" units (they started out at 127 points each but had been in combat) so maybe they are just being "stealthy" and hiding. In any event. I'm unlikely to ever find out because the Japanese don't look like they'll be counter-attacking anytime soon.

I was really hoping this bug would not follow over from UV, but it looks like it did. I would routinely lose units (just disappear) and then a few days later they would reappear. Somewhere else on the map. One good thing, they would usually appear on a friendly base. In your game, The IJA look like they are not fairing much better.
