I installed the game. Ran the tutorial up to the crash a couple times. Tried the Coral Sea scenario, crash after order phase. Came online, found 1.20 patch. Patched, even renamed wp.prfs to wp_old.prfs. Well, now the game seems to work, except...

The computer automatically runs the first turn for every scenario (and, yes, I have the game set to only one side computer-controlled). I only get control after the first turn is already completed. I could run the campaign game that way, but for a small scenario like Coral Sea, that means I am essentially shut out of affecting the game.

Is this a known issue? Is there a fix for it, short of uninstall, re-install? Would uninstall, re-install even fix the issue?

First, glad to hear things are working. Please also apply the 1.21 patch now that you're at 1.20.

All you need to do to get around your problem is turn off "historical first turn" and you should be given control. Let me know if that works.

Regards,

- Erik

Except...when I switch the setting to not use historical first turn, I crash at the same point (just at the start of the day phase on day 2) every single time, just like I did with the unpatched version of the game. So you still have a bug in here.

Will try the 1.21 patch, but nothing suggest that a crash like this is fixed in 1.21.

But why do I need to enter my reg number for every patch? That's just crazy.

The 1.21 patch has absolutely no effect. The game still consistently crashes to desktop with no error message when historical first turn is off.

dkurtz,

Any joy with the suggested "NOSOUND" fix?

I ask, because I have exactly the same problem as you do with the Coral Sea scenario.

Beginning to get hacked off with this game, which seems a trifle buggy on many systems judging by the forum. Three patches in just a few weeks, and still CTDs.

Moreover I still haven't received my CD after over 2 weeks!

There's a number of threads out there showing what to do regarding not getting your disk. Just fire off an email and they'll square you away. As far as the bug squishing thats going on, the patches thus far have eliminated a bunch of problems that folks were having to the point where it seems CTD's are a minority.

My suggestion, because no one wants them or wants you to deal with them is make a thread with your precise problems and scenarios where you have the CTD's. Ensure that everything is updated. Drivers, DirectX, the works... There's no such thing as a "TMI" foul in bug reporting. The more information you provide to the testers, the more likely it'll get fixed and you can have many an hour of happy grogg'ing with WiTP. I can tell you I'm ecstatic over this game and I'm sure once you're all sorted out, you will be also.

regards...

2Stepper,

Thx for your comments, and I do appreciate that a lot of work has been done on patching this excellent game following launch.

I have just re-built my system and upgraded sound & video drivers, DirectX, etc., so now I'll re-load WITP and re-apply the 3 patches thus far (1.10c, 1.20 & 1.21). I hope that'll work.

If not I'll post with DxDiag and precise description of problems. Fundamentally it's the same problem as dkurtz at the same place in the same scenario; I also experienced the CTD during the tutorial at the same point as most others.

You'll have to excuse my frustration - WITP is just what I was looking for: strategy-level game that really requires thought and attention to detail. I generally play IL2 FB, the Combat Mission series, and H&D2, so this is a bit of a departure; more in line with the board games I played as a child (remember Avalon Hill?). All these games play well out of the box, however, and I've rarely experienced a launched game that has causes such catastrophic failures as CTDs, particularly during the tutorial, which is strongly scripted and mapped. WITP is also relatively expensive.

Still, I'll get there, and I'm sure I'll be hooked, much to the chagrin of my wife, lol!

Just a little humor here folks.

Bah, skip the tutorial and jump right into the deep end by challenging a Beta tester to a PBEM.
Quick way to learn the game by observing the actions of others.

I wish I could help you though. I have experience with UV and many other of GG's games, so I just went straight to the big one.

At least you don't have to punch out the counters with this game. I remember Pacific War had a couple of thousand of them.

But yes, it is a hard game to get into. Mistakes made can become apparant only after a lot of turns. Perseverance pays off though. I'm having a lot of fun.
