Subject: Carrier Action in the Coral Sea

Have engaged vastly superior carrier force in the Northern Coral sea approximately 200 miles due south of the Louisades.

Dive and torpedo bombers from USS Saratoga and USS Lexington executed a brilliantly coordinated attack and have inflicted severe damage on Japanese carriers Soryu (3-1000lb bomb hits), Hiryu (4 1000lb. bomb hits with large secondary explosions) Kaga (4-1000lb bomb hits and 1-21in torpedo hit) Shoho (3-1000lb bomb hits). Japanese carrier Akagi escaped undamaged.

Japanese response with 4 waves of attacks upon TF 1041, BB New Mexico recieved 3 torpedo hits but is making steam suficiently to stay with main body of the task force, carrier Yorktown took 3 bombs and suffered a fuel explosion below deck. She is currently 200 miles from Nomea making 9 knots escorted by DD Parrott.

CV Saratoga undamaged.

Heavy losses in a/c and crews

Japanese force retired toward Rabaul.

Considering the odds, Chet, I'd say we smacked 'em pretty good. Although I can say that we might wan't to light some kind of ship-recognition fire under those RAF PBY jockeys flying out of Townsville. My intial intel from these boys stated 1 CV and 1 CVL.

At any rate, in my opinion, Shoestring's timetable should be advanced should logistics be available.

Status: offline 		Lucked out as far as I'm concerned.

Three weeks ago I installed the game, started the long campaign with the "house rule" that I'd live with the PH result, react as the Allies would have (i.e. let the Japanese roll -- no evacs, fight where possible.) Bataan fell just 2 days prior to this carrier vs. carrier (s) action.

I've had no restarts or "peeks" at the "enemy". Not even a "do-over" save.

So far it's been great!

This was the first time that I actually tried to check the Japanese advance with really valuble assets. I did a day or two of rotating carrier raids on Kwajelein in Feb. (Hornet caught a fish though. Still in the yards, but should be ready for action in a month or so.) Guadalcanal an Tulagi have been taken, that's where I decided to draw the line.

At the very least these KB reps will be out of action for a bit! Now if I can just get Yorktown home!

Forward congradulations and BZ to all personnel in theatre and especially to those brave souls comprising TF1041. They have indeed achieved a great victory and have contributed mightily to the glorious history of the United States Navy. Thier brave actions and selfless sacrifice have indeed struck a deep blow into the vitals of the enemy. Awards will be forthcoming as AAR's are sent up the chain and as they merit.

CV Enterprise will be dispatched to SOPAC with all haste.

San Francisco, Ca.----Coming on the heels of the defeat of brave American and Filipino forces at the bastion of Bataan for which a grateful nation mourns, US naval sources which request anonymity have told of a great naval victory somewhere in the Pacific. One source can be quoted as saying, "Pearl Harbor and Bataan have been avenged". The source refused to go into further detail, and official Navy spokesmen have refused comment....

TF1041 has reached Nomea safely.

Have dispatched 3 destroyer TF to rendezvous with Yorktown due to reported enemy submarine presence. Have intensified ASW patrols by all capable aircraft.

Yorktown damage extensive --- massive flooding, fires out. Speed last reported 7 knots.

Have ordered Capt. Buckmaster to make for Komac anchorage and dispatched repair ship Vestal and supply ship ffrom Nomea to rendezvous with Yorktown TF there and affect repairs if possible. If flooding damage can be satisfactorily stopped, Yorktown's orders are to proceed to Nomea at earliest opportunity.

Enemy code intercept reads...........CV Hiryu scuttled in deep water off Rabaul in order not to foul harbor. Damage to ship too extensive for repair at facilities present at Rabaul......

Enemy battleship Haruna believed sunk by RAAF Beauforts flying from Port Moresby. One pilot reported torpedo strike starboard side aft of turret 3 with huge secondary explosion, perhaps main battery magazine explosion.

Coastwatcher reports confim enemy radio intercepts that indeed Haruna is no longer in the service of the Emperor..........


16June1942

Beaufort strike from Moresby claims torpedo hits on CL Naga, CA Ashigara, BB Kirishima.

Enemy bombardment force retreated NE toward Rabaul during the following night.

Have established tangible presence on Luganville. Cornado squadron now flying regular recon of upcoming objective.

CV Yorktown underway for further repairs at Pearl.

To Commanders South Pacific

OPERATION WATCHTOWER

With the victory in the Coral Sea a door has been opened for offensive action in the South Pacific theatre of operations to begin immediately.

Although the enemy has a presence on the island of Guadalcanal and on the island of Tulagi, frequent recon of the island has determined this presence to be insubstantial in defense capability.

Enemy submarine activity in South Pacific has dropped to a manageable level as reported by the theatre commander.

Port Moresby's defenders have a good toehold on the ground and thier fighter aircraft are attriting enemy attack capability in the air. Though the enemy holds Buna in a strong grip, it is difficult for the enemy to reinforce thier position and supply existing troops due to our air supremacy over Papua. Lae has yet to become a base ffrom which the enemy can launch offensive operations against our assets.

Offensive ground capability in Nomea is sufficient for the assault on Guadalcanal and Tulagi. The troops have been prepped and are spoiling for a fight.

The unknown factor is enemy carrier forces that may be or may not be in the area. The Japanese have at least 3 undamaged fleet carriers that could be used in the attempt to thwart this offensive.

CV's Yorktown and Hornet are currently in Pearl undergoing repairs. Hornet should be available for operations in about 30 days, Yorktown in 90 days. CV's Enterprise and Saratoga currently in South Pacific theatre. CV Wasp due in Pacific theater within 30 days.

Operation Watchtower -- the invasion of Guadalcanal will commence upon the arrival of Wasp in South Pacific. Fast battleship North Carolina currently enroute to Nomea.

Due to the commitment of landing craft to Torch operations, the available shipping in theatre will be used to get the troops on the beach.

This operation will no longer be referred to as "Shoestring", especially by flag officers.

Good luck gentlemen. The Japanese have shot thier bolt --- they have run roughshod over us for six months, it is time now to take the fight to them.

British Admiralty War Proposal Pacific 1943

With a strong line of defense drawn at the Burma/India border and the success of the RAF against air offensives against our assets in this theatre, Great Britain proposes opening a third axis of advance against the Japanese empire in 1943.

It is clear that the enemy's main objective in opening hostilities with the Western Democracies was natural resource self-suficiency and thereby the end of Japanese dependence on western raw materials to fuel her economy. Malaya and the Dutch East Indies natural resources are critical for her to maintain her warfighting capability.

Britain proposes that she along with the available forces of Australia begin planning for the retaking of these valuble Japanese conquests for ultimate execution in a year's time, beginning with the liberation of Java and Timor, both accessible from the Indian Ocean and the continent of Australia.

With the dastardly Hitler mired in the deathgrip of our Soviet allies and the imminent threat to the Suez fading in Egypt, we feel that suitable assets should be available for this plan which is only now in preliminary stages of development.

Taken in concert with the planned American push through the Solomons and along the back of the New Guinea "bird", and the propsed thrust to the Marianas in the Central Pacific, the British High Command feels that the war in the Pacific can come to a swift and victorious end much faster than has been previously thought.

Bombers and torpedo bombers operating from Port Moresby including US B-17's, RAAF and Dutch Beauforts have reported 5 torpedo hits on Japanese battleship Mutsu and 4 on superbattleship Yamato along whith various bomb hits that have wrecked the upper works of Yamato.

US submarine S-43 reported torpedo hit on and sinking of Mutsu as she tried to flee the area.

More bomb hits on Yamato northwest of Rabaul that resulted in the destruction of several 6" mounts.

CVWasp now in the SOPAC, approximately 2 days from Nomea, will refuel and join CV's Enterprise and Saratoga in covering Watchtower landings in seperate task forces. 2nd Marines now embarking transports.

Surface action group centered on Prince of Wales,Repulse, and North Carolina will bombard Lunga prior to landing.

British forces in the Indian Ocean report they have reinvested Anadaman(sp?) Island with infantry and aviation support components. 2 squadrons of Spitfire Vb enroute to Anadaman via AK's.

Enemy seems unaware of these operations, all is quiet in the skies of Rangoon...........

US Marines have landed on Guadalcanal, supported by 24thRCT US Army.

Enemy airforces attacking with twin-engine bombers out of Rabaul and Truk have scored hit on Prince of Wales, radar destroyed, fires out. Many enemy planes destroyed or damaged. Bombarment force retiring Nomea.

Initial supply vessels will disembark supplies as soon as all troops ashore.

Replenishment TF making full speed and expected to rendezvous with US carrier forces supporting landings.

No enemy naval activity noted at this time as reported by picket submarines operating throughout the Solomons chain.

Will advise as situation warrants.

Marine and Army forces have taken Lunga and have forced the enemy into the jungle beyond, friendly casualties are light. Ground units consolidating positions.

Covering CV force currently replenishing SE of objective. Destroyers operating in screen have depth charged 2 enemy submarines and reported multiple hits to both.

Enemy minefield off Lunga neutralized.

Port Moresby PBY's reported enemy carrier force north of New Britain 2 days ago but have been unable to locate since. Hudson bombers sent to attack enemy force from Port Moresby on the day of detection met with stiff CAP resistance. Hudson's RTB without actual sighting of enemy carrier(s).

Covering CV's placed immediately in naval attack stance should enemy CV force attempt to interfere with Guadalcanal operations.....

First dedicated supply TF unloading at Lunga

811th EAB enroute to Lunga to begin construction of airfield.

Tulagi Taken

Strong US ground forces comprised of 1st and 2nd Marine Raider Battalions, Americal Division have landed and taken the Japanese seaplane base of Tulagi. Enemy unit destroyed: 6th Kure SNLF. Dispatched small supply TF to support units on Tulagi. Strong twin egined bomber attacks repulsed by fighter's based at Henderson Field. No hits to any ships.

CV's Saratoga and Enterprise on station providing air cover for supply and troop transport TF's ingress and egress from the area.

SBD's from this TF have sank two enemy transports attempting resupply mission to enemy units still on Guadalcanal.

Two enemy submarines have been depth charged until contact lost.

Expansion of Henderson Field proceeding as scheduled.

CV Wasp TF returning to Nomea for rest and resupply.

CV Wasp will then be detached to Central Pacific command for upcoming Tarawa operation.

Milne Bay, NG Taken

Australian 7th Division have conducted amphibious landing at Milne Bay and have successfully routed the enemy into the jungles of Papua. Enemy twin engine bomber attacks on transport and supporting fleet have been unsuccessful thus far. Fighter support from Port Moresby impossible due to limited range of fighter aircraft available.

CA Indianapolis damaged en route to rendezvous with transport fleet by Japanese submarine off the coast of Australia. Indianapolis detatched back to Brisbane for repair.

Recon flights over Buna show large enemy troop concentration there. So far no enemy incursion over the Owen Stanley ridge. Interception of supply ships in this and Lae area have been extremely successful.

Hudson flight reported hit on enemy battleship Ise two days prior to this report.

Summary Combat Report for Naval Action 5-7 Sept.1942


The following is a summation of action in the Solomon Sea involving SWPAC and SOPAC forces in engagments with enemy naval units.

On 5 September 1942 enemy carrier taskforce presence in the Solomon Sea was detected south of New Britain after the capture of Milne Bay. Enemy aircraft from this taskforce raided Port Moresby and was repelled with heavy loss by Port Morseby CAP.

Second raid by enemy carrier planes devastated transport force unloading at Milne Bay, heavy losses in troops and shipping though majority of Aus. 7th Inf. Div. troops were ashore.

Search flight squadrons operating from Port Morseby have been informed that they must re-double thier vigilance concerning the detection and identification of enemy units before they pose a threat to landing operations hencewith.

Halsey commanding CV TF covering shipping operations in the lower Solomon chain took it upon his own initiative to move westward in order to engage the enemy carrier fleet east of the Louisades on 6 September.

Heavy weather prevented Halsey's TF from launching strike against the enemy in the am of 6 Sept. Afternoon raids were successful in penetrating the fighter screen of the enemy.

Results were as follows:

CV Hiyo -- 4 1000lb bomb hits, 2 torpedo
CV Shokaku -- 6 1000lb bomb hits
CV Zuikaku -- 3 1000lb bomb hits
CV Ryujo -- 3 1000lb bomb hits

US strike aircraft suffered great loss due to high concentration of enemy CAP and accurate AA fire.

Enemy struck back with great intensity and US CAP was not impressive in it's performance.

CV Enterprise 3 250kg bomb hits, 1 torpedo
CV Saratoga 4 250kg hits, 2 torpedo

Saratoga planes returning from raid diverted to Enterprise. Both CV's making enough steam to maintain TF integrity, TF began steaming south toward Nomea. Enemy TF split into two groups at last contact.

Halsey launched another strike, much reduced from previous day's engagement, against enemy and scored 2 500lb hits on CV Zuikaku with no apparent penetration of the flight deck.

TF returning to Nomea, Saratoga making steam for 19 knots.

CV Wasp recalled to SOPAC due to damage to Enterprise and Saratoga.

Have placed one 21in. torpedo into port side of Yamato class battleship SE of Mindinao. Depth charge attack avoided, Seadragon undamaged.

Believe enemy battleship heavily damaged from earlier action.

Summary of Recent Actions in SOPAC Area

Enemy radio intercepts confirm sinking of enemy fleet carriers Hiyo and Shokaku, CA Myoko.

Enemy activity in Solomon Sea greatly reduced due to heavy damage inflicted on enemy surface forces menacing Milne Bay area.

CV's Saratoga and Enterprise en route to Sydney for repairs. CV Wasp to remain in SOPAC area of operations.
