In testing, 1.20b resolved the vast majority of sound issues for our testers, but some players may still be affected. We believe there must be a very small number of sound files left at this point that could be causing issues. We need you to go through a few steps, then if you still have sound problems, follow the instructions below.

1. Download the latest sound drivers for your card. Many testers still had 2001/2002 drivers and their problems disappeared after an upgrade. Install them and reboot. Check for sound issues.

2. Download DirectX 9.0c from Microsoft. Microsoft DirectX Site (just click on the DirectX 9.0c button once there) Install it and reboot. Check for sound issues.

3. Click on Start, then Run and type in "dxdiag". Let it load and then click on the Sound tab. See the Hardware Sound Acceleration Level slider? Try pulling it back a notch. Check for sound issues. If they persist, keep trying to move it back one notch at a time, checking again after each change. When you're done, click on "Save All Information" and let it create a text file.

4. If you've done all that and are still getting either sound crashes or distortion, we will have to try to fix your problems in the next patch. If you would like to volunteer some time to help us find what's happening on your system please e-mail me at erikr@matrixgames.com with the following subject header:
"WitP 1.20 Sound Volunteer"
Please include the following info:
The dxdiag text file you created in Step 3
Your real name
Your forum account name

Thanks in advance. I hope that we can resolve what issues remain quickly.

Regards,

- Erik

Thanks, Erik.

My "sound problem" PC is my home desktop, and I'm currently on vacation in Hawaii. I won't be back home for another 11 days. Believe me, I'll test the new patch on it the minute I get home. :)

I'll volunteer again. I've got no CTD's (yet) but the screeching sound persists.

I started a new Grand Campaing with Scenerio 15. I had the original CTD with the sound bug during combat animations. Worked fine with sound turned off and when I renamed the sound files from before. All drivers are as up to date as I can find. I now play the game without combat animations to speed it up. On Dec 8., when switching from night time to day time, I experienced a CTD. I don't have a save because it was only the second day and I usually save on a weekly basis or when turning in for the evening.

I will check and see if it happens again with no sound.

Here is my DXDIAG save:

At this moment no problems when I switch combat animations off. Although with the “dive plane attack sound” the sound get disturbed a little.

For my system it is a big step forward since version 1.0

Reran Dec 8. turn anew. I think I did all of the same moves except I forgot to evacuate the POW and Repulse from Singapore and set China to Comp Control. I ran it with the sound folder renamed and had no problems.

BTW: I have accel set at basic accel and only have 1 more notch to move it back in DXdiag.

BTWII: I set accel to no accel and it did play the turn without a CTD.

While upgrading DirectX and your drivers will not hurt, it will probably not fix anything either.

I was affected by the sound "bug" too, even after 1.20. The game would CTD and instead of some sounds only screeching could be heard.

SOLUTION:
The bug is in one of your codecs NOT in the game or in the sounds. Most likely you have installed a codec pack or an individual codec that has replaced a standard one and IS BUGGY.

I had ACE Mega Codecs Pack 5.93 and after uninstall everything works fine. I can play all the sounds that were bad before and now they are clean and nice.
If you have installed some other pack, you may not be so lucky as some of these packs are notoriously difficult to remove from the system.
Uninstalling individual codecs (RISKY!!!) may or may not help - unfortunately I am no expert on codecs and do not know which ones the WITP sounds use.
Maybe someoene from MATRIX can tell us what codecs do the sounds use and then remove only those.

If you cannot fix the sounds by uninstalling the codec pack, these are the options:
1. Wait for Matrix to tell what kind of codecs do the sounds use, until then rename sound DIR.
2. Try to remove codecs individually immediately - AT YOUR OWN RISK. This may lead to not being to able to play movies, sounds AT ALL.
3. Reinstall Windows. This will surely work, so....

Hope this helps.

Salute,

yes the patch didnt change anything regarding the sound issue. I even get CTD in the main screen now before i even start a game. Would be nice if matrix can get those codecs they use online if this is the problem.

I have now turned sound off again by changing the folder to no sound. I get the squelching sound that sounds like a dial up modem. I have animations turned off but I here it when bombers are attacking.

I know the driver for my sound card is dated 2003 but I have not been able to find an updated driver. (See dxdiag above).

BTW: It is updated to 1.20

Have any of you tried turning off sound harwareacceleration? That helped me with another game some time ago.

EDIT: Saw Erik Rutins mentioned it.

For me all of the items below are true. I wonder if others still with the CTD are experiencing the same:

Music sounds normal/fine. The bells and clicks noises with mouse clicks are all fine.
The _only_ problem is during combat animations
The CTD is rare, but the sound effects during in the animations are _always_ odd sounding. There are boops and beeps and odd noises amidst the normal, expected sound effects.

Is it a problem with the background (the engine noise etc) and the gun/bomb noises interacting in some way?
Is it a problem in anyway related to having removed some of the sfx files while using version 1.00/1.10? (I removed the game, erased everything and reinstalled 1.00, then patched to 1.20. Still the problem.

What is different about these sound effects and the ones in Uncommon Valor? I didn't have any problem with those.

In any case I have little interest in the sound effects anyhow. I would rather let a turn run, then read better reports at the end than listen to a lot of machine gun noises.

For me, it was like Blackvoid said, the ACE mega codecs pack. I uninstalled it and voila, with the 1.20 patch (and now 1.21) it seems to be running great. No weird sounds or anything. Now, i can´t say that i don´t have any problems left, because this is the first time the game has not CTD, so i have never played it...

Well now i will print the manual and get on with it! Thanks Blackvoid!!

/Peter

I don't get wierd noises - I just get CTDs clicking buttons, such as exit, ot a ship selection.

No Codec Packs, and I have done the recommends above; directx9c, etc.

NOSOUNDS gets me back up

I set accel to none. I played all the way until Dec. 14th with the sounds on. I do get funny sounds. I don't have combat anim on. I just had my first ctd. I wasn't looking at the screen when it happened unfortunately. The CTD's are still there though.

Updated to 1.21 now.

Hope I can shed some light on this sound problem. I upgraded to v1.20 using all the interim updates. I have a soundblaster live card under XP, upgraded to the latest sound drivers and still get choppy sounds and CTD's. Now I have the original UV game, so I renamed the WITP SOUND dir and copied accross the UV SOUND dir. Guess what - sound worked with no problems!! So i can play WITP using the old UC sounds, have been playing for hours with no CTD's or sound issues.

One point is the UV sounds are larger in size than the WITP sounds, and this suggests that the newer sounds are compressed or a different format. I can play WITP sounds with no issues under media player, so i'm not convinced it's a codec issue.

Anyway, if you have the original UV, you can play with sound.
Thanks

The UV sounds are wav format and the WITP files are sfx... So this sound strange. But I did as you and...... now CTD

you may have done this - don't forget to rename the UV sounds from .wav to .sfx

Then again it may only work on my PC!!

I followed the suggestion also and am listening to UV sounds now in WitP. Thanks a lot. Now the next question: are the WitP sounds improved from UV? i.e. am I still missing some of my gaming experience?
