Alright, so by reading comments on this forum I have gotten the general feeling that this game is great, but that it was released too early, and has many many bugs, which should be adressed in the next patch. (a considerable problem is the lack of any japanese aircraft production in ALL THE SMALLER SCENARIOS??). So my question is: buy the game now, or wait for next patch? Is the game still fun the way it is?

It is the best game I have ever played and would even be if they stopped the support now.

BossGnome,

I'm sure others will answer, but FYI the Japanese production problem existed for about a day as that was the time between the release of 1.20 which caused it and the release of 1.21 which fixed it. Ok, back to the regularly scheduled programming...

Regards,

- Erik

People having been thinking I have been taking shots at the people that made this game (which is not the case), but here is what I think. Yes, it may have been released too early, and yes, it might have some bugs. But the truth is, this is, hands down, the best wargame I have ever played. The fact that you can do anything, the fact that every last gunmount is on the ship, as opposed to a generic "Anti ship" rating, allow for one of the most realistic games ever made. There are bugs and errors in the game, but considering how big of a game this is, it is not anything major.

You might want to wait for the next patch, because once you start playing, you won't stop. Whether you wait or not, you must get this game.

Several games were released early, and several this has killed. However, despite having some problems because of it, this game is still bar none the best war game. None of the bugs kill the game, and the few that did were readily fixed.

So, my advice, get it, and get it now. Just be sure to set your life on hold, because you wont have one while playing this game.

The smaller scenario issue was patched quicker than Michael Jacksons hands in a child care center. It has come a long way since day one IMHO and now is in the "tweaking phase". If your are remotely interested in this type of genre/theater what are you waiting for...BUY IT.

If I was buying it over again and knew what I do now, Id probably wait for one more patch. I only suggest that becuase I dont have a lot of time to actually play the game and I want a game that I can just play without having to examine every combat oddity to consider if it is a bug or not. This game came at a premium price and I guess as a result I didnt expect the final product require more beta testing after its release, which is essentially what has happened here.

That being said i think this game is currently quite good and should be seriously considered by anyone interested in this theatre, but I also expect it to be a a much better game after a couple more patches to iron out the remaining bugs and tweak some of the combat aspects.

First off, that's correct, there IS NO Japanese aircraft production in the smaller scenarios. It's all handled by replacements. In Matrix/2by3's rush to get a patch out to customers for the weekend, there was a slight-mix up with a few database files which didn't have replacements for Japanese aircraft. This was remedied in a very short time.

I may be going against the flow here, but I don't think it was necessarily released too early - well OK then, maybe a week too early. The only major issues have been the 771 error and sound problem, both of which should really have been caught before release. Otherwise changes so far haven't changed it from a game that's unplayable to one that is: it was highly playable and enjoyable since day 1. (Well week 2 for me as I had the 771 (or was it 772?) error.)

With a game this complex the developers could spend years tweaking it and making it better, but the bottom line is that it's great now. My advice would be to get it, if you're interested, and by the time you're comfortable with the game mechanics/interface and ready to start a long scenario, the next patch will likely be out. And if it's not, you can still have a great game.

Despite some reservations about the UI, I think the question is; are you really interested in the Pacific theatre in WWII? My answer was yes, so I bought the game. What's your answer?

Cheers,

Erik:

There is a rumor going about that the "accelerated" shipyard building for Japan doesn't work. So you can build a ship using an accelerated pace, but the ship doesn't deliver until the normal unaccelerated pace is completed.

Do you happen to know anything about this? I just began my first PBEM game, and I am wondering if I should put it on hold until this is patched. I am kind of hesitant to invest a another hundred+ hours and 50 turns or more of PBEM playing time, and my shipyard points, until my first accelerated build destroyers are delivered (or not).

Let me know if you have any information on this. Thanks!!!

This game was worth buying on day 1, and has consistently improved since then. In terms of value received, the price of this game was the best money I have ever spent.

If/when I purchase it will be a hard copy only. So my question on this is: Will the CD have the latest patched version 1.21?

Whoa! Bugs, yes, but aside from users with hardware related problems, these "bugs" are either minor nuisances or nothing more than a lack of a feature some get emotional about (on-the-fly upgrade path changes, for instance). I have yet to find a bug in my play that really matters to me at all. OOB? I could care less if every carrier was named CV-1, CV-2, CV-3, etc....

And you get end up getting yourself into always waiting for the next bug patch.... Just get it, dig in, and have fun. No show stoppers even remotely present as far as I can tell....

No. I doubt they will ever release a new CD, at least not for a while. No big deal, so long as the patches remain mostly cumulative (only have to install the latest one to get all the fixes).

This is a very good game. There are some things that need to be patched (map issues, order of battle, convoy loading, maybe Japanese shipyards and pathing )

But on the whole, I am amazed by how stable and expansive the game is.

Pretty sure the download version was pumped to 1.20, that would be the same thing that gets cut to CD.

Odds are they'll probably repack 1.30 for release too.

My opinion: was not released early. Yes, there were some tweaks made, bugs fixed, but I used that time quite fruitfully by learning the system. Now that 1.21 is out, I'm full steam into this puppy.

BUY IT NOW! Great, great game.

Search under the thread "UV until Patch" for my comment about my father not buying a color tv (ever) because he kept waiting for the next, better color tv.

Wade in now. Given the crowd who made this game, they will be polishing it up for a long time.

Its by far one of the best wargames I've ever played (exception: Combat mission series). Its a good mix of Operational and Strategic warfare. The only downside is the magnitude of controlling the entire Pacific campaign. Controlling every land, sea and air assets in several different operations, planning (and tagging units for) future ops; is quite a duanting task. If you buy it be prepared to invest TONS of your time. My first night playing (scen 15 Japan) I spent the whole afternoon, just figuring out where I had what and making a plan, giving orders only to progress one day in game time b4 bedtime! If your looking for something thats less time consuming, I highly recommend Uncommon Valor instead. I'm still playing that in lieu witp, until its all patched up. UV is purley operational and is far easier to jump in to then witp. Have Fun!

Yep agree with all previous comments. This game will just get better & better as time goes on now. Also I'd like to say that when I tried to d/l 1.20 & 1.21 I had major probs that I didn't have a clue how to sort out. But thanks to Reiryc's help I managed to solve the problem. So not only is this a fab game but there are fab people connected with it who are prepared to help others with problems. That makes it well worth the price in my book. Many big games developers would do well to take note as there are not many out there that offer that level of help to customers.

This game is very fun and addictive, a real achievement in wargaming. With a database this massive, OOB issues are bound to happen. Playable from day 1, it will improve in time and is worth the cost.

Best wargame of any genre on the market, bar none.

Even with the bugs, mostly minor, the oddities etc, it's the most fun I've ever had with a wargame. I thought nothing would ever replace closecombat as my favorite, but this did it.

The game is playable and enjoyable even with the aforementioned issues/bugs etc. So you really aren't losing out on anything by purchasing it now and enjoying it as more enhancements and bug fixes take place as none are show stoppers anymore.
