In the long game I started after the latest patch the Ai took Rangoon and did a good job of it. I had loaded it up with supplies and built up up the fort level. As the last of my transports pulled away the AI had put Betty's in range and enough fighters to deal with the AVG unit I had there. I figured to use Rangoon as an anvil and had put a couple of infantry units that start the game NW to the north of Rangoon and when the IJA forces entered the Rangoon hex to lay siege I would run them down south to block its suppy by sitting on trail.

Well when the IJA force got to the crossroads north of Rangoon instead of turning south to hit the city he goes northeast and hits my cut off units. I cant get out of the hex before he attacks so they retreat TOWARDS Rangoon . Well I figure it would be nice to set some sort of general retreat direction but all is not lost anyways, i'll just send them due north out of the way and then finish my plan. Well the IJA comes back to the crossroad, turns north and chases them down and knocks them back south. This ends up with the units being driven into Rangoon . It sucks but all is not lost. Rangoon is still strong and It'll just take some time to run a unit down block the suppy now that the IJA unit has laid siege.

Now a IJN carrier group shows up in the bay for a bit ( not like I was planning to run any ships around in that area anyways) and the force at Rangoon is banging its head on the city at 0-1 odds. No problem at all, my blocking force is on its way to cut off the IJA units suppy and what can that carrier group do to me if I dont come out to fight?

Thats when I first notice it. A group of transport ships heading for Rangoon. Its hugging the coast and within range of the betty's all the way there and along with the carrier group that I've lost track of I figure that if the AI wants to ship suppies to its force its not worth it to try and stop till the trail is blocked also.

Well I move up some buffs to bomb the transports. Not much luck and they reach the city zone. Next thing I know the combat odds jump from 0-1 to 5-1 and Rangoon falls.
I didnt expect the AI to ship troops up there but I have to say it a nice suprise in a nasty sort of way.

I would say thats a reat move by the AI. If it keeps it up, you could be in for a rough ride.

How many troops did you have in Rangoon?

Sorry for your loss there, but good to hear the AI can take an objective.

In addition to my PBEM's I'm playing one against the AI but I'm Japan. It's early so he's in retreat mode, but it appears to be orderly, even trying to sneak units out of the PI.

This is where you reload a save game and claim the AI sucks.

I've been having some weird retreats in the Rangoon area myself. I'm still holding Rangoon in late March 42. I've fought off the first attack, forcing a large stack of IJA units to retreat. They came back, minus the artillery they lost in the retreat. While the situation was in flux, I got the 14th Indian Division behind the main enemy force. They took Moulmein back and then attacked Tavoy. I was just *not* having any luck against the Ind. Brigade defending, so I risked a brigade and some transports to reinforce at Tavoy. It had taken long enough that the AI was atatckign Rangoon again, but since Tavoy was a major airbase I decided to risk it.

The extra troops did the trick, and the Japanese lost a whopping 132 aircraft when Tavoy fell. I then pulled the brigade out and back to Rangoon, but not before the fortifications had been reduced. The 14th got stomped and a thousand survivors are trying to makie it to Chinese lines, but it was worth it to take out 30+ Bettys.

The Imperial Army is still trying to take Rangoon, so I've decided to make a forward fight for Burma. I'm keeping my flanks defended and am holding troops back, just in case Rangoon goes.

LOL! Or you peek at what the AI side is planning and use that information to gain a rushing victory...and then claim the AI sucks.

have seen the AI do some organized chaotic moves so far 4/43 but im playing on very hard, so not sure of the extra bonuses make it seem better, or it's just plain ol agressive as all get out... currently New Guiney has been a major fight, and have had to fight off midway twice now, carrier losses are equal, both sides have lost (I think via FOW) 3
heavy carriers and a couple of CVE's each... yorktown and lexington did NOT survive coral sea, and the enterprise and sara went running home to get a bandaid

a really BIG bandaid

LoL! This gets me almost as much as a person who reloads and at the same time complains that the AI cheats. There's no bigger human cheat than reloading! The AI does not get that privilege. In my game against the AI, I have made my share of stooopid mistakes, and I'm living with all of them.
