I'm hoping not to see something like that on my first PBEM.

I'd like to know how many eventually sink.

I wonder though, how many gamers actually use the variable start option?

I'd use it more if it wasn't random.

I will use vary starts all the time if my opponents agree to let me attack somewhere else if I so choose.

Can be a real game killer after spending many hours doing your first turn and then get bushwhacked by the Allied CV's.
That far from home KB is doomed if any take more than 30% flt damage.

Of course my crews use the "lets cut holes on the other side of the ship so the water will drain out" method of Damage Control.

I once tried for two hours to get HOME PLATE as the Allies. I may be a glutton for punishment, but I prefer such masochism to be confined to actual play.

I just ran another random game start, this time the US carrier was caught NW of Hawaii, both the Lex and Enterprize were sunk! Less BB damage though, I will stick to the historical setup I think

I got the *infield* draw too, us CV's struck KB without incurring a counterstrike. I thought I had only dinged two CV's but a month or two later I found out the Zuikaku had sunk near one of the home islands.

Lex looks to be in bad shape, but I'm guessing the Enterprise survived and can be repaired in about six weeks to two months. If you're a battleship fan, this is not a bad start as most of your BBs look like they were hardly scratched!
