Ok, here it goes! My first WitP PBEM game against my old esteemed opponent Wobbly
It may be a little ambitious, I've not played more than 15-20 test turns against the AI before starting this scen 15 as Japan!
I have studied the game, it's manual - and not at least - all the excellent posts on the forums! This, plus previous UV experience gave me enough confidence to give it a try.

Learning as you go is one of my favorite approaches, but I'll undoubtedly make a lot of mistakes....
I'd appreciate if the readers post questions or try to answer the questions I post!
Wobbly talked about creating a seperate thread for his part of the AAR, but I'll leave that to him!

This is actually only my second AAR - and I enjoyed making the first one! (Still 3 weeks to go in the old UV game against Crocky, and we'll finish it shortly.)

I've played 3-4 UV games against Wobbly, and I've really enjoyed them all! He's a great opponent, and I'm quite certain I'll get it handed to me this time! (Somehow I've ended up playing the superior side in our old games, so I wanted to make it up to him this time...even though this may not initially be the case.)

Game settings; Scenario 15, 7th December surprise, full human controll over subs, replacements and industry.
We had to replay T1 as Wobbly used other settings than what I did, and these negated mine and sent his cv's hurrying to PH! The Enterprise went straight down and huge airwings were slaughtered. The Hiryu took 36 sys and 22 fire damage from 2-3 bomb hits. 3 BB's were blown out of the water by combined torpedo and 800kg bomb hits by the Kates.

This is were my first questions takes shape; In the second T1 attempt, we used the same turn but with 7th December surprise - and the effect was that none of the 50 Kates that attacked from 5000ft dropped torpedoes!? Me don't get this... The fact that the Val's are useless against even the old PH bb's also seems somewhat unrealistic to me.

I've used the WitP unofficial strategy guide to prep the Japanese industry and forces. Thank to Kid, Joel and the rest of you that put it together!!
To the plan: Hm, I must admit that I lack a grand strategy The goal is to try to reach the historical highwater mark of the Japanese empire sometime by mid 1942!
I think the Japanese didn't plan much longer than this either, so we're following the historical lines quite closely already...!

On T1 the following bases were invaded:
Wake Island
Guam
Tarawa
Rabaul
Kuching
Khota Baru
Naga
Batan Island
Vigan
Legaspi
Aparri
Davao
Jolo
Lingayen
Kuantan

Things went mostly according to plan, and Wake, Batan Isl and Tarawa were all captured.
Coastal guns and airstrikes damaged a few transports and a destroyer, but nothing serious.

In China a plan to capture the main railroads in addition to a few main bases exists.
Chinese forces at Nanching were ejected and Hong Kong is under siege.

Pearl Harbor was a mediocre affair - all 8 battleships were hit and blew up the magazines on
the Pennsylvania and West Virginia? 2 others were heavily damaged.

What? An Air-raid! I thought you said did I want my 'hair braided'. What use is that to a bald man?

Yes, yes, of course I was asleep.

Now what was that again, an air raid, where by whom?

The Japanese, at Pearl Harbour, I thought embargoing their oil might make them tetchy. They've got teenages haven't they? Why couldn't they farm them for oil!

Alright, that's out of the system. As PzB has stipulated we are going hammer for tongs in a PBEM clash of Steel. Other than reading this first of his listings I will not be reading his thread again. The thinking behind this, as those of you that followed UV and Herbie and my AARs, is to be able to write our plans and ideas down while asking those in the know what they recommend as steps to take. PzB will not be looking at my thread and I will not look at his. At some future juncture we can leisurely read through the threads and see the progression of our demise. You of course will be able to see attacks and surprise occuring before we do and can brace yourselves for the result. I would ask you that you don't use this fore knowledge to enlighten either of us.

A first perusal of the combat results bodes ill, it appears I will not have much of a Western Fleet to repel the slimey invader - 2 magazine explosions - ouch. I also notice that he has taken Wake - something I have not managed to do using the historical (unchanged) first turn - maybe he bolstered the attack. He has also not attacked in a couple of locations i would have - maybe to my own deteriment. Anyway, I am at work as of this writing so I'll have to take a look at my turn but I will start a new thread soon with some of the thoughts about what I plan to do for the first turn. You can add your ideas there and we shall hopefully provide some good entertainment while we both feel our way into this massive game.

Al

Should be good reading PzB.

Once you have sharpened your claws on Wobbly, maybe you will have some room on your dance card for me.

(I assume that our UV campaign is "on the backburner" then?)

Good luck and good hunting!

Thought I waited for your turn Denisohn...will try to locate it!
Would like to play a game as the Allies soon, so maybe we could swap from UV to WitP?
My capacity is somewhat stretched at the moment, and I have to finish one game in order to start another one.

Turn 3 - things are still going somewhat according to schedule! The capitalist conspiracy led by Wobbly moved a strong combat formation into Lingayen and delayed it's fall. Seems like I've moved most of my support units in here, but I should have sufficient force to capture the base as soon as everything is unloaded.

Heavy fighting for Rabaul - more forces on their way! Nell's have been transferred to Truk, and will go to Rabaul as soon as it has been secured.

Seems like the enemy forces in Malaya are moving south towards Singapore! Kuantan fell today and Khota Bharu will fall tomorrow. Air units moved into Kuching and are mostly placed on naval attack.

Kuching is also captured, and strong level bomber formations have been placed on naval attack here as well. Singapore port seems to be empty, and I hope to intercept the Repulse and PoW!

The dive bomber attacks on Hong Kong were extremely painful, and I'm unsure whether to commit them to ground attack again. Level bombers will continue the job. 2 divisions, a HQ and arty are now in place and will bombard the city for a few days before the attack starts in earnest.

In China Japanese troops have entered into Changsa and will bombard the place until all the forces in the area have been assembled. I'm leaving garrison units on the railroads, as I don't want my supply lines cut!

The KB has just retired a small distance northwest of PH and will refuel tomorrow. The plan is to lie still for a few days, and if undetected try to intercept the US cv's and bb's and other convoys that may leave PH or use it as a staging point.
The most important thing is to keep Wobbly guessing - he won't dare to use his precious cv's with much audacity as long as he's unsure about the whereabouts of the KB!

I need some advice from the rest of you guys;
At Saigon I got 3 bde's and a regiment + shipping - so were does I send them? I want to keep a reserve, but there are also a few tempting targets! At Borneo, only Kuching has been captured, and I'm leaving the oil rich bases for now so the evil Wobbly can't bomb them. I'm thinking about landing forces at Mersing or Johore to prevent the forces in northern Malaya from getting unscatched into Singapore. Hm.....suggestions?

I'm really getting addicted to this now
Havn't posted any feedback about WitP yet, I like to look into things before I start handing out criticism!-) Must say that I've not had many problems, downloaded the game
without much effort and got the disc in the mail 14 days later. I've had issues with the sound, but have decided to disable it for now...don't really need it anyway.

Must congratulate the programmers with a most fantastic game!
This is a really, really great game and I'm quite sure I'm going to enjoy it for years to come!

Turn 4 - I'm starting to see were I should have inserted more combat forces! A few bases are very difficult to capture, Kuantan is still holding stubbornly out - and I'm afraid a lot of the Allied troops on the Malayan peninsula will be able to withdraw into fortress Singapore. Well, I got time enough!

Rabaul was also a gamble, and the forts are difficult to reduce. Have ordered more attacks, and I think it should be possible to take it within a few days or a week.
Don't have many surface combat vessels, but a tf of patrol crafts are guarding the transports. Cruisers and destroyers are currently on their way from Wake and Guam to bombard and support the invasion forces.

Today's closest call came at Kendari were evil Wobbly sent in a large force of 14 dd's led by the light cruiser Marblehead! 2 brave IJN destroyers sacrificed themselves and protected the transports. The base was captured, and search planes, Zeros and long range torpedo bombers are already in place! The defenseless transports have been ordered out to sea until surface combat units can reach the base and provide protection.

Lingayen was also captured today, and all the units are now resting and waiting for the big inf units to clean up the northern bases and march on Clark Field.
Base forces are also on their way to the newly captured bases, and will start pounding Clark Field, Manila and Bataan.

Naga is also proving a hard nut, but another division will land shortly and start pushing northwards.

In China an enemy unit advanced towards Canton, and I've ordered a few units to reinforce the city - 1 bde from the divisions attacking Hong Kong + 2 NLF forces that will be shipped in tomorrow. Changsa is being bombarded, but an attack further north in the country was repulsed with heavy losses. There are more Chinese troops than I thought, and I have to be careful.

I now see that I could not have invaded any more bases on T1, as there are not enough forces to provide cover for all the landing tf's. I was foreshighted enough to send out large cargo tf's with supplies to the bases I expected to capture early, so I should be able to continue to push in no time.

Another landing will take place in northern Borneo as well.

Torpedo bombers scored hits on several transports trying to escapre from PI today - and I think more will be hit tomorrow.
The light carrier tf is moving towards Kendari and will strike any Allied ships they encounter - and will then take up a blocking position north of Darwin.
That should bag a few 'refugees'

The biggest gamble is to retain the KB outside PH - the carriers were refuelled today and ordered east towards the US West Coast.
2 battleships and a few dd's were dispatched and are moving towards Kwajalein. The replenishment tf will follow the KB east, and I hope to run into a few
enemy tf's going to or from PH. Search planes sighted a tf with ca's going east just south of PH today - and that is what made up my mind. A huge loop accross PH before I head towards Rabaul and Truk. Perhaps I can hit a unexpecting targets there as well.

Then I'll head up towards the Dutch bases and support the forces in the area - and perhaps raid the Indian Ocean.

Well, that's the plan anyway....)

A semi eventful turn..... Rabaul and Kuantan are still holding out, but I hope they'll fall tomorrow.
Another division has unloaded at Naga and should be able to advance towards Manila shortly. Base forces and aviation regiments are on their way to the new bases in PI.

Did one mistake and didn't send any BF's to Jolo - a lot of ships are rushing SE - and my lba's are not making too many sorties. A surface tf has been ordered to a Dutch base at Borneo tomorrow night though, and more are on their way.

Todays biggest achievement was the destruction of Repulse! Nell's slammed 4 torps into her side + one into the side of the Cl Mauritius. Unfortunately the PoW wasn't hit, but I may still get her tomorrow and close down 'Force Z' permanently!
The capitalist alliance will most likely try to rally their forces in the Dutch bases!

I will not get too close to that area before the KB is back! The Dutch torp bombers should not be underestimated!
Sally's and Lily's are set on naval attack at 100 feet - their crack crews are quite efficient, especially against the many unescorted and small tf's that are racing all over the place.

2 subs were lost today Is Allied asw really supposed to be that good this early in the war? 3 sinkings in deep water by a few old dd's concerns me! A ML and a DD were torpedoed and sunk off Borneo though....

My tf with 2 cve's and 2 cvl's are racing towards Kendari! I've upgraded one of the Claude sqd's and got 20 pilots and 27 Zero's aboard one of the cvl's. The 93 ac does not make up a huge force, and I'm more planning to use it as a fleet in being that can project a presence north of Darwin and pick off stragglers. Operating out of Kendari, I should be able to keep it supplied and give Al a small headache.

15 Zero's 'feinted' a sweep over PH - and this may have given my plan away. We're sticking to it though - a huge force of ca's spotted at Pearl. The circular sweep around the place will continue! I'm pretty sure there must be some fat pickings going to/from PH and the West Coast! I don't really want to sacrifice too many of my crack pilots on 'minor' targets, but at the same time I have to sink as many ships as possible early in the game while I'm on the offensive and my aircraft are still state of the art!

I accelerated the construction of the carrier Taiho as well as the Katsuragi and two of her sisters. The Shinano has been halted altogether...I need cv's in 43 and not in 44. Then they'll be slaughtered anyway! 1943 is the last year in which any parity can be achieved at sea....

Kuantan, Rabal and Changsa falls! Naga and Hong Kong still holds out....
A lot of dd's and smaller vessels were sunk in surface engagements and by lba's!
An annoying PT critter put a torp into the heavy cruiser Maya - at 27 sys dam, she
has to go home. A dd was also torpedoed by Dutch torp bombers - quite accurate
devils. Fortunately I could dock the ship at Kendari.

In all 4 Allied destroyers were sunk today - Poor Scout took 2 torps, and her magazines
exploded TWICE! Now she's nothing but a Star destroyer - star dust at best
Repulse was also finished by Nell's, so in total, a good turn!

Wobbly thought I intended to return the KB to PH - something I'm not! Hopefully
he'll think that I'm now on my way back home. I will send the replenishment tf in a narrower
sweep around PH and then rendezvous with the KB before starting on the return trek.

I dunno were the Allied cv's are - I don't think Wobbly will use them, he's to smart for that!
He can't stop me anyway, and the potential of loosing his valuable cv's will make him careful.

Malaysia

The Malaysian peninsula has now been cut of. Victoria Point was captured without resistance as the garrison retreated North.
It is currently cut off as I got forces on both sides of it.

Alor Starr is heavily fortified, and the attacking division takes heavy casualties - but succeeds in reducing the forts.
Landings at Mersing and Johla Baru is supposed to cut off Singapore from the rest of Malaysia - it will then be possible
to eliminate the retreating allied units before Singapore itself is attacked.

PI

The attacks at Naga were halted as landings to the north intends to cut the 2 defending divisions off. Don't want to fight them
again at Manila! (See attached map)

Also waiting for another division to land at Lingayen and for the northernmost units to destroy the remaining enemy units to
the north before we head to Clark Field - Manila and Bataan.

New Britain

A landing has been ordered at Gasmata - this will cut of the enemy units retreating from Rabaul

China

In China I'm mostly putting forces in blocking positions and attacking Yenen. Although losses were heavy, forts were again
reduced, and it should be possible to capture the base and threaten the more southerly Chinese units if not the northern
bases are heavily reinforced.

Another fort falls at Hong Kong, but the city is still holding out - at least for a few more days.

Sea

A surface tf surprises a few tankers, transports and a msw, sinking and damaging 3 of them
The KB was spotted moving west, not good at all - so Nagumo was ordered to head SW.
Wobbly says he doesn't like the gambit - but I'm not sure I'll manage to bag anything of value as long as I've been spotted.
Patience, patience......

Another sub is hit outside Hawaii, hm - this is getting really disturbing.

Air

More transports are hit by torpedo bombers and several sinks!
Nells have been transferred to Rabaul and Saipan to threaten ships that are trying to escapre west-southwest.
Base forces are now being sent to Guam and several other newly occupied bases. I got a lot of crack torpedo bombers
that I wish to use before proximity fuses and Hellcats makes chop suey out of them all!

Another bright day for the Empire of the Rising Sun
Capitalist forces are on the run everywhere and nothing seems to be able to stop the Jap
onslaught.

China

Hong Kong falls and 16000 troops surrenders! The division attached to the South Area HQ
will now be dispatched to the Philippines. I'm also considering to send the 54th Home defense div
from China to beef up the assault on Manila/Bataan. (See map)

Chinese units have entered Nanning, and airstrikes have been ordered. Reinforcements are also
on the march as the fall of Hong Kong freed up large forces.

The last fort falls at Yenen, but I don't get the odds - but more troops are on their way, and I
hope to capture the place soon.

In the south, a Chinese blocking force outside Changsa is ejected - and the entire railroad line
down to Changsa is now in Japanese hands. (See map)

Philippines

A blocking unit landed north of Naga and forces are unloading at Lamon Bay!
Base forces are almost in place, and soon air raids sirens will belch in Manila.
I'm reluctant to attack from long range and wish to preserve my best pilots.

Air

Air raids from Singapore hits the units that are advancing towards Mersing. Wobbly seems to
be using his af mostly to suppress my land forces!

Nelles hits another 7 ships and there doesn't seem to be a way out.....

My light carriers catches a big convoy escorted by the Dutch destroyet Van Ghent SW for Kendari.
5 ships are hit, and the carriers will close in and try to finish them off.
(Two ca's were also spotted far north of this convoy - will go looking for them later.)

A Zero is actually shot down by a Buffalo over Singapore!! *shocked*
Well, no rule without an exception....

Sea

A Dutch sub hits the cl Naka, but the torpedoes fails to detonate!
I-162 torpedoes the destroyer Thanet and its magazine blows.
Unfortunately I loose another sub outside Pearl. A huge asw group is hunting just west of PH,
and I have to move some of the subs now as they're too easy to find.

The KB is slicing SE and I now hope to find a few enemy tf's.

Great AAR! Could you do me and others a favor and check the base control of newly captured Changsha? In my game I'm experiencing a bug where the command remains "China Command" instead of the Chinese Expeditionary Force. Can't transfer any aircraft into Changsha, this has been reported on the Support board. Sorry for the hijack, you just took that base so I was curious. Good luck!

Brisd - Changsa is under Chinese Exp Force command! No problems at all here. Game was started with V1.2

I'm getting bogged downed in northern Malaysia, but otherwise, things are going according to plan.....

Malaysia

Taking heavy casualties at Alor Starr - has ordered the division to stand down, and 3 reserve bde's are loading at Saigon.
The Imp division has also been ordered south. Rangoon will have to wait until the peninsula has been captured!
Been wondering what to do with the 2 elite para regiments - I'm shipping em to Bangkok. Will use them as a reserve. Planning an 'Eben Emael' against Java or Rangoon later on.

Discovered that the small dirt roads are sloow :( Wears down my troops to march them, and I'm now considering to move them by sea instead. Landings at Mersing tomorrow - troop convoy for Jhola Bharu also leaving today. When Singapore has been cut off, I will ordered 2 divisions and a lot of arty in - and they will start bombarding it while I clean up the rest of the peninsula.

Philippines

Lamon Bay and the last Allied base in northern PI falls! The two PI divisions at Naga surrenders
A good day in other words.... Af in Lingayen built to size 4, and base forces are in place. Recon flights will commence against Manila, Clark Field and Bataan tomorrow.
Troops are now moving towards Clark Field. Not sure were the Allied forces will retreat from here - hoping that Wobbly will be forced to split his forces between Bataan and Manila as that would ease my task!

Borneo

Quiet here - troops landing unopposed at Jesselton

New Britain

Troops landing at Gasmata - Hudsons from Port Moresby unsuccsessfully bombs the escort.
A small detachment is also heading for Shortland.

Air

The mini KB really impressed me today! No less than 8 Allied ships in 4 different tf's were mauled today
I LOVE that cv's now launches dispersed attacks and not only concentrate all their ac on a single tf!
Will finish off the criples tomorrow and head NE! Enemy ca's spotted (see map)

Sea

Not much action today, I'm moving my subs from Hawaii and back to Kwajalein. 5-6 are ordered to the US West Coast though!
The KB has moved almost south of Hawaii, and will move south again until tomorrow before turning east. If no enemies are spotted, I will
replenish and lie in wait. Patience, patience....always!-)

Forgot to mention one thing... Checked the cost of switching a IJA Div from Home Defense Force, ugh!
3300 polit points. Me not think so

Seems like I don't have much more force to commit now as the reserves are heading to Malaysia and PI.
Will use the small SNLF units to mop up the smaller bases - Cagayen next.

Thanks for the Changsha info, I think I will be able to switch it to correct Japanese command when I get over 300 pp's saved up. Smash 'em up!

Not a lot to report today - Jesselton and Gasmata falls without resistance!
Yenen proves to be a tough nut to crack

Troops are unloading at Mersing, and the division has been ordered to attack.
We are also marching towards Clark Field - air and ground bombardment will
soon start.

The light cv's can only find a single cripple and finishes her. Moving NE looking for
more victims. The KB will refuel with the tankers tomorrow - still no sight of the enemy.
I'm afraid Wobbly got a clue about what I'm trying to do!

Sending out two heavy battleship bombardement groups to Manila and Batavia.
Not sure how this will work out, but I'll give it a try!

I just can't help but notice the massive ASW TFs people use. 15 to 25 ships, all attacking one sub...hmmm. Considering all asw capable ships attack the sub, does anyone think this is gamey or just unrealistic? I think it is both. I can't think of one instance of this...ever.

I use maybe 4 ships, just to keep it from becoming questionable.

Think "War in the Atlantic"

Hell, I take an AV or a CS, put some DDs with it, put the float planes on ASW, and have an ASW squadron follow it around.

What did Dan Gallery have when he took the U-505?

A CVE, and a half dozen modern American ASW DEs and DDs, IIRC.

I thought that one of the Matrix guys had posted that when you see a message that a ship is "unable to find" a sub, it actually meant that the ship was too far away / out of position to attack, so only some of the ships in a TF get to attack the sub. (Or am I just remembering this all wrong?)

Large convoys in the Atlantic were lucky to have a half dozen ASW escorts. Later Hunter/Killer TFs were like you mentioned, a CVE and 4-6 DDs/DEs. Nothing like what we players can commit. Just a personal observation.

If I understand it correctly, the message is there to explain (clarify)why a ship does not "physically drop DCs" in the combat animation, it does not mean it did not "roll" or whatever to see if it qualified. Every escort has the ability to attack during combat, sometimes more than once in a combat round.

It's surely true that the Allies didn't perform massive ASW missions early in the war. They didn't have the training and resources to do so.
A house rule limiting asw groups is popssible:

Max 5 ships in 41 - 8 in 42 - 12 in 43 - 15 in 44 - 20 in 45.

I didn't bombard Manila today, a sub sank a dd and the tf didn't get through and is heading back home!

The replacement pilots that are swamping my elite Betty, Nell and Zero sqd's is a menace!
All reserve ac that are left behind when a Daitai transfers from one base to another, receives repacement pilots - even though
'Dont accept replacement' is turned on.

Already I got several units with crap pilots - the thing I hated most about UV has found a way into WitP!
I told Wobbly that this is a potential restart bug, at least for me. It's soooooo annoying, and there's nothing I can do to help it.
Placed a thread on the support forum!

This was an eventful turn indeed!

Malaysia and the PI

Mersing falls and a sub torpedoes and sinks a IJN destroyer not far from Lingayen! This was the bombardment group
heading for Manila - and it cancelled the run. Perhaps just as well

A few air strikes takes off against Clark Field and a sqd of Val's join in - and 2 were lost. (A mistake, since these guys
are not intended for ground attack.)

Dutch East Indies and Borneo

Dutch bombers are now hitting Davao at night, and successfully destroyed a Betty on the ground!

The bombardment of Batavia reaped little reward - a transport in port was hit. One of the escorting dd's caught a shell that
produced 25 sys damage.

A surface tf sinks 4 PT boats of Tarakan without damage to themselves!
The light cv's hit a single transport and left it a burning hulk.

but it was the appearence of Wobbly's cv(s) between Truk, Palau and New Guinea that really spiced up the turn!!!
I have no idea how he managed to sneak in between Rabaul, Kwajalein and Truk! Hm, a bit magic and luck usually
goes hand in hand.

2 dive bomber strikes against a troop convoy heading for Kendari causes a lot of carnage! (The South Seas Detachment is aboard)
8 ships or so receives medium to heavy damage, even though non of them sinks - yet.

A series of measures were put into effect;

1. The convoy is ordered to disperse, the troop transports gets an pc escort each and are heading for friendly ports
The damaged escorts are ordered to head towards the enemy cv(s).
2. Other tf's in the area are either disbanded or turned away from the immediate threat.
3. More Mavis search planes are transferred to Palau and Truk.
4. Zero's and Nells/Betties are moved to Davao, Palau and Truk. There is also a presence at Rabaul and Kendari.
The light carriers are ordered to move NE towards Tarakan - I do not wish to put them into the fight unless the conditions are favourable.
5. Subs are ordered to take up blocking positions ahead and behind the enemy tf.

(see attached map)

This is a bold move by Wobbly - it will disrupt some shipping, but it will also place his cv(s) in danger! There are a lot of things that can happen now,
and as the Buffalo's and Devastator's are useless, he is depending on his deadly divebombers. If I only can get some Zero's to maul those.....
The KB is currently refueling south of Hawaii, and will not be ordered east until their original mission has been completed.

Tension builds as the Lexington tf moves NW between Truk and New Guinea!!
The cunning little kiwi is really trying to make life miserable for me....

My plan is working - for now! 2 damaged escorts were the only ships sunk by the cv's
today. Search planes identified the Lady Lex, and 2 strikes were launched from Palau!
The Nells were attacking at long range, escorted by Zero's - they failed to score any hits,
but 5 Buffalo's were lost.

More Zero's and torpedo bombers have been put in place, and I think All will keep away from Palau.
I've put together Operation Shogun! (see map)
The light carriers will meet with a surface tf that is to provide a heavy eascort. It will also refuel
from a replenishment tf just west of Kendari. More Zero's, Val's and Kate's are being transferred
to the carriers - and I'll be able to mount as many as 120!! ac. Since I got quality on my side and
is fighting on home turf, I hope to show the audacious kiwi a thing or two! <evil laughter!>

Other news from the front;

Land, sea & air

Burma

Tavoy falls and the base force retreats towards Rangoon!
(I'm trying to hatch out a plan that involves India...why go to such extreme pains to secure the
south Pacific when India is ripe for the picking? The Imperial Navy will clense the Indian Ocean, and
the brunt of the forces now engaged in the occupation of PI, Burma, Malaysia and the Dutch West Indies,
should enable me to capture important bases and secure more oil and resources for the Empire!)

Malaysia

Dutch torpedo bombers based at Singapore hits my bombardment group led by the Kongo!
I swallow a few times as the torpedoes barely miss the big ships - but an unfortunate destroyer
catches 2 and sinks in minutes!

Borneo

Pontianak also falls, but this was a close one! An ABDA force containing several cruisers and destroyers
attacked the transports and sank a msw and a destroyer. Fortunatly the transports had unloaded their
troops and were able to hide in the darkness of the night.

(Nells managed to severely damage one of the offending destroyers next morning)

China

Yenen is receiving and awaiting further reinforcements - the final assault will commence shortly.

Philippines

San Marcelino was heavily bombarded by a battleship tf! A fresh division is currently landing at Lingayen,
and the div at Hong Kong is currently loading.

Wobbly sends the remainder of his PT boats to Legaspi to hit the supply convoy that's unloading there!
I also got a surface group there as cover, and they sink 3 of the little pests without losses.

Rain, t-storms and zero visibility - that's what most of the central Pacific looks like today
Not a sign of the cv's - so I have to stick to my plan!

Only a few things worth mentioning today;

The uber deadly asw force outside PH looses one of their own and takes a hit themselves.
Sub will be fine!

A mid ocean intercept not far from Wake may get Wobbly's attention - as it is the KB bb
escort that connects.

Johore Bharu is invaded and hopefully I can cut of Singapore soon.
An air raid succeeds in destroying some of the ac left there. Moving in base forces to most of the bases
in Malaysia now, and should soon be safe from the bothersome Blenheims.

2 armored units are pushed out of Clark Field - I've not learned to use the 'follow this unit' button yet
I am now...

PzB;

Very good AAR. I have a suggestion while it is still early. How about a VERY brief day by day (or week by week) summary of major events at the top of the thread that you can edit as time goes by....like:

12/7/41
Amphibious invasions of:
Wake Island
Guam
Tarawa
Rabaul
Kuching
Khota Baru
Naga
Batan Island
Vigan
Legaspi
Aparri
Davao
Jolo
Lingayen
Kuantan

Wake falls 1877 captured

12-8-41

SS KVII reported destroyed in South China Sea

etc etc

Perhaps a running ship tally?? Anyway just an idea. Maybe even a map getting more red as Japs take territory?

Thx for the input Mandrake
Your idea is according to what I've been trying to move towards! I'm writing a short precise at the beginning of each
post that summarizes the most important happenings.

The problem is that less and less invasions takes place, and it's time consuming to create headlines for single events,
so I'm trying to put focus on the most important tings.

It's a good idea to present tallies, perhaps I can do it at the end of each month. Posting a huuge map each day would
also exceed capacity - but again, a montly sit rep could be the solution.

Appreciate all comments and suggestions - I still got a lot to learn about WitP, so pls fill in my blancs! I'm posting questions
as we go!

What do you readers think about todays approach? I will only post the major happenings and don't paste in the full aar text!
I will not always have time for this, but it could be a good change from the long text posts.

Still only in week 2, and I'm actually quite pleased with the rapid conquests in China, Malaya, Borneo and in the Philippines.
Here are the most important events for 19th of December;

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 12/19/41

Air attacks

Day Air attack on Singapore by 74 bombers causes heavy damage. 19 ac reported destroyed on the ground,
only a few of the attacking ac were damaged.

Day Air attack on 15th Indian Brigade based at Alor Star by 76 bombers. 89 casualties and 2 guns were the
damage estimate. No losses to the attackers.

Dutch bombers fly 34 bomber sorties against a surface tf just east of Balikpapaan. No hits were scored
and 2 bombers were shot down and another 5 damaged.

Another US carrier appears just SE of Shortland and launches 30 divebombers against a fast transport tf
about to unload. 4 ships are hit, one ml is in serious trouble. 173 casualties were reported. The attackers
didn't suffer any losses.

(The ft actually refused to unload at Shortland, and stayed in the same hex for 2 days. Yesterday I changed
it into a normal transport tf, and it moved in - but too late! Is this a bug? I've had problems with fast transports
before.)

Surface action

SS KXV hits AP Seizan Maru with a torpedo NW of Miri. 30 Casualties reported.
Ship i carrying a construction unit bound for Borneo. Will stay with the convoy.

The transport Dos Hermanos is tracked down and destroyed by the KB's battleship escort
that is now acting as surface raiders. At 20-24000 yards heavy shells slammed into the
unfortunate ship and left her a burning hulk. This took place not far from Wake Isl.

No sight of the Lexington - so Shogun is still on. 8 Val's landed on a cve and are moving east,
there may be a clash tomorrow if Wobbly hasn't turned his cv around....

The KB can't find anything to destroy Is the enemy tracking us?
I don't give up and fly after the US cv's that have been sighted between Shortland and Truk.
They're too far away, and I'm going to stick to my original plan. Having the worlds most powerful
cv tf in the area must be a terrible headache for the Allied Supreme Command

Land combat

Chinese troops moved into hex 47,35 north of Changsa and attempted to cut the railroad
connection. 13000 Japanese troops attacked the intruders and sent them running. 114 Japanese
and 221 Chinese causalties were reported.

A last bombardment attack took place at Yenen in northern China! 360 Chinese casualties.
Tomorrow there will be a deliberate attack. 120000 men will participate, and it is expected that
the base will fall. Most of the troops will then march south to clear the railroad south of Changsa.

Cotabato just north of Dava in the PI, was captured and the garrison retreated north.

The first deliberate attack at Johore Bahru in Malaya met with heavy resistance and suffered 674 casualties.
Only 180 Allied troops were incapacitated, but the forts were reduced from size 5 to 4.
1 full division + support troops are marching from Mersing, and will join the fight in a few days.

When Johore has been secured, the troops will rest and wait for the northern group to mop up.
2 full divisions and 3 bde's + support units will attack at Alor Star in about one week.

-------------end of combat report--------------

I wish to post a picture of one of my 'crack' Zero Daitai's - former crack Zero Daitai is probably more
precise. After moving the group, new pilots were drawn from the pools to man the reserve ac, and I
now got a partially ruined Daitai

I'm actually hesistant about moving a much needed Betty group, cause it has 27 ready ac, 9 in reserve
and only 27 pilots. 9 greenhorns will immediately be assigned to te reserve ac when I move it!!

Does anyone know a way around this terrible dilemma?

Yes...an apparent solution to your problem can be found in the strategy devised by Milo Minderbender in Catch 22. When the Germans wished to bomb an American airbase in Italy, Minderbender convinced them it would be more efficient to hire American planes to do the bombing for them, thereby avoiding the cost of fuel and ordinance, reducing the burden on their supply system and, of course, the risk to their pilots. Conversely, the Americans would likely surprise the AA gunners, greatly reducing ammo expenditure while maintaing a high state of readiness among the air crews. And there was the added bonus of the cash, which could be used to improve creature comforts at the base.

Park all of the reserve aircraft together (away from barracks, etc) then hire one of your own groups to hit the parked reserve aircraft...et voila

BTW...cool write up! Great fun to read. As for a serious answer...do you have an experienced Betty group that is pilot rich, but plane poor? You could move the pilot rich group and merge them?

Guess I have to do the best out of the problem with excessive pilot replacements.
This is my plan; Move all sqd's with a lot of reserve ac and receive green replacement pilots. As I got a lot of good pilots, I can live with this for now - especially
since the enemy is still weak! The rookies will all be trained sometime in mid 42, and when the going gets though I'll have a reasonably big reserve of pilots and will be
better able to control the reinforcements that do end up in the pool.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 12/20/41

Land

China

The attack at Yenen was carried out - but didn't not achieve initial success!
108972 troops attacked a garrison consisting of 44800 Chinese troops and only
achieved a 1-1 odds. Attackers lost 953 casualties while the defenders lost 585.
Defending force 44858 troops, 325 guns, 0 vehicles

A shock attack has been ordered for tomorrow as the high command is growing impatient
and demands results. The oil and resources at Yenen are needed to fuel the war machine.

Malaya

Another attack at Johore Bahru reduced the forts from lvl 4 to 3.
21500 troops attacked the 8500 strong garrison and lost 366 to 55 casualties.
Another attack has been ordered and reinforcements from Mersing will arrive in a day or two.

Air

Hudsons attacked the cl Natori off the northern end of New Guinea and scored a hit - but the bomb failed to inflict damage.

Sea

Balikpapan was hit by a bombardment tf made up of cruisers and destroyers.
7 ac reported destroyed and 3 transports + 1 destroyer were hit and damaged in port.
170 casualties reported, including 7 guns and 4 vehicles.

Situation Report

The enemy carriers operating east and south east of New Guinea were not spotted, but more search planes
have been transferred into the area. Zero's and bombers are now in place at Davao, Palau, Truk and Rabaul.
My light carriers will proceed towards Truk - hugging the east coast of NG. A small tf made up of the cruiser
Natori and a destroyer will scout ahead of the carriers.

This is a cat and mouse game, and I'll play

Subs operating between Hawaii and the US West Coast operates Glen search planes and spotted a few tf's today.
I want to bag something in this area and spread as much uncertainty as possible - so the KB will remain in the area.

The ships that made up the transport tf that was hit south of Palau, have now reached port and unloaded 90% of the
troops they were carrying. I'm happy that the elite South Seas Detachment wasn't lost altogether. One of the transports
actually sank at anchor today at Ponape, but the troops managed to evacuate just in time.

Hm, who is the hunter and who's the hunted - that's actually a pretty good question right now.....guess we'll find out soon

Had to go out of town for a few days, so here is an update for the last 2 turns!

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 12/21-22/41

Land

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Malaya

Another deliberate attack at Johore Bahru fails to reduce the forts (3).
The 2 attacking bde's were ordered to rest the next day, as full division will arrive
and help defeat the defending garrison.

351 IJa casualties reported Guns lost 9
142 Allies casualties reported Guns lost 7

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

China

Yenen was captured!!
A Japanese Shock attack finally achieved a 2-1 odds and added the resource and industry rich base
to the glorious Japanese Empire.

107661 IJA troops, 1209 guns, 12 vehicles shock attacked 43268 Chinese troops, 311 guns, 0 vehicles
Japanese assault odds: 2 to 1 (fort level 0) - Yenen base is captured!!!
Japanese ground losses: 1967 casualties reported Guns lost 41 Vehicles lost 3
Allied ground losses: 639 casualties reported Guns lost 8

15600 Chinese troops attacked at Pakhoi, but were repulsed by the 8300 IJA defenders!
332 to 110 casualties were suffered.

Bombardment attacks finding place in Nanning, have to eject the Chinese intruders soon

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Philippines

Ground combat at Clark Field

A Jap bde, 15000 men strong, advanced into Clark field and was repulsed by the 21000 men strong allied garrison.
604 Japanese casualties and 27 guns were lost to 272 allied ones including 12 guns.

(Another failure from my part to coordinate the forces that are advancing towards Clark Field from many different bases.
I find it difficult to order all troops to move in together.)

The bde suffered heavy disruption and will now rest and prepare for the final assault on Bataan in a few months.

Miri invaded and occupied without resistance

Air

23 bombers with escorts attacked a PI division at Clark Field.
32 casualties reported. 2 escorting Nate's lost while 3 Allied fighters were damaged.

2 Hudson bombers were lost in failed attacks on heavy IJN surface units of Kendari.

Fighters from Clark Field strafs and bombs transports of Lingayen and the PI island.
Minor damage on 2 transports.

6 Betties unsuccessfully tried to torpedo the cruisers Marblehead and De Ruyter of Waingapu.
All bombers received damage, but none were lost.

Situation Report

No sign of Wobbly's cv's - the weather is still very bad
The light cv's have been ordered to return to Kendari and continue their hunt for allied ships in the area.
It is suspected that the enemy wants to lure us away on a ghost chase.

If I were Wobbly, I would have merged the 2 cv's and headed up the slot between Oz and NG in an attempt to catch
the Japs off guard.

The KB will continue to harass the shipping lanes - in another week or so they will start to move west again.
Perhaps a visit to New Zealand would catch the good kiwi off guard
The ocean is too big to play seek and hide, so I'll follow my own plans and don't run after enemy cv's that are most likely
to evade me anyway.

Preparing to attack Clark Field and Manila with heavy forces. If I can split up the defenders, the remaining bases should fall easier.
Alot Star will be attacked by strong forces tomorrow, the same will Johore Bahru.
The situation in China is stabilizing, and troops are marching south from Yenen towards Changsa. We will drive the communist rabble into the
hinterland!! There they can guard their dust roads and cattle all they wish....
