Uh...alter the map size settings in the generator? "Small" is default.

Yeah, that's what I suspected. Sorry, haven't played the campaign for years, but I thought it was worth a shotr.

Change the save file to a scen file, open it up in the scenario editor, and put in any map you want, along with any objectives that you want more intelligently placed. In other words, place obj hexes on important road junctions, dominant terrain features, anything that would make military sense.

More to the point, why should anyone have to? If the generator settings have been changed, are they not persistent (i.e. do they reset each time)?

Steve. (Finding the same feature.)

If you reset the map size, you might artificially change the difficulty setting of the scenario.

For example, since during an assault, the AI typically will lay a mine field from one side to another, you could be changing the number of points that the AI has to select other forces with. (I'm not sure how the computer selects this -- so, I'm speculating a bit.)

Stated differently, if the computer has 3000 points to spend, and it is forced to spend much more on buying mines because the map size is larger, then, you are really penalizing the computer by making the map larger.

Note, there is nothing wrong with that at all and it's perfectly ok if you choose to do that. Just be aware that might be taking place. Just FYI.

Making Custom Changes in A Generated/Long Campaign
By Mike ‘Warhorse’ Amos

This is a fun thing I came up with, as did others to make campaigns a little more challenging, exciting, and or historically accurate. I had never documented how it was done, nor has anyone else to my knowledge, so, here goes! I will attempt to outline the procedure in a basic way, to ease understanding of this.
A)Tools, experience needed;
1) Basic file swapping/name changing knowledge.
2) Fred Chlanda’s editor for SPWAW, available at http://freds.webprovider.com/
3) Scenario editing experience.

B) Start the campaign menu screen.
C) Pick which country you would like to start as, also the date of start, if you would like to play as a country other than that which is one of the ‘Big Six’, just pick any of the above, and proceed to the buy screen.
D) Once in this screen, if you are using one of the six, just buy as normal, if you would like to be some other country, click on the ‘Nation’ tab before buying anything, and pick which one now, and buy your forces. (Notice of course the HQ will be other than your choosing, ignore this for now).
E) Once you are done your purchases, click done, and buy your support units, using the ‘nation’ button to select the correct one. Click done when finished.
F) You can now either go ahead and deploy, if you like the map as is, or, proceed without deploying, save battle.
G) Alt-Tab out of the game to Windows explorer, locate the save game file ie. Save038.dat, in the Save folder.
H) Change the name of the file to scenxx.dat, where xx is a number in the scenario folder that is vacant, we will use scen110.dat, for instruction.
I) Place the file in the Scen folder, and re-enter SPWAW, and go to the scenario editor, open the scen110 file.
J) Now, first thing, if you want a different map, choose it from the map folder, or make your own.
K) Go to the deploy menu, if you picked another map, you will not see your forces, this is ok, bring up the HQ unit, AO, and change this to the HQ of the desired country, if you were using other than the six. Also, if you buy other nations to help, and you want to change the weapons of the second nation on your side, do it now, as Fred’s editor will only show the weapons for the ‘parent’ oob!!
L) Deploy your forces, where desired, change them, or whatever you like, then, if you want to edit the AI forces, proceed.
M) Here is where I usually just delete all the enemy forces, and start from scratch, if you aren’t comfortable with this, leave them, and just change them around, or add more.
N) If you delete all the forces, including the HQ, exit the buy menu, and save the game, reload and return to the buy screen for the AI forces, this will rebuy the HQ unit.
O) Buy the force for the enemy, change the battle stance, ie advance, assault defend, etc. and any other changes, basically you are building a scenario, be creative, it’s YOUR campaign!! If you want reinforcements for the AI, or anything else, just do it.
P) After buying the forces for the AI, you can either deploy them for the AI, or hit auto deploy, or, if you are lucky, save now, send to a friend, and let them set the AI forces up, and send back to you!!
Q) When finished for this section, save the game in the 110 slot, or whichever you are using, and Alt-Tab back to Explorer, rename the scen110.dat to save038.dat, and put back into the save folder.
R) Now is when you will need Fred’s editor, open his program, and open the save file, first thing to do is make sure your country in ‘edit game data’, is the correct oob number, if not, change it to the right one, this will ensure the correct obj. flags are used. Also now you can change the Experience and Morale levels, and any other data very easily . You can also make mass changes here in amounts of men, suppression, or numerous other things here. When done with all your changes, save the game, overwriting when it prompts you.
S) VERY IMPORTANT!! Make sure you have done everything now, that you wanted, you may NOT reenter the scenario and edit once you start the particular battle, if you do, it will screw up the turn, and the scoring, among other things!! So make sure before you even open the save game in the game, that you are satisfied, if not, go back and change whatever it is now!!
T) All done, well, just load the save as normal, and enjoy!! This is great for Axis Minors campaigns, or anyone, really, the upgrades and everything will work fine, never had a problem, unless of course, I went in DURING a battle and changed something!!!

This is my first attempt at documenting this, so I’m sorry if I left something out, I think I have it all here, experiment, and soon enough, depending on your preferences, you can do this procedure in a half hour or less! Have fun folks, you will most likely never let the AI pick it’s own again, I don’t!!

I, for one, want to say "Thank You" for that. Most informative, and potentially very useful! :)
