Hi I am looking at getting a 19" LCD that has a native resolution of 1280 x 1024 but WITP and UV are 1024 x 768 only. So will the picture be fuzzy then? I really won't buy the monitor if these games aren't clear on the screen.

Thanks.

1280x1024 is not a *normal* resolution so it will not generally look good.

640x480, 800x600, 1280x960, 1600x1200 all maintain a standard 1 1/3 to 1 aspect ratio so jumping between these modes generally looks ok as the distortion or stretch effect is not there.

This does not mean that small fonts are very readable, it just means the stretch doesn't make it even worse.

Most of the panels are designed to run at a single fixed resolution and do not work well at any other display level. You will get fuzzy + stretched which is worse then just fuzzy.

Games still = CRT, Business = LCD

1280x1024 is a 'normal' screen resolution. The series goes like this for LCD displays 1024x768 for 15 inch screens, then 1280x1024 for 17 to 19 inch screens and then 1600x 1200 for 20 or 21 inch screens. The problem lies with the fixed screen resolution where games have been designed with a different fixed resolution. This might be OK for a CRT but on a LCD with a different resolution the image quality will be degraded. The solution is in the hands of the game developers who should have multiple resolution choices in the game.
The problem might get worse as LCD is taking over from CRT rapidly. Stick with a CRT if you don't mind the weight and size.

I have found the LCDs to be much better on the eyse than CRTs, and a good LCD like a Viewsonic, we have 5 in the house,(7 desktops, 3 laptops, 5 adults who never grew up ),
seems to run everything crisply, and you can set the resolution down if you wish, on the VS at leaset.

Most have the resolution they are best in, but will still change, a friend of mine uses a 19" LCD in 640x480 mode, go figure.

The main reasons for the best case resolutions is on a 19" monitor 1024 x 768 is rather large.

In the past I have taken my software in to run on a laptop to insure it would work, now COMP USA and those folks can be picky, but a mom and pop style store will normally let you try, the monitor may caost a few bucks more from them but you will know.

Good Luck

In the case of War in the Pacific and UV, you can run them in a window with the command line switch -w. I run them this way. While it's an unsupported mode officially, I have no problem with it and it makes things crystal clear on my 1280x1024 19" LCD (I have a BenQ model).

With high quality monitor you'll get excellent picture. I have Eizo FlexScan L767 19" LCD with native rez 1280x1024 at work (I am currently looking at it while I write this) and WITP (in full screen mode) looks brilliant on it.

I was sceptic at first as well, but not anymore. YMMV, though

For faster more action-packed games I guess CRT monitors are still better choice, but I rarely play those anymore.

The new LCDs have faster refresh rates, I can play DOOM3 on the 17" we have with no problems.

The older ones were slow on that and had a flicker, but most today are fine.
