Hi everyone...

Nobody is likely to remember me because I didn't make many posts, but I played a lot of UV (and PacWar and Carrier War, for that matter) and was on these boards during the early days of UV. I just love these types of games and can't wait to play WITP.

What I am wondering, though, is... is it ready to play yet? I bought UV like the day it came out and suffered through months of frustration while I waited for patches to fix things that I thought made the game pretty unplayable. Of course, Matirix is great and fixed those problems fairly quickly, by my long history with these types of games and eagerness to play it made the wait almost unbearable.

So my question is, is WITP ready to play yet or is it really messed up like UV was at first. I've waited a while to let them patch this and see that they are on 1.21 now. So is it ready yet? Or should I wait for the next patch and ask again?

This isn't a flame of any kind, I love Matrix and think Gary Grigsby is one of the only real game designers in the industry. In fact, it's my trust in Matrix to get the game into good shape that is making me take this course this time around, I don't think I could bare the stress of having WITP on my hard drive but not wanting to play it until the next patch comes out, haha.

I'm sure there are many things people consider issues, what I am asking is... "Is the general consensous that the game is in a playable state at version 1.21 or are there still serious issues comperable to the earliest versions of UV"?

Thanks guys, these are some of the best forums around!

I find it very playable...just depends on what you want it to be.

Very playable. Some quirks and rough edges, but very stable and playable.

You need to go look on the bug or support forum. ITs quite clear that certain combinations of hardware and software make the game unplayable ie CTD, Lock up etc.
Lots of sound, codec and driver issues asa well as a 772 error with I think WIN98.

Some folks also have a problem with the size of the patch that must be downloaded.

I have been fortunate in that I have had no issues as above but Im running on a machine optimized for FPS/FLight SIMs.

If your machine is up to then you get into gameplay issues. You need to look at the the wish list of stuff that folks want - readable font, filters, etc. IF you are a UV vet (I am not) some of these will make more sense than they did to me.

Far better than UV, which IMHO has way too much gamey stuff possible. WitP also has some gamey issues, but none of them really seems to dominate play, as the scope of the game is so much bigger. With UV I never really had the feeling I was watching history unfold. With WitP I do....so far. Definitely worth the time and money, even with its warts. For certain the most fun I've ever had sitting at my desk (well, except for that one time with Mrs. irrelevant....)

I am an old time Pac Warrior following that game since the days of the Genie bullitin boards and I love this game. I never played UV so I am not familiar with the problems they had thier. I have not had any problems running this game on XP. I have only played the AI and have yet to encounter anything weird.

I think it is worth diving into now to learn the system for when most of the major bugs are ironed out you will be ready for some serious PBEM.

These really are some of the best game industry forums around. If it were anything like UV 1.0 the UV crowd would have said so... So now I can go down the street to the store and spend the whole weekend playing WITP, woo hoo!!! I just didn't want to have it and have it be in the kind of shape UV was prior to the 2.0 series of patches. It sounds like WITP is in good shape already.

Thanks for all your posts, for my first game I think I'll do my "all out war on transports" thing and see how things work out. I love naval combat:-)

Isn't it only available through Digital River? Or are you near Indianapolis (GenCon)?

If you have cable or DSL, just download it and get the backup disc. If you are stuck with 56K, order it and wait for the disc (pray alot to the Matrix gods). Took 12 days to get mine.

If you love details and monster games, this is it. The game rocks (once you turn off combat animation and your stupid coastwatchers stop drinking on the job)!

It has its problems, of course, but I have yet to run into anything I would call a show stopper. It will depend on what aspects of wargaming you find appealing as to the degree of irritation you will get from the glitches and design issues in the game. If you are looking for a "builder" game, this ain't it. If you are looking for a very detailed operational game, this is probably your ticket...
