Has anyone started workign on a "Final Countdown" Version of Scneario 15/16? It owudl be interesting. You have no support ships, no replacement A/C, no replacement Sea Chickes (Sea Sparrows), no ammo for the CIWS (Close in weapons System). They woudl have plenty of Fuel, and should be able to get provisions, but Ordnace for teh planes and such would be limited to what is onbaord. At least for a certain time as it woudl take time to manufacture and install the new bomb shackles to the bombs. Just wonder how many WW2 Aircraft would fit on a Nimitz class carrier? Also the E2's would work ok until the radar broke.

You coudl make up a nice RE-fit for it in 1942 or 43 for a year, to add Lots of 40 mm guns and such.

What do you think.

Still.... a Nimitz bristling with 40mms, 20mms, and about 30 5"/38s. Uber Carrier!

i think that revearse eng a sidewinder or a sparrow could be done then...ofcourse the CAG's (can't remember his name) PC in his bunkroom would have more computing power that EVERYTHING in 1941. eitherway, i'm sure that Kurt could sink every ship in the japanese fleet with what he had, i'm sure that someone knows for sure but i read that a Nimtz carrier could carry on Ops for 1 month if needed without resupply.

There was an old science fiction story "Eagle among the sparrows" about a guy who got time warped, with his supersonic fighter, to World War I. He couldn't use his missles because the enemy fighters had too little metal for a radar lock and too small engines for a heat lock.

He eventually just flew around at mach 2.5 knowking them out of the sky with his sonic booms as I recall.

Fuel: Is it true (it was in the short story) that jets, as opposed to WWII Aircraft, can run on fairly low grade kerosene like stuff. So the Nimitz mght be able to get "jet fuel" in the past.

you know as silly as this sounds, i never thought about that

as for the jets, i think if the need came up for something, that they would find a way. i always thought that jet fuel was pretty refined. something to do with jet engines and explosions

Yep, thats pretty much the humor ... a low level pass over the CV with full burners would probably write off every plane on the deck. No ammo required at all.

Pretty much 1 Harpoon per ship ... hardly sporting ...

Don't forget them tasty Mk 48 ADCAP's from the Vikings too

Just how many Mavericks does a Nimitz carry?

one interesting thing though, i remember back when the Iowa's were active in the 80's, (when was the stark?? maybe it was the faulklins) , a navy person was saying that they were impervious to missles like the silkworm and exocete because those missles were designed for modern, thin skined ships.

I suspect there can be only one Maverick per ship. And one Goose, one Ice Man ....

I don't think you woudl be reverse engineering much. Yes they had electronics but not solid state stuff. You woudl be able to do a lot of damage to the Japanese but you coudl also change the load out to the load after they visited Indian Island for offload, and no Nukes. The Biggest problem woudl be parts. The palnes woudl not have them and Machineing skill and technology was not up to the task.

Just thinking it would be an interesting twist. Most of the Carrier Jets woudl be One Carrier operable only as well. Most of the runways in the world woudl not handle the F-14 or a loaded A-6 landing. The idea of a Nimitz class carrier being able to re-supply woudl be plausable, but for a game balance (I knwo laugh) standpoint, if it was a One Load unit, with out in effect Down grading it, in the yards. It would be nearly impossible to sink this carrier but, you coudl take out it's air compliment.

Oh yeah, and you definitely do your strike at night. Maybe one Maverick per CV and save the harpoons for the BBs (one each).

The sight of a sea skimmer coming in at 15 feet and mach 4 at night should be quite a surprise.

Hellos,

There is currently a harpoon (paper) game underway depicting this particular scenario over on a yahoo forum (A willing foe).

now that you mention it, some guy on the Iowa told me that too when it was touring ports and open to the public.

Use _only_ Mavericks. They can go right through the decks of the IJ CVs I suspect. One per ship.

For the BBs (OK, so I am a sadist) you can pick with extreme precision where you hit them. Use one Maverick per BB to take out the rudder and screws.
Then just leave them there. (but hit anything that tries to tow them).

Lets get serious here ... a couple of big GBU-24's will do in any ship there is. No need to get fancy.

Sail up to the KB in broad daylight. Give them a good look at your ship next to theirs. Knock down anything they try to get airborne. Have some A/C zoom past them at mach 1.1 for sound effects. Tell them you are a "light scout carrier" and the large US carriers are just over the horizon.

Ask them to turn around and go home.

Mitsuo Fuchida would probably become a born again Christian right then and there, rather than having to wait 10 years

The stunt with the ".45 caliber nuclear sidearm" is hilarious.
