I was able to get some aviation support at Port Moresby. After that I send 7 squadrons of Wirraway's to Port Moresby's airfield with 16 aircraft each and they were at 100% with an average experience of 60.

2 turn later I had only 8 aircraft of the 7 squadrons left from a total of 112 airplanes. They were able to kill 6 zero's and 3 Betty's.

It was a great day for the Australian air force

That is the best Wirraway story I have ever heard As they gain experience (if they survive) they are useful in a ground attack role or in naval aattck role against poorly defended TF's (without CAP of course). Against even a mediocre zero pilot they are "Blowawys" instead of "Wirraways"

They can also be used as a bluff to make a base air defences seem more robust (they show up as fighters on recon reports). As you have discovered...dont try anything more than bluffing

Might as well spot your opponent a few dozen points rather than using those pieces of ****.

They are quite possibly the most useless plane in the game. Its a shame you cant upgrade them to Hurricanes or P-39's

You can use those plane for a campfire.... probably the only way to run hot for the Wirraway's

I use them as Dive bombers for atacking Ships or Ground targets, not as fighters, and I asigne escorts to operate with them, in this capacity they work just fine, in fact they tend to get better bomb hits than some other types, in this early time frame.

Think of them as light bombers, not fighters

Yes, those UV days......I use them Like Patton's Fake 3rd Army of blow up's to lead the Germans into believing that the real invasion is at Pas deCalais.......... Seriously, I always check the Manuvarability rating of my aircraft to see if they can compete with the Zero's.....happy hunting.

How about using them as CAP for the northern east coast Oz bases, from Cooktown down to Townsvillle. Zeros don't reach from Rabaul do they? In that role it gives the Betties something to think about while trying to make their bombing runs. That is what I did in UV but not sure how effective they are going to be in WITP.

Even against unescorted bombers they suck. I turn their replacements off so they dont suck up my pilots.

As mentioned I seem to have moderate success using them in the strike role. Light bomb load but they are hitting shipping!

Ok thanks for all the advises.

I was P... off and did a Carrier raid on Rabaul In 1 turn most of the Zero's went down and bombing the runway did the rest. So I've a little time now to train those lazy Wirraway's. And I will give them a exiting mission above Perth.

Wirraways were primarily used as trainers or fighter bombers, not fighters.

They are very useful once you're trying to counter the gazillion barges the Japanese use to run supplies locally. Other larger bombers don't consider barges worthwhile. You'll be thankful for them after you've had a few barges sink your submarines that go after them. They're just as useful as PT boats (and just as limited - once they get the BB-killer PT boat thing ironed out).

After months of recovery the Wirraway's were ready for a naval attack mission.... And here are the results.

Could you have picked a worse target then Yamato and two heavy cruisers?

In any case, I tend to get good use out of my Wirraways. You just have to learn they are not first class fighters. If I had to use them as fighters (Australia is a bit short on those in the early game), I'd consider attritional results of 6 Wirraways lost for 1 Zero over my base acceptable (but to get that the Wirraway pilots probably have to learn a few tricks first and raise their morale). In the early war I feel it's all about attrition, the Japanese cannot produce new planes and pilots at a rate anywhere near the allies (any other fighter/fb my usual rate is 1/3 in 41 and 42), so go and shoot down or damage even a few Zeroes far from their bases.

But never attack a major naval unit;-) or you'll play the Aussie version of kamikaze.

Marc aka Caran...

Ah....... no not good idea.....

Against barges yes, transports yes and light escort ships yes, fleet units no not a good idea.

I use them to suppress remote japanese bases and cut them off supply lines, where only some occasional IJN transports would go. Got me some AKs & TKs this way.

Wirraway's are pretty good in the ground support role. Send them to India where there are more close support operations to do.

Never ever fly CAP during the daylight with them.

You have to remember that the wirraway was nothing but a souped up T-6 texan training aircraft. Not really a front line plane and certainly not capable of fighting zeros. It was a two seater. The usual configuration only had two 30 cal mgs firing forward. Any use of them in an area where serious air oppositions or AA should bring massive losses.

Well, calling it a T-6 is a bit of a simplifcation. Here is a good history of the wirraway.
