Hi everyone... I did a search and could not fined anything on this, and I know that it is a simple question (I hope).
My question is... How do I make a Freeway overpass (bridge)? I downloaded arial and topo maps of my house and surroundings and am trying to create a SPWAW map using the info. I pretty much have everything except the bridge over the freeway near my house. I know the info is somewhere but I have not found it yet.

Also how do I make a wide road, like a freeway (8 lane with a median), and a 4 lane road?

Thanks

jam

since you don't seem to be getting an answer...I'll jump in here.

The answer is that there is (I don't believe) no sound way to achieve an overpass bridge option...though some of the map gurus did try to figure something out a while back.

As it stands you can "span" a gap between two higher level terrain hexes but the bridge will always be lower in terrain value...and any units attempting to go "under" the bridge will be taxed extra movement points or even be blocked. This is due to the fact that if you want an actual bridge span to show up on level land then you have to pull some map "trickery" and use certain terrain combinations to create a bridge.

Therefore you have a catch 22...you can now have a bridge on what looks to be typical dry land...but the levels will be off and you will have units expanding some extra movement points to cross the hex...because of the special terrain combos needed to create the illusion of an overpass.

Thanks for the reply.... What a bummer. Here I thought I had a silly little problem and I find out that I am almost stuck and outa luck. As for my senario as it stands right now, it would need to go both under and over the overpass as the freeway and the 4 lane road are the major roads in this area. With the freeway running nw-se and the road ne-sw sort of an X type of affair. I was all excited about creating my first map and I get stuck right outa the shoot!! lol

I think the terrain costs might not be that big a deal, but getting stuck under the bridge could be a pain. Any info on where I can find the map trickery you spoke of?

Here you go...let's say that the blank screen is all level 0 terrain...and you want to have a raised highway running east and west (x)....you leave three level one hexes where the "underpass/overpass" is to be:

xxxxx___xxxxx

Now run your north-south road (R) throught he gap:
_____R
xxxxx_R_xxxxx
_____R

Then to make the clean illusion of an underpass you will have to blank out the middle section of this road will a level 0 plain terrain hex...leaving a nice clean cut in the road:
______R
xxxxx___xxxxx
______R

Then what you can do is put in three gully hexes(G) running the same direction as the raised terrain (east and west) where the level ground is...do the gully hexes one space at a time because if you do the entire stretch you can get rough terrain as well as the gully and that throws off the clean appearance:
_____R
xxxxGGGxxxxx
_____R

Now go back and put level one (raised) terrain over one of the gully hexes:
______R
xxxxxGGxxxxx
______R

Now you are on the home stretch...using the paved or dirt road tiles...run the highway along the raised terrain going east and west. When you go over the gully hexes you will see bridge spans (B)appear over the gap:
_____R
xxxxxBBxxxxx
_____R

The north south road will "appear" to run under the bridge span. The bridge itself will be reported on a slope and at a level -2...because of the gully terrain needed to create the spans. It's the sad trade off that the game program leaves us with...but the illusion is there.

Thanks HEAPS! I will try this ASAP. Great instructions... Now only if I can follow them...hehe

Any ideas on how to make an 8 lane freeway with a median, and a 4 lane road with a chiken lane? It would be nice to have the freeway and the main road look bigger then the residential streets.

I toyed a little bit with the idea in the past too and made some "basic" map showing how it looks like with few efforts. Off course much more can be achieved when editing with Freds Editor (..as always). Ken (Orzel) already explained what can be done with the ingame editor and there´s not much to add actually.

SPWAW terrain and map data format knows only ONE level per hex. There´s no something like "in the basement" or "on the rooftop" of a building hex. You either have one or the other but NEVER both. Same goes for bridges. You can only be "on top" of a bridge. If you just need the illusion of something that looks like an overpass, then you can create a "land bridge". Check the map below how it works. I added also some basic 4 lane road constructions (two hex wide). Beside that I don´t have an idea what a "8 lane freeway with a median" or "4 lane road with a chiken lane" looks like. Keep in mind that a hex in the game is 50 yds wide and that normal roads are of the two lane type already. If you want to fit a graphic icon into a hex that looks like a 4 or 8 lane freeway, in fact you need to make new graphics.

Rename the file below to have *.zip extension so it can be opened again. No zip file allowed here.

Thanks for the info RockinHarry... I tried to "save as"/download then rename it, and also download while renaming it before I "saved as" it. Both said invalid or corupted file. I would sure like to see it though. maybe you could email it to me. I will PM you.
