What is the standard shipping (please include ship types & total force percentages by ship type) required for a division to execute seaborne invasion?

Thanks!

So much depends on the specific situation, but ... in my experience it takes a minimum of 8-10 AP's (depending on tonnage) to land a division. Ideally, you also want AG's to assist in the amphibious unloading (4-6) and a couple of AK's for the initial pile of supplies.

Of course, you don't generally want to land a division w/out a ton of support troops, so throw in some engineers and aviation mechanics and HQ personnel, plus maybe an armored regiment to back them up, and now you're talking about 20-25 AP's and 8-10 AG's.

Then you need shore bombardment, escort, ASW, air support ... sheesh. A division is a huge undertaking.

What time period in the war?

You landing *into* a fight, or just landing? (atoll rules?)

American

Late 1943-Early 44'.

Into a fight

I am interested also in how you would use LCI's and the like in the overall integration.

Thanks!

The more ships you can spread out a LCU into, the less you are hurt by having one of your landing craft sunk. Also, if you spread it out over enough transports/landing craft, you can land the entire LCU in one shot. Obviously preferable to taking several phases to land. Takes a bunch of bottoms, but that's what they are there for.

The smaller the ship the better and faster it will unload. Just throw the kitchen sink at them on every invasion.

Americans (late war) will have a full range ships for landings.

AGC *with* a Amphib HQ loaded (needs to be in hex, not in TF)

LST/LSD/LSV are your 100 bonus ships
LCVP, LCM, LCT, LSM, AG are your 75 bonus ships
AP, APD are your 50 bonus ships

LCI(M) & LCI(G) for fire suppression

Use what you have with an eye towards the bonus.

Prep your troops as much as possible so they will be fighting under the best odds.
Coordinate an air strike to ground attack the enemy troops (this effect will be felt during the battle).

Ensure you land at night! This means you will get 2 unloading phases before the combat occurs.

How do you ensure that you land at night? Do you use the retirment allowed/Patrol do not retire thing or do you just rally the ships well inside one movement to teh target the turn before?

Really depends on the situation Buck.

If you have air power, stage everything 1 hex away from the target under your CV's umbrella.

If you don't, then you need to use Retire with mission speed to time the landing.

Thanks, thats what I thought. NP, it actually makes it nice since I can then divy up those CA's to provide Landing security, and counterbattery fire.

That's just the info I was looking for Mr. Frag, but I must be clear on one additional item; should I load anything on to the LCI's?

Thanks!

They don't carry enough for this kind of fight. Use them for smaller backwater areas.

Don't confuse LCIs that carry troops with the LCI(G) and LCI(M) ships that carry nothing at all.

These are special purpose gun/mortar platforms to suppress things that will be firing at you.

When loading troops on ships, is there any specific order that helps? Just curious if ships will load tanks to LST's instead of AP's or if infantry will load to ships first on the list even if it is LST's.
