Dinah 62 too many
Oscar 62 good
Somia 45 good (how many in pool and what has been loss rate? Did you upgrade from other AC?

Helen 23 good (there are what 3 Sentai on map?)
Pete 23 whoa nellie
Sally 20 hmmm I think a few more here try for cloase to 50 per month
Hickory 15 I don't use them. They have nice load but crappy range with tabby in game
Topsy 10 I use these a lot.
Tabby 5 More

Why are you building Nates at all? You are only losing around 40 a month in very heavy fighting (calculated by noting the 700 starting pool is only down 2 planes and you are building 41 a month). Seven hundred will cover you for the rest of 1942 easily, even if you use them heavily in Burma and India (which seems hard to do with their range). The Oscar upgrade comes in after that. I don't recall how many reinforcement Nates are on the way, but I don't believe it is more than 200 planes.

Thx for the comments Mog!

I noticed a lot of details now that I spent some time looking over all my airgroups.
I agree that no more Nates will be produced Mynok, wasn't aware that I still produced that many

I got 6 Daitai's equipped with Sonias, I've lost 8 and got 199 in the pools. Another important note here is that I've actually moved 2 of the sqds
over to Kwantung Army control in exchange for the 3 Sally equipped ones that are now under Southern Area Army control.

So I now got 8 Sally Daitai's altogether!

There are 6 Betty Daitai's (2 with 9 ac) Think I've only upgraded one size 9 Nell Daitai.
(There are still 10 Nell Daitai's - where 4 are size 9)

Situation Report

A lot of bases were captured today, a quick summary:

Bataan
Sorong
Menando
Emirau Island
Wuchow
Siador
Hollandia

I took heavy casualties capturing Wuchow - and the resources were damaged, but I got it and can
now continue with my planned operations in China.

Even though I only achieved a 2-1 odds at Bataan, the forts fell and the remaining troops surrendered.
I had expected to capture more enemies - perhaps the heavy fighting has reduced their numbers?

Tomorrow will see the invasion of Balikpapan and I continue my qonquest of New Guinea.
There will be a lull in the heavy fighting now as my troops rest at Manila and Singapore. In a week or so I will
start invading Sumatra and place base forces that will provide me with aircover for the invasion of Java.

After making an inventory, the following combat formations are now in Singapore/PI:

12 divisions
4 brigades
1 regiment
7 tank regiments
8 SNLF formations

I will keep one division in Singapore and one in Manila together with a variety of supporting units.
The brigades, regiment and 2 divisions will take part in the invasion of Java and remain in the area as garrisons
in addition to reinforce Truk and Rabaul.

This leaves 8 divisions, all my tanks and the Special Navy Landing Force units for my Indian adventure!
They will rest and receive reinforcements while I come up with a plan. I'm not going to be too audacious, but I can say
that Calcutta is one of the main objectives together with Rangoon.

I'm sailing the KB on a more northerly course and join forces with the light carriers and then enjoy some R&R before
supporting the invasion of Java - and then of course, India. Another light carrier will join my arsenal in 10 days.

Air production has also been tweeked slightly, and the following changes have been made:

The 23 Petes were changed to A6M2 production, bringing the total up to 187 ac.
I kept all the 62 Dinah's - a single factory are producing them, and I got a lot of shabby Babs search planes to replace.
Will produce as many as I need before switching production.
Switched Hickory production to Tabby
Switched remaining Mavis production to Emily
Switched one factory producing Sonias to Betty

There was only one factory producing Nates - and probably why I didn't terminate production earler, I wasn't sure
whether I could do without any replacements. Well, that has been taken care of and the factory has been switched to
researching the Oscar II. I decided to skip Oscar I production, I don't have many Daitais equipping them and I prefer to
get the Oscar II into production asap!

Situation Report

No ground combat or air attacks today - generally bad weather in the SRE.
I'm re-routing the South Seas Detachment to Samiranda. Recon shows 8500 troops at Balikpapan, and I don't
have enough troops to capture the place - yet. So I'm going to cut the base off and capture the entire garrison.

Wobbly says that he's retreating into inland China - which suits me well. I can now finish my initial plan and then threaten the Burma road! NEVER give the dog a bone, it'll just take the whole hand in the end....
He also said that he had made plans for the 'mini KB' - but they came to naught as it withdrew out of sight. This was a valuable piece of information. The only threat against a 130 ac strong tf would be his carriers. As mentioned earlier, I asumed that they were currently somewhere in Oz, Coral Sea vicinity - or were heading north towards Java.

I'm putting the light carriers into port tomorrow - there they will await the brand new CVL Soho and 2 CS's.
When te KB arrives, their mission will be to act as cover for the coming invasions - and in turn be guarded by the KB which will be my peripheral escort and only intervene when dangerous situations arises or valuable targets are spotted.

The KB met with the replenishment tf today, and are now somewhere just NE of Luganville. I've ordered them to steam towards Brisbane - as short raid against the Oz coast before we head north. The hint Wob gave me makes me believe him when he says there's nothing left in the area that will oppose me.

Situation Report

Kweiling was captured without resistance today, Wobbly is really retreating into the interior. It's very difficult
to make the Chinese units surrender though.

Lost another sub today, it made an attack on a 20+ strong asw group that escorted that troop convoy I've been tailing
since I torpedoed a ship of the US West Coast a week or so ago. Put together a huge ASW group of my own, including APD's with 10 depth charges. They engaged a Dutch sub of Singapore twice, and failed to hit it.

Suggested a house rule to Wobbly that implies a limit on the number of asw vessels in 42-46.

I've now got quite a few SNLF units in Tokyo, and together with a few construction and base forces, they will accompany a cruiser squadron down into the Solomons. I want to grab as much land as possible and be a busy little bee! Perhaps I'll even to occupy Port Moresby.... Have to think about that - I should really hold all of New Guinea!

This would serve 2 purposes:
1. Create an outer perimeter far far far away from Tokyo.
2. Make the cunning Kiwi think that I'm going to try for an all out expansions southwards.

Most of my troops in Singapore needs to rest for a few weeks, but a few select units will be fast transported into Sumatra to pave the way for the
invasion of Java. The light carriers were spotted at Tawi today - wanted to top their tanks. Decided to send them all the way back to Manila.
That will keep em safe, and as I mentioned - 2 cs and a cvl will join them soon.

I find it really hard to transfer my AF around the map - it's raining or t-storms 8/10 days - it's even worse than my hometown :(

Situation Report

Weather lifts a bit and I'm able to transfer many Daitais from Japan and PI towards
Borneo, Burma and Singapore. The troops at Singapore are getting back their fighting strength, and
operations will commence against Sumatra as soon as I clear the last minefields.

In China I order 81 Sally bombers to attack Chinese industry in Chungking from Changsa. This is the first
strategic bombing attack in this scenario, and it'll be interesting to see what the results are. If I manage
to inflict enough damage, the bombers will remain in China for a while - if not, they're going to Burma.

I've been changing some Zero Daitai commanders today, want the most skilled and aggressive leaders in command.
Heavy air attacks on Java will be ordered as soon as the bases in Sumatra have been captured.
Dozens of subs are also in position to intercept Allied shipping that tries to move in the general area of Java/Sumatra.

Map over China:

Situation Report

The raid against Batavia was highly successfull, 6 enemy vessels sent to the bottom without as much as a scratch suffered
by my destroyers!

Spotted allied surface units at PM today - the KB will move towards Brisbane tomorrow with naval and port attacks ordered.
The mini KB put into Manila and disbanded there, seems like an airgroup on the escort carrier had received reinforcements and
overloaded the ships capacity. It would not have launched anymore ac, so I put a large Val group ashore and put 9 Zeros aboard
instead. Still another 6 days until a brand new cvl joins the fleet.

Tomorrow troops will land at Balikpapan and Zeros will sweep the airfields at Batavia. Around a dozen allied fighters on CAP there
according to fresh recon photos. A fast transport is also landing a SNLF unit in Sumatra.

Aviation regiments are enroute to Burma and air units will soon arrive to start pounding Rangoon.

heya PzB...

I have not much advice to give, as I'm still a bit green on the game...just wanted you to know that I'm reading carefully all and every post you write on this AAR (and also those of Wobbly in the sister-thread), and that I'm both enjoying the read and learning quite a bit about the game in the process!!!

keep the good stuff coming! :)

Situation Report

A lot of action around Balikpapan - and my ships have been hit by torpedoes, mines and patrol craft.
Tomorrow a deliberate attack will finally put an end to all my trouble!!

I've not edited out all the unsuccessfull ASW attacks that my ships made today - I never seem to hit anything, and only one odd Dutch boat has been sunk thus far compared to 13 Japanese boats.

Wobbly mentioned how the Dutch Do-24 flying boats land hit after hit on ships and subs, even in enemt ports. He said he agreed to a thead on the forums and that this wasn't realistic. I'll just throw in my vote with that one, the Dutch is a PITA in general! (Pain in the A$$ for those of you not into 4LA - that is 4 letter acronyms.-)

Jap bombers intercepted a supply convoy outside Rangoon today - Zeros and AV P40's slugged it out. 5 ac on both sides were shot down. A balanced and bloody engagement. 1 IJA bomber was also lost, but the convoy lost several ships and the remaining transports doesn't have an escort anymore.

Several transport groups are now landing troops in Sumatra - Palembang is among the targets. Will fast transport in a base force as soon as the place falls.

Mopping up operations also taking place in the Philippines, New Guinea, Borneo and New Britain.

The KB is heading north up the coast of Oz and will try to find the surface tf that was spotted outside PM yesterday.
A few ships were spotted outside Brisbane today, but a weather front prevented strikes.

Anyone find using massive ASW TFs kinda gamey? I just wince everytime I see this. I'd love a maximum TF size, and perhaps make dedicated ASW TFs available later in the war or something. That and have a decreasing returns feature on ASW counter attacks by escorts.

Hey Ron, I take it that'll be a kind of house rule for our game. Not that I mind, I don't even do it.

If you read my earlier post I stated "Suggested a house rule to Wobbly that implies a limit on the number of asw vessels in 42-46." This has also been put into effect.

Max asw ships in 42 43 44 45 46
6 10 15 20 25

The ships you see attacking subs in the last post are either surface combat tf's and not dedicated asw groups that goes looking for subs, or max size 6 asw groups. Neither hits anything, too bad one can't make house rules regarding Allied asw efficiency though

Situation Report

Balikpapan falls and Zeros, Nells and recon planes are already in place.
Unfortunately the enemy troops retreated - they will most likely wander around the jungle for quite some time to come.
19 Warhawks was a most welcome bonus, guess they were left inoperational by bombardments some way or another.

The invasion of Palembang also started:
I decided to use fast transports instead of a slow sailing troop convoy that could fall victim to air strikes, sub attacks and mines. One destroyer hit a mine and had to be scuttled while an apd suffered 20 sys damage. 2 SNLF units and a NLF unit were landed and will challenge the enemy tomorrow. More troops could be needed, but they're already being loaded.

The invasion of Java can be quite dangerous, so I'll play safe and not land heavy units until complete control of the air has been achieved and Allied air power suppressed or destroyed. Dutch torpedo bombers have earned my respect!

The KB didn't spot any ships around PM - and I'm playing it safe. I'm not sending them up north between Oz and NG, but back to Truk for some R&R. I want to keep Wobbly guessing - maybe he'll think that I've gone somewhere else.

A full division has already been sent from Manila towards Singapore. SNLF units are also being loaded at Manila to invade the remaining Allied bases like Cebu etc.

It will take another full month or so before I've conquered Java and Sumatra, but by then most of the ships, aircraft and troops should be assembled in Singapore and be ready to sail towards India!

One question to the readers: How many of my 12 divisions would it be realistic to use in the forthcoming invasion, and how big garrisons should be left behind to keep it realistic?

Situation Report

The Dutch search planes did it again They hit BOTH my msw's at Balikpapan, and they're now flaming wrecks.
In adition, a troop transport was hit - slowing her down so that 2 Dutch torp bombers could put 2 eels into her! I have to take out DEI before they
wreck my entire fleet!

The KB is now SW of Gili Gili and replensihed - they will now slip away up to Truk and leave Wobbly in the dark...I hope!

Another violent dogfight over Rangoon; 3 Zeros and 1 bomber lost while 4 Warhawks and 2 Hurricanes are shot down. A transport is sunk, another left burning while a msw is heavily damaged. An aviation regiment will soon enable me to commit more fighters and bombers.

The initial landings on Sumatra were successful, but more troops are needed. Seems like Wob is marching most of the defenders on the island to the threatened and oilrich base.
I have now ordered a full bde + an engineer regiment + a special base force unit to Palembang. When these have landed, I will try to cut off the retreat routes.

Situation Report

The fighting for Sumatra continues, and I take more causalties now than in the early part of the campaign. Wob has had more than a month to dig trenches and prepare his defenses. After landing in several different places, I'm now more aware of the actual strength in the main bases. 2 brigades and one regiment + special base forces are now heading towards Palembang and Medan. The escort is heavy and aircover strong, so hopefully casualties will not be too heavy.

I'm rather unpatient because I know that for my Indian gambit to succeed, I need to be quick! If I wait too long, Wobbly will receive enough reinforcements to bog me down - and we don't want that, do we

6 battleships are sailing from Saigon and will dock in Singapore tomorrow. I will use them to bomb Java into tiny little pieces as soon as Palembang has been captured and Zeros are in place.

The light carrier Soho set sail from Tokyo today together with 4 heavy cruisers and 4 destroyers. The carrier will go to Manila and join the 'mini KB'. Unfortunately my replensihment tf was spotted in the Coral Sea heading for Rabaul. Wob will think this is the KB - so I ordered the cv's to sail straight for Truk while the AO's backtrack for a few days to hide my intentions. (Guess they're not going to be spotted at all now:p)

A lot of bombers and Zeros were moved west today - some landed in Singapore and Manila, but the majority was sent to
Bangkok and Tavoy. This is the force that will pound Rangoon into rubble. 100 bombers and 50 Zeros at Tavoy + another 130 bomers and 30 fighters in Bangkok. Rahaeng just east of Rangoon has now a size 2 airfield and building at 53%. I will base fighters and transports here. (I'm still holding my 2 parachute regiments back as I want to save em for the show in India. Must admit that they would have been usefull in DEI though, but casualties would have been too high.)

7 op losses today - 3 of them in transfers. Weather lifted somewhat, but it was still partly cloudy in most of the Pacific between Japan and Sumatra.

Mog - you were right about the Tabby transports. They look like C47s and have a good range and load, a good ship in other words. (At least compared to the rest of the Jap transport coffins:)

Otherwise, the sub that was hit by a single depth charge a few days ago east of Hawaii finally sank. Only 27 sys damage, but 90 float damage was too much for her.

Situation Report

Little air activitiy today, the msw that got banged up by Palembang CD guns was hit by a bomb and had to be scuttled.
More troops were brought in, and the 12" !! CD guns hit another msw - must be a lot of small caliber guns as well, cause the apd that took
23 hits isn't very badly damaged.

A large convoy with cruiser escort will arrive tomorrow and land a full sized brigade, an NLF unit and a special base force unit.
In an attempt to silence the CD guns I've ordered my battlewagons to come out and return a few salvos.

I've been thinking about Java, and this is what I'll do: approx 2 divisions will land at the northern tip and simply march all over the place.
Perhaps a few smaller landings to the south in order to cut of retreat hexes, but that's about it. I'm busy moving troops from Manila towards Singapore and
invading Iloil - will bomb this place into the stoneage tomorrow as well.

Upgraded a Mavis group to Emilies today - now that's a real beauty! Have to look up some stats and compare it to the Short Sunderland.
The KB was spotted heading NE towards Rabaul while the tankers that are heading south into the Coral Sea wasn't - just as predicted Will move them a little further to the south and towards Oz. Then Wob will believe that I've sent the tankers home and not vice versa.

The KB will rest for 3-4 weeks before heading towards Singapore. By this time most of the Allied search plane bases should be overrun. I will perhaps detach a few cv's to provide support for the invasion of the Solomon Isl chain. 4 SNLF units are heading south and will be reinforced by construction and base forces. If Wob thinks I'm going to invade his precious home turf (read New Zealand) he will get jumpy

Situation Report

The day/night attacks on Rangoon and bases in DEI were successfull.

Allied Air Losses:

Air to Air 19
Ground 10
Flak 1

Japanese Air losses

Air to Air 1
Flak 7
Op losses 4

The Zero sweeps were particularily efficient and destroyed many Dutch fighters on CAP.

Wobbly denied that he had cruisers south of Java, but I spotted a bb/ca group heading NW of Darwin today.
With a little luck my naval bombers will attack them tomorrow. I reduced the number of bb's heading towards Palembang, don't want to show all my assets and at the same time destroy the oil facilities.

3 ca's and 3 dd's are now heading towarsds Truk. They will make a lot of noice and escort troop ships all over the place.
I told Wob that I hoped to land a K.O. blow, but now where - but hinted somewhat ironically that occupying New Zealand should be sufficient to force an end to hostilities Not sure whether he thinks I'm really going to land in India or expand soutwhards.

KB is passing by Kavieng today, the tankers are still unobserved in the Coral Sea

Map over todays operations in DEI:

Situation Report

Succeeded in destroying many Allied fighters today - both in the air and in the ground. My own losses were acceptable!
The ca that hit a mine was the only thing that really annoyed me, hard to avoid as I really needed to pound Palembang.

I'm marching north from Tavoy - I don't think there's a garrison in the base just south of Rangoon. Will send in a base force it that's the case.
Also moving a lot of troops from Manila towards Singapore. 3 divisions, engineers, base forces, AA and arty units among them.
The remaining forces will rest and receive replacements - but when they sail it will be directly for the front. Don't want to gather everything in Singapore, that
would make my intentions obvious.

More troops for Sumatra are about to land at Madang - in addition to yet a convoy for Palembang carrying another brigade, an aviation regiment + a special base force unit.
Will fly in ac as soon as the place is occupied - got 460 ac in Singapore while the size of the airfields is only 7. That's why the strikes are going out in dribs and drabs.

I lost the Allied ships sighted SW of Java - not sure what I can expect, the Indian Ocean is a big black spot on my intel charts.
The KB is only 1 day out of Truk and will finally receive some R&R tomorrow. Tankers still in the Coral Sea - will soon sail north as well.
There are now only 16 Claudes left on the map It's a Daitai with max 27 ac and only 16 ac/pilots - not sure what to do with it. Upgrading would mean 11 greenhorns
on the roster.

Wobbly says he will be away until NEXT FRIDAY!!
This means a lull in the fighting over the next week.....

I was a little curious about the Tabby transpot ac today and looked it up:

Turned out to be an exact copy of the C-47 and the most numerous foreign ac type to be produced in Japan during the war.

"Mahatma Gandhi is said to be the originator of the saying, "Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery." Japan certainly was sincere in its flattery of the Douglas DC-3/C-47 series-sincere enough to produce license-built versions of this plane for use by the Imperial Navy as its standard personnel/cargo transport plane. The strange title of this paper refers to the odd production history of this particular plane. Designed by the American Douglas Aircraft Company, it was primarily built by Showa Airplane Co. Ltd., a very small concern, and also built in limited numbers by Nakajima Airplane Co. Ltd., Japan's largest maker of airframes and engines."

Well stolen is half done as they say... Thought this transport crate was too good to the other Jap designs of the period!

Situation Report

Wobbly claims that the air attacks on Rangoon supply dumps doesn't do a lot of damage. I say it's still early and the attacks
will continue. Seems like I've caught the AV on the ground, no less than 17 Allied ac were destroyed on the ground today.
When the AA and CAP has been suppressed, the bombers will concentrate on reducing the fighting strength of the lcu's.

With the fall of Palembang the invasion of Java is next. The units already present in Sumatra will press on to occupy the remainder
of the island. Medan and Teleokbeoeng are priority targets. Recon reported 62 fighters in Batavia? Hm, unsure what to make of this.

Damage to oil/resources at Palemband were moderate, but not serious - 80 resources and 60 oil damaged. Still plenty to go around.
Base forces are on their way and I have already dispatched 34 Oscar's to provide CAP for the base and tf's that are still unloading.

Most of Sulawesi is also in Japanese hands, and mopping up operations are already in progress. Another 27 Betties were moved to Borneo
to support the upcoming operations.

The KB finally puts into Truk and sys damage on the cv's are between 2 and 6. Not bad after 2 months at sea!
I've now had time to modify my plans: A southern diversionary attack will be launched down the Solomons chain and towards Canton Isl.
The KB will support the initial stages of this attack before sprinting north west towards the Indian Ocean.

Situation Report

Not a whole lot more to report since last turn. Wobbly is a bit annoyed as he somewhat managed to
get the AV group stuck in Rangoon while upgrading.

Torched another dozen ac on the ground today
Also got a lot of Hurries in the air and caught some Catalinas on the ground - Cebu's now getting wared up for the troops that are rushing ashore.

There are P-40's on naval attack at Batavia - not very effective though.
Most of the Allied CAP in the DEI has now been stood down. Tomorrow the new light carrier will join the 'mini KB' at Manila and sail for Singapore to support the invasion of Java.

The KB cv's have already repaired 2 sys damage already after just one day in port!

ORIGINAL: Mogami

Zero 174 good=6.4 Daitai per month need 15 more to be producing 7 Daitai per month Check Nagaski
Kate 80 excellent
Val 66 excellent
Dinah 62 too many
Oscar 62 good
Somia 45 good (how many in pool and what has been loss rate? Did you upgrade from other AC?
Nate 41 not needed. Change to Oscar I and when Oscar II becomes available factories will upgrade for free.
Lily 40 good
Betty 34 (depends on loss rates and how many Nell groups you have converted)
Jake 31 too many
Helen 23 good (there are what 3 Sentai on map?)
Pete 23 whoa nellie
Sally 20 hmmm I think a few more here try for cloase to 50 per month
Hickory 15 I don't use them. They have nice load but crappy range with tabby in game
Topsy 10 I use these a lot.
Tabby 5 More
Tina 5 good (only 1 group right?)
Emily 5 more (upgrade Mavis before mid 1942)
Glen 4 good
Mavis 4 switch to emily.

I subscribe to the "a penny saved is a penny earned" school of Japanese production, so my opinion differs a bit from Mogami's... Take it for what it's worth:

I kinda disagree on the Dinah. It is your premier recon aircraft at war start. It has the longest and fastest legs. That means it is also the one least likely to get your pilots killed. I can't tell you how many times I have heard on these boards, "intel told me x was there, but..." Remember that the success of a recon mission is very much dependent upon pilot skill. Aircraft that get pilots killed are to be avoided. Speed protects your pilots because they will be harder to shoot down. Range protects your pilots because you will be less likely to see operational losses. Converting your recon squadrons to the Dinah, building a small pool, then halting those plants is a good idea. When the Dinah II converts to the Dinah III or if the Dinah II pool gets low, you can restart production to replace your aircraft.

Definately agree on the Emily. It is a strength for Japan and you should get Emily's into all your patrol squadrons ASAP. It is a durable (for Japan) aircraft that can fly forever and it is a porcupine when attacked. Iirc, you get almost 6 more hexes range on your Emily patrols versus your Mavis. To put that in perspective, if an invasion TF is traveling 3 hexes per day, that is potentially 2 extra days of warning that you can use to prepare a welcoming committee. High skill patrol bombers will also bomb the odd AK or AP.

I halt all the Nates and let them auto-upgrade to Oscar IIa's in 1/43. I lose a year, but I have plenty of small plants I can change/upgrade to increase production of aircraft I want. Also, I already have 62 Oscar Ib's per month which, as Mogami says, is plenty. In the meantime, I am saving 70 engines and 1260 HI per month. If you want factories to produce more of an aircraft, I suggest you look at your Jake production. The 31 Jakes per month come from three factories (a 20, a 3 and an 8). You could change the "3" and the "8" to another aircraft and increase the plant size (and still probably have too many Jake's producing).

I divide/disperse most of my Pete's, Ann's and Sonia's and give them ASW missions, so I do not keep a large pool of any of them. Petes' and Sonias' short legs and Anns' fragility pretty much demand a different job for them - and killing Allied subs is well worth the commitment of aircraft. Moreover, the Ann's range becomes a plus and it's fragility is less important, so you don't have to use up Sonia's upgrading your Ann's if you use them both in an ASW role.

Keep tabs on the Oscar Ib pool. You will likely want to halt the Oscar Ib sometime between June and September 42. Your goal should be to have 0 Oscar Ib's in your pool and to be combining your Daitai to make up losses beginning in 10/42. The airgroups you get back will come in early 43 and you can use them as Mogami Method(tm) training groups.

I also agree on the Sally. The Sally is a valuable bomber late in '42 because it's armor and durability protect your pilots and it's range is good enough to be useful without being limiting. Unescorted raids are a good way to get good pilots killed and destroy morale. After a while, you have no need of a bomber that can fly further than it's escorts.

I've got a lot of seaplanes to upgrade to Jakes' - so I'll keep my production for a while yet. Will build a pool before switching to other needs. Otherwise we're pretty much in agreement!

Situation Report

Gad how I love to bombard with battleships - they really spread death and destruction!!

Another 19 Allied ac destroyed on the ground today in addition to 2 in the air. 5 Jap ac lost, mostly to op losses and flak.
The air attacks against Rangoon continues - not even bad weather keeps my bombers grounded!

Got the first partial base force ashore at Palembang with more following. A Kate Daitai with 27 ac and a full strength Zero Daitai have also been moved in to reinforce the 34 Oscar I's already in place. There's a lot of troops ashore, so I'm returning some to Singapore.

Only one small undefended Allied base left in the Philippines as Cebu falls. That should wrap it all up nicely by the last day of January 1942. I'm way ahead of schedule

In China I've moved 5 divisions towards Nanning and will start a diversion towards Kumning and the Burma road in a few weeks. The hope is to keep the Chinese in China and leave Burma alone. I also about ready to march north along the only remaining part of the railroad that's still in Chinese hands. 2 bases will have to be occupied.

The cvl Soho enters Manila and a reinforced 'Mini KB' is formed: 147 ac and 20 ships are moving towards Java to sink stragglers and shoot down the remaining Allied ac.

Large troop convoys are moving towards Singapore while more modest ones are enroute to Truk and Rabaul.
The last Claude Daitai's that are now upgrading to Zero's will move south to the Solomons together with some naval and level bombers. I'd like to invade PM - but I'll try to postpone it until I've cleared up in the Indian Ocean. (I may yet change my mind and use the KB to support a short and violent invasion.)

Situation Report

Interesting day! Medan falls and my newly rebased Kate's at Palembang immediately finds 2 transports they can sink!
3 bombers and 3 torpedo hits shows what skilled pilots that are manning these ac!

Wobbly gets a little too audacious - my search planes again spot a heavy surface group south of Kendari heading NE!?
I assume he wanted to bombard my airfields or sink a few lone transports - but it could also simply be a group passing through.
Hard to tell.... 5 Buffalos provided LRCAP - but were all shot down by my Zeros. The attacks were somewhat dissappointing as I had hoped
to score hits on several ships. Only the CA New Orleans bought it, but 3 torps could be enough to sink her if I'm lucky.

My bombers at Kendari sustained a lot of damage, and most of the planes are unserviceable and it will be difficult to follow up the attack tomorrow.
Most of my bombers at Borneo have been ordered to hit ports and airfields tomorrow. A last warming up round before the invasion begins.

That's right - I'm not wasting time! If you first got your enemy packing, keep him at it!!
4 huge tf's have been formed at Singapore. 2 are escorts/bombardment groups with 6 battleships, numerous cruisers and destroyers.
The remaining 2 are invasion tf's loading 2 full divisions, arty, AA, support and base forces for Java. One is made up of 1500 size ap's only and will
spearhead the attack.

The 'Mini KB' is moving NE of Borneo enroute to Java to support the invasion group that will head for Kragen or Soerabaja.
I need a little help from the readers on this one: How long will it take to match from Kragen and out onto the main railroad leading
south to Soerabaja and north to Tjilitjap? If this distance can be covered in 2 days, a landing on Kragen will perhaps be much less hazardous than
landing in a big port.

Don't want to jump at Batavia as I'm sure there's a welcome party in the form of huge coastal guns waiting for me there. Recon also shows 20k+ troops.
I always try to do what is least expected of me - as quickly as possible of course

Situation Report

Now this was an interesting turn! Let's take the bad news first - one of my subs were spotted yesterday in the Indian
Ocean, I forgot to move it and it was sunk today. So was a sub operating east of Hawaii in deep water. It's soooo easy, just a couple of Allied destroyers and my subs are dead! If this uber kill tendency isn't going to be tuned down, there will be no need for Allied asw any later than 1943!

My air offensive continues with raids against Rangoon, Soerabaja and Batavia. Especially happy about destroying 20 Allied ac on the ground in the attack on Batavia. 8 Martins, 5 Brewsters, 1 Falcon, 2 Hurricanes and 4 Warhawks were destroyed and 5 Hawks were shot down in the air.

All this for the loss of 2 bombers

The surface group that was attacked yesterday was spotted again - but not attacked. Wobbly said he wanted to bushwack my shipping of Ambonia. He should have sent destroyers only, much harder to spot and would have done the job anyway.

Another fast transport group is heading for Kragen - would be nice to unload my divisions at a friendly port!
Guess this will get the brooms attention!-)

The Phillippines have been liberated!! All Allied bases captured before the beginning of February 1942 - a feat that should be hard to best!

In Sumatra my fast transport tf unloaded a small detachment at Padang and was enroute back to Singapore - and suddenly 2 airstrikes are launched against my transports of Medan!!! Wobbly decides to show his hand and sends his carriers in - only to find that their strike planes fails to locate their targets. My fast transports are only miles south of the cv's - but isn't spotted *phew*. They're now racing south while I've LRCAP'ed my tranports at Medan.

The transports that had almost loaded a full regiment is provided with heavy CAP from Singapore and ordered to unload the troops at Bankha. The transport that was hit by a T.IV *grumble* is attached an escort and left at Medan. This is what the cv's will bounce at if they stay.

This is highly unlikely though - they're already in range of heavy air units put on naval attack in Singapore.

A most fortunate turn of events: Not only does I get a confirmation on the whereabouts of Wobbly's carriers - but they misuse their surprise attack! There are at least 1 carrier there, most likely 3 as I don't think he would split em up.
The 'Mini KB' is too far away to intercept, and would most likely not been a match for 3 US cv's. They should be sufficient as long as I keep em between Java and Borneo though, surrounded by friendly bombers and fighters.

Snapshot: Allied surprise appearence off Sumatra!

Situation Report

The enemy carriers withdrew, Wobbly said he was afraid the KB would pop up and hammer them. That's the good thing about giving away their position - fear of the dark!

Tomorrow the 'Mini KB' will meet with the transports heading for Java - 100k men are now on their way!
Moved more Zeros into the Singapore - Palembang - Borneo bases. They will provide strong CAP above my liberation army!

The KB carriers are repairing nicely - I got several repair ships at Truk, and sys damage is reduced each day.
Large amounts of Jake and other search planes have been moved to numerous bases from Iwo Jima and down to the Solomons. I plan to deploy a heavy search and ASW presence at all times over my newly aquired territories.

A bug was discovered today:

Yesterday Chinese night bombers hit Changsa, so I ordered my fighters to fly night CAP.

Japanese aircraft

Allied aircraft
IL-4c x 3

When the combat animation that was supposed to show Nates interecpting Il-4c bombers at night was about to appear, the came froze and crashed directly out to the desktop. This happened 3 times, and nothing helped before I switched off the combat anims. I informed Wobbly of this and asked him to do the same. Will post a bug report.

Operations in China is about to commence - and my first objective is to encircle and destroy the strong troop concentration just SE of Homan. (see map)

Then my army will march on Homan and continue north to capture the remaining railroad in China.
I've not succeeded in encircling that many Chinese units thus far. Mostly because there have been so many of them. Very difficult to 'herd' them in the right directions when they outumber you!

I will consider moving against Ichang as well before terminating operations in northern end eastern China. Forces will be moved towards the west to reinforce the units that will attempt to threaten the Burma road connection.

Situation Map: Encirclement operation in China

Situation Report

Hm, interesting.... I spot the Allied cv's some distance west of Sumatra. Doesn't seem like they're coming back though.
So I gambled correctly and captured Bankha today.

The heavy cruiser New Orleans that took 3 torpedoes a few days ago sank just a few miles north of Darwin
Darwin is NOT a safe haven - and my semi rested naval bombers were off again, without an escort this time at extreme range! They hit 2 of Al's cruisers - dunno how heavily they're damaged, but I'm whittling away Allied surface capabilities at a steady rate now.

The fast transport group was bombed today, but damage was light - didn't dare to send it back north past the cv's - and they'll now be woefully short of fuel.

Kragen was captured easily enough - 6300 fuel there Seems like it only takes 1-2 days to travel onto the main railroad from there - so my invasion convoys are heading there. Much better than to get mutilated by coastal guns and mines.

I'm a little worried about the heavy CAP over Batavia! Today search planes reported 60+ bombers!! there. This is making me paranoid - so I'm ordering another airfield attack. If this isn't enough I've now ordered a huge battleship tf to bombard Batavia and level it. (4 bb's should do nicely:) I don't need these immediately as I've decided to unload at Kragen and not Soerabaja.

In China the encirclement is complete! (see picture)
Tomorrow we'll see whether I got enough troops to destroy the cauldron. (Got ~75k troops ready - another 3-40 will arrive tomorrow.) Wobbly will not be pleased! *mohaha*
