Too bad it's not on the map. There was even an American base at Bora Bora - bet that wasn't the worst place you could end up during WW2!

Well things I think are getting worse for pearl harbor. He has most of his naval airforces over there, however that means it is not in the West were I am buliding up strength for a counter attack in his rear. At the rate I am going in picking off his ships I really don't care if I lose PH.

Hi, Is it just me? I don't see any Lawerence of Arabia or Stonewall Jackson in this game so far. It looks more like a Naval version of WWI "Over the top"
It appears the IJN has lost 1/3 of it's starting ships (not counting damaged)
just what is ging to hold the line? Every Allied CL/CA/CV returns. If they take a Japanese ship with them they win.

I could not read the score in the screen shot but I doubt Japan gets any where near a 4-1 lead in VP.

At the rate the IJN is losing shipping in the Hawaiian Islands, I'm wondering how much longer they are going to have supplies to keep attacking Pearl with.

I blew it up and it looked like the Allies are ahead by about 1600 points.

I would think that the LofA gambit would be to hit all the undefended and or lightly defended bases. Kill units and steal
supplies and fuel. Try to waylay supply taskforces. Like you said Mogami, more like WWI.

Counting points already, are you? Well do it right then. Pearl Harbor is worth 3000 victory points, which is worth more than all the sinkings I have had so far. Not to mention the extra points that come from bagging all the battleships. A couple of CVs and BBs have sunk.... boo hoo hoo.

Hi, PH is worth 3k to Japan so in order for it's capture to help auto victory Japan needs to lose fewer then 750 points in taking it. If the final result is 3k for PH plus 2k for sinking allied ships and killing material but Allies score 1251 points or more they win. (no auto victory ) Then they have till 1 Jan 1944 to reduce the score to under 3-1. )
The Allied player is not trying to win the war in 1942 he is trying not to lose it. Under no circumstance were the Allies going to have auto victory in 1943.

I went back and counted it up: the Japanese will get an automatic victory on January 1st, 1943 unless the Allies can turn back the IJA or IJN somewhere in late 1942. Now, if I can start sinking some of his carriers or battleships with my land-based bombers, it would help even more. The key is to hold the gate for the next eleven months while I go to work on other areas.

If the screen shot Zeta posted 9/27 hasn't been altered, Allied intel say 94 IJN ships sunk 1793 pts, vs. 2204 pts/69 ships worth of Allied shipping lost. Of course, Allied Intel reports usually are woeful in understating the enemy shipping losses - so I'm guessing the Allies are even or perhaps ahead in naval sunk points, despite other claims. Total score looks like 9212 Allies 7580 in that post.

Hi, So after the Allies lose the 30 points PH is worth to them they will have 9182 and Japan adding the 3k they get for PH will have 10580 ?

This strikes me not as Lawrence of Arabia but more like the Dardanelles/Gallipoli campaign. It needs to have surprise (which is lost now with all the boasting) and it needs to be done in a way that isn't a straight out attrition, because once there is a war of attrition the allies win. So like the plans for Gallipoli, captuirng PHhas to be done from the blue, once the other side has figured out that you're heading for PH/Constantiople, then the cost of achieving it becomes too high.

I think Lawrence and Stonewall would agree with that -- once the enemy knows what you're doing, he's most of the way to stopping and beating you.

Yep - assuming that the screen shot is correct. Of course, the IJN would also bag the ships in there for a few hundred points more. I think the Allied points for IJN ships sunk is low, though.

There needs to be a different version of the scenario made so the bulk of the units are in eastern Japan rather than Formosa, Hainan, and Indo-China. This way the Japanese can really get down toward PH faster. Ideally, the invasions of Hilo and Lahaina should begin within a few days. Right now a player can strike at Malay and the Phillippines quickly, but not the Pacific.

PH has to be captured for Hirohito's plan to work. He thought he "might" be able to take PH down the road without a big commitment. This is wishful thinking. You either have to commit to take it, or accept that the Allies will hold it. There will be no victory on the cheap.

Now with Hirohito's plan, the Allies have a major 10-10 forward base right in the middle of his lines. The Allied player can build up a large force here unmolested and then strike at Johnson or Midway. From here they continue on to the Marshall and beyond. The only hope for Hirohito is to deny the Allies the use of that forward base. Have the Allies use San Diego as their launching pad for invasions. It's a long way away from there to the Pacific islands.

Hi, What is your projected score for 1 Jan 1943?

I can't give you the exact score but it is in the range of 20,000 to 5,000.

Hi, Yes it is a long way from SF to PH. The Allies will need to make the trip 1 time.
It will be in mid/late 1943.
The only hope of this plan is Auto Victory before then.

The Allies are not going to do anything major before then. That is the great miscalculation the entire plan is based on. Grabbing this line that the Allies will beat themselves to death against. If Japan sat at Kwajalean the Allied player would sit at PH. When the Allied player finally moved it would be in mid/late 1943.

What impact this has on other areas is much more important. Can the Allied player still run supply and units to Australia. If so the plan is a total bust.
Losing 1/3 of the IJN to prevent something that is not going to occur makes no sense.
When the Allied player does come the IJN will be reduced by at least 1/3 making the Allied job that much easier.

The VP awarded for a base only count towards victory if they make up a portion of the required ratio. 4-1 in 43 3-1 in 44 2-1 in 45/46. Victory points mean nothing unless you have enough to win (or avoid losing) Giving the Allied player 1-1 in VP in 1942 is suicide.
Base VP do not count in this calculation (they change back and forth. Material destroyed points always count in your total)

It's too soon to tell because I have not heard if Allied player is able to run supply to Oz. If he can get 1 run of 100k supply and 100k fuel Japan is finished. After he stocks the west coast the excess airgroups can all go to OZ as well.

The Allied player should just forget PH till 1943 and instead move to secure a base for B-17 in SRA. (Ambonia or Kendari) He should be able between the RN the Dutch and USN to collect a force larger then anything the IJN can send after losing so much early on and with so many ships being repaired.

(I really wish Hirohito had played me in PBEM so I could see this plan in action.)(I do have a "Rampage" Japanese early plan but it does not involve capturing bases with the intent of keeping them.)

No, they will need to do it more than once. There is something called "supply" and "fuel" in the game. Grabbing Suva isn't going to be enough. You've got to resupply Suva and build up a force to grab the next island. This will take time.

Hi, I think you know exactly what I mean by 1 time and that I was not refering to supply convoys later.

Hi, I think you know exactly what I mean by 1 time and that I was not refering to supply convoys later.

I know that PH is a size 10 point which makes it a lot easier to go the offensive in say the Marshalls or Marianas. What does a size 4 port in the middle Pacific give the Allies but a big headache? They need a big forward port to really get busy. Before that it will be a struggle.

Hi, I don't think we are talking about the same thing.

The Allies in 1943 will use the US West Coast as a base for 1 offensive operation.
The target will be PH. After that they will use PH as a base for the next offensive.

The USN gets 6 CV in the first 7 months of the war. After that they wait another year before they get any CV lost back along with the first 3 Essex and 7 CVL. So by late 1943 no matter what Japan does the USN will have 10 CV and 7 CVL. This force will contain 1000 aircraft.

I'd just land on Midway to use as a staging base for the PH attack proper. Another 300 aircraft can deply there to help in the CAP and bomb prep for the assault and refuel all the ships. A few weeks of shooting down Japanese bombers from PH will of course take place.

This is what is going to happen. The only way to prevent it is to end the war by Auto Victory prior to it happening. And nothing here prevents the Allied player from doing parts of it sooner. (I think the USN can retake Midway prior to actually being ready to assault PH. )

If your point prediction is correct (20k to 5k) then the plan is a smashing success.

PH will likely be even stronger than Rabaul was. Can the Alllies eventually take it? Yes, but it will be very costly. They might even be able to starve the place out but that is way into the future, perhaps late 43.

Yes, they can land on Midway but it is in the middle of nowhere and the port is small. It will take time. Then they will need to take PH. By then, they are where they were historically in 1942. Next they will move on the Marshalls but they are going to be behind schedule.

Honestly, I think this "Auto Victory" system needs a little work. Taking PH, sinking all the battleships, and cutting off the US from the rest of the Pacific would have actually put some pressure on the Americans to surrender. Sinking some dutch transports, keeping the Japanese carriers intact, and putting a division on Lunga would never had caused the US to surrender in 1943.

I mean, what happens if I lose all my carriers but take California? Or knock the Commonwealth out of war but lose all my battleships? This won't cause the Allies to come to the peace table because I've suffered too many losses and can't reach some magical ratio?

Hi, In terms of sinking Japanese warships the Allied player is already way ahead of 1942 actual numbers. The geographical points only matter if they place you into that magic Auto victory ratio. If they don't they are not important. When Japan runs out of ships the US player will retake all the bases. The US player will take PH much easier then the Japanese did. He can land all his assault troops in 1 or 2 movement phases. His assaults wil be covered by more aircraft. He will bring more units.
(count the number of US Div that arrive on West Coast before Mid 1943.)

The Japanese have to inflict more damage then they sustain. They have to measure the size of the 1943 USN and whittle it down to less then or equal to the 1943 IJN.
From start to finish the Allied player that scores 1-1 in killed troops aircraft ships is winning. The Japanese will run out of material long before the Allies do.

The whole point of this forward line of bases is that it can extract points from the Allies.
If however they cost more then they yield they lose points in the long run because it is the Allied player who will score the base points in the end.

The Japanese have a massive force at start. They can sail around anywhere and inflict damage. However in 1943 it will be the USN sailing around. With a force 2 or 3 times the size of the Japanese 1941 force. What you are doing now they will do then. Only they will do it better because they have more to start with and you have less to oppose them with.

Betty Daitai are disposable forces in 1943. They fly once and whatever damage they do is all they are going to do. Then you move in a fresh Daitai. As long as you have fresh Daitai you are going to have a chance of inflicting some damage but at the same time you are going to be yielding several hundred VP per turn in lost aircraft.

Of course all this is just speculation on my part and it remains to be seen if over the course of several games employing this strategy the Japanese can attain and maintain the Auto points or if the early expense pays back later.

I get the Yamato Battleship in a few months. Can't wait to see what happens when I send her in against the Allied invasion ships!

She will get that catastrophic hit from a PT'S torpedo and blow up and sink in seconds.
