Do you mean the classic wonderful epic directed by John Wayne, or the new-supa-boring-yawning-snorting Ron Howard remake?

Sorry you found it boring
i found it much more realistic than the John wayne version, although I enjoyed the Wayne version too.
also , director was John lee Hancock, not Ron Howard.

Hi Alby:

I enjoyed it too ever since I found out the version with my boyhood hero (JW) was not quite factual. I have become fascinated with reading up on the battle from a historical point of view. A good friend of mine from Texas goes crazy every time I mention the movie and I have to confess that sometimes I egg him on.

If you have ever been there, don't forget to remove your hat when you enter it as the Alamo Guard will jump all over you!! I plan to watch it again afetr the debates.

Sorry for the mistake, since Ron Howard was the first choice for directing the movie, but he defected a long time ago.
Well, I didn't see this new version, but for the commercials I've seen it seems kinda "Rambo & friends running amok on Texas" (it menas, plenty of CRASH BOOM BANG). If it's not that way, then that's publicity's fault, but I pledge allegiance to John Wayne version (my God, how could this man direct the wonderful THE ALAMO and some years later he directed the truly awful THE GREEN BERETS?)

Love the idea of the movie, but historicly it sucks. The John Wayne version was closer to the truth but again far feched.

Think you got that backwards my friend
The John Wayne movie had very little historical accuracy.
The new one however does have alot of histocial truth.

Ron Howards dad did have a cameo in this movie, also Ron Howard was a co producer of some sort.

I heard the same thing but for the life of me, I could not see him. I assumed he had on a wig or makeup or something. The latest version is more accuarte from a historical point of view but it is hard to let go of boyhood heros even if it is not accuarte. As a kid, who did not like JW? But the true story, at least in my point of view, the early JW version was not quite correct in a lot of areas and this latest version, while not perfect either, is more historically accuarte.

But who cares? I like both.....

I've seen this show several times, and I like it a lot. What really did it for me, however, was the Mexican point of view portrayed in the movie. General Santa Anna was represented very well in my opinion. I've studied this man for a long time, and his character is much more convincing than the Santa Anna in 13 Days to Glory. He looks a lot like Santanner by the way! Also the Mexican uniforms were very accurate. The battle of San Jacinto was well-done too. I've been there when I was little, all I remember is an old cannon sitting in the middle of a field. General Castellon's (?) last moments were well done in the movie too. Makes you wish he hadn't have died in the battle.

I thought the bit with Davy Crockett at the end was a little overdone. I remember seeing something on the History Channel that showed evidence that he and a few other prisoners were shot by a Mexican firing squad after the battle. Can anyone shed any light on this?

Thanks,

Matt.

There is some evidence out there that Crockett was one of 6 or 7 defenders captured at the end of the battle and later executed.
The source states the men were set upon with swords, but died without shaming themselves.
in other words they did not cry and plead for mercy.
here is a great alamo forum and website

Alby and all, I haven't seen it yet, so I can't make any critical judgements. You guys can rail on about it as ypu please---just don't get carried away.

Truth be known, this discussion doesn't even belong here-- I'm moving it to the General Discussion area.

Haven't seen it yet myself, but I plan on buying the DVD. Always thought the Texas revolution was fascinating. I lived in San Antonio for five years when I was in elementary and Jr. High shcool and that was when the John Wayne movie was made. (Yeah, that makes me an old fart.) I got quite indoctrinated about the Alamo then and made dozens of visits to it. Texans take their history very seriously. I was born in West Tennessee in Obion county very near a place called Crockett. I know a little bit about Davy Crockett too. Tennesseeans take Davy Crockett pretty seriously also.

Although I liked the Duke's movie, I'm looking forward to a more fleshed out version of the story based on more current historical research, especially the Mexican side based on one of Santa Anna's officers. It's interesting to point out that Travis, Bowie and Crockett were basicaly "illegal aliens" in Mexico that participated in a revolt that annexed a large part of that country. Kind of ironic considering the current illegal alien problem, huh?

Just what do you mean "Dont get carried away" ????
Moving my thread is fine but why single me out??!!
apparently threads like this one about dogs are much more related to SPWAW and belong in the spwaw forum??
