How do you guys handle ship upgrades? Do you turn them all off and then control when units go back to SF or some other port with repair capability to upgrade? Or do you just leave them all to upgrade? I'm worried doing that may result in a lot of ships suddenly upgrading and being out of action for a few weeks. Thanks.

Playing Japan I haven't really played long enough into the game to have this problem.. But as Japan I plan on conducting every upgrade asap especially since a lot of them deal with ASW (for DDs) as well as AA for most other ships... Japan's ASW and AA ability is poor and every little bit will help - especially on the CVs...

That's one of my house rules. I turn off ship upgrades and rotate ships to their respective primary ports when they are a) placed into a well-stocked reserve fleet (I always maintain a reserve), b) badly damaged and require an extended stay anyway, or c) the upgrade significantly improves the survivability of the ship.

I had the same concern but, as I just entered into march/april 42, i have found that at worst your ships would be around 15% or so sys damage , so I have decided to leave it at auto upgrade, your fleets wont upgrade unless they are below 5 sys damage anyways . Just my 2 cents , but be aware this is only my first full campaign game , hehe

One small note, for the Japanese, I would pass on any upgrades to the CLs Kitikami and Oi (They reduce armament, especially all their wonderful torpedoes, because historically they converted to large APDs) and the flight deck addition to the BBs Ise and Hyuga (which lose their rear 14" turrets).

Thanks for the replies. I think I'm going to go with turning them all off and controling it myself. I'm worried too many ships will suddenly start their refits when I need them and I don't like to use ships with over 8 sys damage so I don't want to be forced to press a bunch of ships into service with 15 sys damage. Plus, I think it'll give me more control over how my ship repair points are spent by doing it myself.

Related question:
Will ANYONE "upgrade" Ise/Hyuga to, to, to...that which they upgrade to? Hybid is an understatement! I think it's nice the game gives you a chance to do some historical follys. Maybe some optinal conversions should be added for "what if" scenarios. Let's say:
1.Japs think they are winning the war and Kaga/Akagi can upgrade to PT tenders
2.Japs think they are losing the war and convert Yamato to torpedo BB (Kitikami x100)
...sky is the limit.

There are some destroyers that upgrade in February 42 I think. Check Pusan.

Is there a list anywhere that details what the upgrades are for each ship? I don't want to have my carriers in drydock for a month while they're getting new wing mirrors!!

Just in the ship class menu. For example, Farragut class have four variations I think. The original says Farragut Class, the first upgrade is listed as Farragut 4/42 (the month refit is first available), the second upgrade is Farragut 10/42, and so on.

Generally, any upgrade is a beneficial one.

I should know this, but does it matter which port you have your ships in for upgrade so long as it has repair capabilities.

Any FRIENDLY I think, as long as it has a naval shipyard. I wonder if it will work in a Japanese port?

One thing to note:
The Ise and Chitose conversions happen as long as the ships are at anchor in Osaka and there is shipbuilding resources available. It caught me off guard because I thought that the conversion would show up as a button on the ship info screen (like the other types of conversion).
I don't think that you can turn off the conversions. To stop them, keep them away from Osaka?
