Omaha Beach Scenario Question - 10/19/2004 2:18:42 PM

I'm totally new to the system. I never played KorsunPocket but a lot of other wargames. So I'm not without clue, but it seems really hard to beat that OmahaBeach scenario! I tried it like ten times, without success. The AI was even "-"! Now my question: Am I doing something wrong? I tried different strategies, but no one worked. I think I'm doing something wrong... Like with artillery, it seems I can only use it on strongpoints independently or in attacks with combined forces. Is there no way to shell enemy units without commiting your own in an attack? How the hell is it possible to reach St.Lo? I'm allready good if I get acrosss the river...
So if anyone has some advice, I'd appreciate that! Because I really love the game so far (even though I obviously suck at it)...

Omaha is quite difficult to win on points as the Americans from what I've seen (same as Cherbourg scenario, not impossible in either case).

As a beginner in BIN you'll find this a tough nut to crack as the Americans; requires a lot of movement & the ability to kill lots of German units before you can reach St Lo for the victory.

Selected artillery units & your naval guns can attack strongpoints directly. There is no mechanism to attack units directly with artillery. Consider this point... when one of the infantry regiments loses a step, its the same as a battalion becoming combat in effective. Not often artillery could pull that off by itself.

Remember "Computer -" according to SSG is not a lower AI setting, it's the fully normal AI without AI scripting which doesn't apply to BiN's scenarios in the first place.

So you're playing the AI in all its glory! As for direct arty attacks, the scale is divisional/regimental hence, I feel it would be unrealistic to call on a battery not in support of an actual larger combat organisation in contact with the enemy at this level. At the btn to platoon scale, you'd expect to see the batteries actually firing off individually within the phases comprising BiN's 24 hour long turns.

Phil,

You'll never manage to punch through head-on - try to attack in force at either the western or eastern side, but withhold the armoured division out of sight of the enemy. Then, as soon as the enemy starts concentrating his forces to hold your attack and your armour is "fuelled up", have the armour "make a dash" for St. Lo at the other side of the board. With any luck the AI will have committed most units to face your attack, leaving little resistance for your flanking move. The armour can survive a while even without supply so don't worry about keeping them in the supply zone, but if you're really lucky the AI may even withdraw some units to stop your exploiting armour which may allow your original attack to gain some ground as well.

In general, keep in mind that it's hardly ever possible for the AI to defend the whole frontline at equal strength - the clue is to keep some strong mobile units in reserve (preferrably SS divisions as the Axis, or armoured divisions as the allies), to find the weak spots or create them by making a probing attack somewhere, and to push the reserves through the hole to cut off enemy supply. It is however always a careful balance to withhold units as reserve on one hand, but at the same time make sure your own line is strong enough on the other.

Johan.

Thanks! So I'm quite happy to know that I picked a quite hard scenario. Considering the artillery, I know it wouldn't be very realistic, I just thought I ask to make sure

I actually tried it on the left and on the right flank, concentrating my forces and tried to punch through with armor. Problem is, I have to leave quite an area undefended. The AI seems to flank me really quick. AI is just really clever I think. Driving the Armored to St.Lo might be possible, but even if I won on paper, I'd rather have a nice victory... Well anyways, I keep on trying, 'till I get better. What would be a better scenario to start with? Monty's landing maybe?
