I was wondering if there is a breakdown of the statistics for each type of unit? I am loving this game and curious about specific strengths and weaknesses of the units.

Thanks

The battle system is built to allow quite a number of difference configurations for troops. Their amour level, weapon type, training level, initiative, morale and number of remaining stands all make quite a difference for how they perform on the battle field. Commander attributes such as tactical genius or heroic also have an influence.

For example, if I have an elite, heavy armoured infantry unit with 4 stands, he is going to be a killer (see Memnon in the battle of Granicus.) His elite and heavy armour will give him tremendos bonuses to both hit and defend. By having 4 stands, he will get 4 dice rolls. After losing 500 troops, he will still receive 3 dice rolls.

Compare this with Alexander who is an elite, heavy armoured cavalry unit. With 2 stands, he is still a killer and his cavalry can move faster than infrantry units. (He will also have an extremely low initiative meaning he gets to move first!) At full strength, he will also get 4 dice rolls (2 per stand), but he will only get 2 dice rolls after sustaining 500 troop losses. Head to head, Memnon will destory Alexander.

Hopefully this is the sort of thing you mean when talking about statistics and weakness/strengths for each unit.

On that point ... is it possible to ever get a Heroic Commander when replacing them between battles?

I get the rare Tactical Genius but have never seen a Heroic come up.

I am a little confused by what you said though ...

Does not a cav unit which is 2 stands only get 2 dice rolls? or do you mean because of Alexander's "tactical+heroic" he is +2 to the normal 2 dice rolls?

Thanks for the reply, Deride, and yes that does answer my question. I wasn't sure if there was some underlying base value to the different units (beneath the stands, training, and morale.) I just wanted to make sure that I understood the apples to apples of the different armies and their respective units.

Thanks again

Actually, each stand of a cavalry unit gets 2 die rolls

natural "one stand" units get one die per stand (e.g. infantry/archers)
natural "two stand" units get two die per stand (e.g. cavalry)
natural "one stand" units get four die per stand (e.g. chariots/elephants)

also, Heroic never shows up as random. only can be earned on battlefield by award.

Ah, ok ... must have read that wrong.

Last question ... do you round up or down ... ie: a cav that down 4 beads still gets 4 dice rolls?

So playing a health card is best done to bring a stand back, prior to that point it doesn't actually gain one any benefit as the 400 troops that can be lost don't actually grant any extra dice?

Mr. Frag,

First question: "Can you get heroic when replacing commanders?"

The answer is no. Heroic honors must be earned (which you can get through awards at the end of the battle.)

Second question: "Do you round up or down, i.e., a cav unit that is 4 steps down gets 4 dice rolls?"

The answer is no -- we "round up." Basically, if you 4 stands (i.e., figures), you will get a die roll for each stand -- even though a stand may only have 1 step left. So, as you have pointed out, using a health card on a unit that will bring back a stand is a good strategy because you will not receive an extra die roll when attacking/defending.

One quick correction so not to be confusing...

Infantry or other units that can have four stands at full strength get 1 die roll per stand that is still alive.
Cavalry or other units that can have two stands at full strength get 2 die rolls per stand that is still alive.
Elephants, chariots or other units that can have one stand at full strength get 4 die rolls per stand that is still alive.

So, at full strength, all units get the same maximum attack -- 400 kills (i.e., 4 steps of damage.) However, units with more stands can take much more damage while still dishing it out better.

Yes, it is rounded up (meaning, we only look at number of stands regardless as to damage on a given stand that the 'hand of God' has not taken). Indeed, it is a good strategy to use a health card on a unit that can actually recover a stand with the health. The unit get the extra die roll(s) due it. Also, if the health card recovered it to full stand strength (e.g., back to four stands for an infantry unit), the unit is also assured of gaining a level of training in the OOB screen since all partial damage to a stand is automatically recovered and the unit will no longer have missing stands to buy (and buying a stand will cause the unit to lose a level of training).

Whoa! Double reason to buy the stand back just before ending ... didn't think of that one.

Now, if only we can do something about that 3 health card limit

Yep, I save my Health Cards for the end to gain the most elite units I can.
