Hi,

just asking what you think are the main positive
and also negative aspects of the game.

also some more questions:

1. will it be available in the EU ? i don´t want to order from the US or use the download option.

2. i still use win 98. my comp is 1400mhz. intel + 512mb sdram + ati8500. are the specs good enough ?

3. how is the AI behaving ( playing some HOI - core mod - the last times and still i´m wonder about the AI. is it better in WITP ? )

4. how is the PBM play ? problems with that or similar simple like in SPWAW ?

i used to play some second front / war in russia from g. grigsby. i liked it quite much. these games have some things in common i think, so i guess WITP will suit me, too....

thanx...

imo the ai is terrible, and the pbem works GREAT... lots of challenge..

Pros -
1. Hundreds of hours of entertainment.
2. Micromanage the entire Pacific Campaign, and make Nimitz look like an Academy Midshipmen.
3. Have a favorite ace that racks up 90 kills and keep on scoring!
4. Setting up mock battles with the edittor, "1 F4U vs. 25 Nates", and watch the slaughter!
5. Lose weight because you skip meals and your metabolism is running at 4030% due to large quatinties of coffee.
6. No "kill, loot, sell" leveling system.
7. Make new enemies using the PBEM system.
8. You'll finally understand what players are saying on the boards when they post someting like, "I sent my CV TF to NG, but I didn't have any more AC. So I created a RTF in PI with a couple of AOs and DDs. I wanted to convert the P-40s at PH to SoPac, but didn't have enough PPs."

Cons -
1. Loss of sleep.
2. Loss of job.
3. Divorce papers.
4. Coffee addiction.
5. Ulcers from eating too much delivered pizza.
6. Worn down teeth from biting your fingernails as you watch the combat replay in PBEM games.

Hm. 8 pros. 6 cons. Looks like a winner.

Pros:

- You get to fight the entire pacific war from start to finish, how cool is that!
- Lots of great PBEM opponents
- Great database of almost every plane and ship that fought.
- Dedicated company that listens to the community.

Cons:

- UI that is a mess.
- Worthless autoconvoy system which makes managing logistics very tedious and not much fun. The first turn takes forever.
- Mediocre AI.

2. I'm running it without problem on a W98 (2nd edition) machine that is not as fast as what you posted, so I wouldn't expect you to have any problem.

3. I've played HOI also. Don't try to compare the two, either game wise or AI wise. Far too different from each other. Currently the WiTP AI has some ... issues ... but improvements are being made and some are included in the soon to be released 1.3 patch.

pro - great forum support by gamers & betas
- great communitiy

con - patch support ceased to exists from the publisher it seems.

reminds me of Sierra in 2003 : for N2003 the patch was ready 10 weeks before the release from sierra . papy said patch is ready.....sierra said nothing. after 10 weeks it was released....funny thing was that a beta tester had sneaked the patch weeks before...so when the patch went online all driver already had the new patch impressions

no words from matrix reminds me of the summer 2003 with N2003.

Cons: Very complex, time consuming, long

Pros: Everything else: most ambitious, and probably best wargame ever made for PCs

I'm probably one of the biggest critics of this game, and every other game I've played and or assisted with. This one more so because this is the game I've waited years for someone to attempt and I am rather passionate about it. I'm guilty of having gone a wee bit overboard in my pursuit of getting my point across, showing my dislike of a design feature, what have you.

I've just got one thing to say. I can't seem to stray too far from my box...I'm always checking my emails for PBEM turns. I can't get enough of this darned game and I can't remember when I've enjoyed a game to this degree. The level of immersion has been total. My social life is suffering, I stay up too late, the pizza joint I frequent often corrects my orders I've called so often because I have not gone out and bought many groceries in a while. ("Sure ya don't want wings with that?" or "What, no double cheese?")

The community is also first rate, adding more value and satisfaction to the overall experience. Can't go wrong with this puppy.

On that note....Where are my turns? I'm dyin' here!

Get you pizza delivery guy into the game. He'll do a turn every time he comes over...two birds, one stone.

Con: Each game (not turn) takes a long time to play. The turns may take only a few minutes to process (if all that is happening is people are continuing with prior orders) or may take hours to plan (if you are plotting a major offensive somewhere and searching for the shipping and leaders needed without disrupting other areas of the map). However tyhe long campaign is thousands of turns long.

Pro: Highly highly detailed, so that things happen for the right reason. You need to think a long long way ahead s good planning and forethought is rewarded and sloppy lack of planning is something you can't recover from by suddenly building a lot of new units or rushing from one side of the map to the other.

As a prime example, you actually need to think about training units before they get into action and you actually need to keep an eye not just on the numbers you are training or their supply and "safety" (not only not in combat, but not in a malarious area or too far from higher leaders). You even need to consider the quality of the people running your flight schools back in the US.

I sped up the flow of decent quality pilots to the South Pacific by putting better administrators in charge of flight schools in Seattle and San Francisco.

If you make a blunder here, you are stuck with the consequences for a long time. That is a Pro!

The auto pizza guy would probably repeatedly drive through the Vegan zone of control, placing my veggie pizza with too much cheese at risk every delivery. Why not go by the meat lovers block, they would never bother to harass a driver carrying a veggie pizza.

Just so ya don't freak, I like veggie pizza and I like meat. Just prefer veggie pizzas.

okay, enough of pizzas and junk food...

how is the convoi and supply system handled in this game ?

i noticed in HOI there are some shortcomings:

a) you can´t select exact routes ( the comp choses the seazones the
convo goes through - which means you cannot try to avoid zones where
you expect much enemy activity )

b) convois can´t be attacked with air

c) even unescorted convois cause org and str losses
to attacking fleets ( this can be very serious for example
if you have some heavy ships like BB and CA attacking unescorted
convois that also collect damage. this shall simulate failures
of ship systems and munition usage. also some transports are
meant to be armed - but of course the small guns can not harm
heavy ships shooting from the distance. perhaps they can do
damage to small combatans and surfaced subs )

d ) is much micromanagemant needed to manage the convois and supplies ??

Pizza is the food of the gods and one of the tasteyest pizzas I have
ever had was a Bockwurst and onion Pzza or a German suasage pizza.

I think the game is fantastic, bugs aside it is one that I also have been waiting
for for a long time, what other game can you imerse yourself into for hours
on end week after week for the next couple of years and still enjoy it?
Game life for me usually is a couple months if that, UV has been enjoyable
for a couple years and I still play PBEM with it, WITP is good for 5 years in my book.

At the moment, where the game sits now, micromanagement is the only way to go. it is not as bad as you think. After a while, you actually can look at a TF with the mouse over info and know what you had it doing.

I agree with most here, the game is great even with some of the almost show stopping bugs. As for HOI, I think its a joke. I played if for about 6 months and wrote it off.

I think Witp will be played and played for many years to come. I don't know if ill see another like it in my life time.

Indeed it is, so is this one:

quote:

Cons: Very complex, time consuming, long

IMHO the greatest wargame ever made. It plays fine as is. The patches will only make it better. The AI will give you a decent game if you play within semi historical bounds (much like HOI) The great fun of this one though is in PBEM and thanks to the great community here, there are always plenty of opponents.

Stay away if you don't like a very very deep grognard experience. Since you're playing HOI, lots of details aren't a problem If you have any intrest in this theater or like a good long detail rich game, then come aboard.

Needs an entire stable of house rules at the moment if ya want a real grognard experience though.

You know Ron, if you'd put more supply in place and more engineers to work, you might get your e-mail box upgraded from a size 1 to size 9 with the subsequent downloading and access speeds associated with the upgrades, hence you wouldn't have to wait so long between turns.

Can I load viruses onto my emails using a size 8 or less box, or do I need to upgrade the box to a 9 or use a virus support program?
