Hmm, corporate version doesn't seem to have any objections to them.

Yes, I did have a problem the other day.

It appeared that OE blocked files when Norton was updating the definitions. Once the definitions were updated, OE seemed to work fine.

Hope that helps

I installed it the other day, and so far the main problem I'm meeting with is at start-up, when the whole procedure either takes a much longer time than before, or hangs fire. My son tells me that its preventing him from opening links contained in e.mails., so that he has to edit, cut and paste them before he can use them.

McAfee is tranparant, never gets in the way, comes up very quickly at boot, seems to update at least every couple of days. I've been very satisfied with it.

Are you using Shaw cable?

Their system is eating the save files.... I have been working with their tech support guys. I can send save files out, but files coming to me go into the ether

pws files (saved games), including if they are inside zip files or renamed are not getting through.

Or of course if you don't have it, but your opponent uses Shaw, they will never see your files. Although they can send you files.

Whoever is on Shaw will be able to send files out, but they won't get them, nor will they get a notice saying they aren't coming. They just disappear.

At this point they don't have a solution. My best workaround is to have him set up a web-based mail account to receive files into. He can then download them once he receives them and send them out normally on his outgoing turn.

I think Hotmail's free account is too small to receive more than one file at a time, but there must be other systems.

It appears right now to be only their email side that is clobbering the files.

Misery loves company. I had this problem with Shaw several months ago, to fix it they had to send it up to the highest level of their organization I think that must have been God. I believe it must have something to do with there security because no one would tell me what fixed it last time.

McAfee isn't as transparent as you think. At my former job we told the 911 centers to not use it on the workstations they use for our dispatch system because it interferes with the network connections (which MUST be always up for our frontend software to work properly) and inconviently locks files up. Norton doesn't (or at least didn't) do that.

However, I recently had a problem with the Norton LiveUpdate and their tech support was MIA. Completely and utterly gone. Kept getting 404: Not Found errors online to their site and never once got anyone on the phone in two weeks of trying. Mr. Schwanebeck isn't the only customer they've lost.

Shaw cable can be very dirty. Helping my parents get WinXP installed and made the mistake of connecting to the internet prior to putting up a firewall, in no time I had 20 different virus infections. I had done the same thing with my dsl connection and never had the same trouble. Cable does have a much better download speed though in its favour.

LOL
I had the same thing happen when the forums went down about december or so
and my computor went down also.
I reinstalled windows and boom had 7 viruses which I think come in with
the updates as that is the only thing I downloaded that day.
Put in the firewall after reinstalling windows then downloaded the updates
works much better.

The viruses come in prior to the updates and not as a result of doing them. When first connected to the internet, infected computers scan for vunerable systems and infect those. You get the virus because the infected computers look for systems on the local LAN first you and all the other systems within an area are considered LAN, a dsl customer has a unique link with the provider and none of the links are shared.

A latest check by this WWW security group (can´t remeber the name currently), stated that an freshly installed unprotected PC that goes online is infested with worms, trojans and viruses within some 10 minutes.

To everyone my problem apparently is not related to Norton it was just coincidental that the problem happened at the same time I installed Norton don`t you just love coincidence`s they make so much more work.

The only time I've seen McAfee interfere with newtork connections is when it's doing it's Auto-Updates, if you disable or schedule your updates for a specific time you won't have this issue.

You can understand why they do this ... while the program is updating, there is the potential of being vulnerable. Safer to lock things up until the update has fully installed and is protecting you.

Everyone needs to be running anit-virus, a firewall(even dial-up) and anti-spyware.

Here's a link to some test results for just anti-spyware http://spywarewarrior.com/asw-test-results-1.htm

I hate Norton. Had to deal with it at work. Even in a corporate environment, it causes headaches. I've been using eTrust for a couple years now. never had a problem.

I didn't deal with the PC frontend programming. If the troubleshooting showed the problem was there I referred it to another group. I dealt with the code on the servers, which was where 85% of the problems were. (Customizations are a bitch. And everyone insists on them. )

But two points (if I can do this without turning this into an argument, trying to keep it to just a friendly discussion ). One, remember the environment and application. 911 Dispatch. The PCs are on and in use 24/7/365. There is no downtime when it is convient to schedule updates for. Two, what I was told is that the file and socket locking was during the scanning, not the updates.

Any rate, our account and project managers have had this discussion with local network admins and sysops. When its a $50 piece of software that has alternatives versus the $1,000,000 plus hardware/software installation that is considered critical to public safety, you can guess who wins the discussion.

Didn't you First install an ant-virius program? I suspect you mean
worms that took advantage of holes in mickysofts XP and in MSIE

Which is why one should install anti-virius software even if out of date
to give some protection, use a hardware firewall plus a software
use a non-microsoft browser since MSIE is full of many holes before patching besides the OS itself.

By unprotected I assume they mean a system newly installed without any firewall nor anti-virius software nor any updates.

Cant you just zip and password protect them?

And I use TrendMicro PCCillin, takes only 3% of system resourses with scanner and firewall enabled.

Zips won't go thru either, but we are having success with yousendit.com
for the interim.
although I never thought of password protecting a zip file, I will give it a try.
