Status: offline 		It's something my wife tells me I should do when I get out of the Marine Corps. I was just wondering since that so many of you have so much knowledge of things that happened in the past if any of you have ever given thought to trying to teach todays generation what you know?

Honestly, the best history teachers are great story tellers. If you can make it interesting to them and help them form connections that they can relate to, you'll be well on your way.

Status: offline 		I retire from police work in 3572 days (August 14th, 2014 not that I am counting or anything ) and plan on teaching History at either the High School or college level. My wife is a teacher so I am familar with the ins and outs of the profession. I teach at the police academy (Emergency Vehicle Operations, Narcotics, and Counterfeit ID recognition) so I know I have a knack for it.

Had there been money in it in the 80's when I was in college I would be a teacher now. But in 3572 days they will give me 65% of my pay not to come to work anymore so money will not be an issue and I can do what I love.

The one thing I will make all of my students do is read 1984 and Starship Troopers. 1984 shows how history can be rewritten and Starship Troopers is a great explaination of why we fight.

Status: offline 		Well the whole retirement from the Marine Corps thing should be able to provide some of the lost income from not pursueing a more lucritive profession. Money has never been a huge deal to me. Otherwise I wouldn't have stayed in the military

Throw in "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress" for a good dose of why we fight - and you might be the crustiest History teacher I would go a long way to listen to and argue with. To bad they did such an egregious excremental job with the movie "Starship Troopers."

Status: offline 		How good were my history teachers in school?

I went to university and took Canadian military history, thats how good they were.

When you hear how Canadians when attacked by gas and first engaged by the Germans in WWI and held their ground by pissing on some cloth to tie over their face to neutralize the gas and held in 1915 at Ypres and later how the Germans knew they were in trouble when Canadians took the line in front of them. Kurt Meyer, general of the 12 SS, saying he would rather face Russians than Canadians in WW2. The one of only 2 foreign units to recieve a Presdential Citiation is Canadian, the other is Austrailian and at the end of that day, only the Canadians held the field, both recieved for action at the same battle.

Imagine for a moment how horrible the first gas attack was against the French Algerian troops was, afterwards they noted that even the insects were dead, that animals that burrow in the ground were found dead just out of their bolt holes and in that night the Germans were denied the fruit of their victory by Canadian counterattacks. The wife of the man responsible for developing this weapon commited suicide that night as they celebrated because it was such a horror. Adolf Hitler denied this to his troops due to his own experience with it. And the next day, when Canadians for the first time faced a European army they tied cloth wet with their own urine to their faces and held. If you go to Ypres today, every day you can here Taps played in honour of those Canadians that saved their city.

This has been another example of boring Canadian history. Yes its been jazzed up some, but it is essentially true. imo

Hope you are ready to go back to college, get your teaching certificate in your specialty, then spend two years a student teacher/substitute making less than $25,000 a year before you get your first job. And then you get to fight the state on you curriculum and have every candy-a$$ed left wing moron parent threaten to sue you because of your stance on the Atomic Bombings of Japan or the supramecy of Western European culture and it's child, American culture on the planet.

A few days before the German attack at Ypres a German deserter was picked up by the French. He filled them in on the details of the upcoming offensive. The French Corps commander dismissed the intel report as incredulous. His name: PUTZ

Actually Osama Bin laden has put Canada on enemy list but he want to destroy USA first. The milleium bomber was based in Canda. A US immigration officer 50, miles from Testarosa home, prevented it. In the 1980s Pierre Trudeau our (PM) wanted nuclear disarmament and appeasement of the Iron curtain, things did not work out in that case. During WWII Pierre a draft dodger drove around Montreal on a motorcycle with his Nazi helmet. He did visit and praise Communist China a few years later. But he did call in marital law when 2 kidnapping occurred in Quebec. In the 1980s The Canadian governement did not want to deport the Skih bomber, who later blew up an Air India 747, becuase India was not part of the British Empire (commonwealth). In 1990s The Canadian government sent their fleet to chase after 2 Portuguese fishing ship about 200 miles off the Newfoundland coast.

Were you referring to Fritz Haber's wife committing suicide on the night after the gas attack? As I understand it he was a prime mover in getting the German General Staff to try out chemical warfare. Ironic that he got a Nobel prize in 1919 for another of his "discoveries" - the Haber Process whereby atmospheric Nitrogen and Hydrogen are economically combined to form ammonia thereby providing Germany with an industrial process by which they might obtain nitrates; without which their entire munitions industry would have collapsed in 1915 for lack of a critical ingredient in explosives (the British blockade cut off access to the natural sources (bird poop on Pacific Islands).
Of course he didn't get the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for extending the Great War by 3 years but rather because his discovery allowed for a massive increase in the ability to produce fertilizer for agriculture as well.
Again ironic that when Germany committed their entire nitrate production to munitions in 1916 they practically guaranteed a miserable harvest in 1917 which led to starvation in 1918 and the armistice.

The movie had nudity and explosions so it automatically gets 2 stars. Aside from that it was a waste of time and celluloid.

I will have to check out the book you recommend. Perhaps I can finish it while I wait for the patch to download via dial up.

Status: offline 		RUPD, the book for Starship troopers is far different from the movie. I was almost disgusted enough to walk out of the movie. The Book is not nearly the Authoritarian model the movie puts forth.

I have thought of being a History teacher since I was 8 or 9 years old. I went to college to major in History and environmental sciences (Geology and Oceanography) but ran out of money. I joined the USN and then got out in 1996. I haven't been back to school yet but I keep meaning to. I would love to teach, and I do tell good stories. I do not think I could handle to pay cut, nor the nearly work for free issue for an intern. The politics and such also drive me nuts. But, I keep coming back to it, and many of my Teacher friends think I would be good at it.

This is an organization dedicated to recruiting new teachers. They have an excellent guidebook called "Take This Job and Love It" that can be ordered from their web site. I saw a bit about them on television about four years ago ordered their guide. I went back to school and got my teaching license from Indiana University and am now back and working on my Master's Degree in Secondary Education. Then I intend to head west and work with the Navajo Nation schools. I just turned 57 and had a successful career in business and later software development. Teaching beats the hell out of anything I've done before in my life.

Don't get into it for the money though - get into it because you want to make a positive impact on lives.

If you are serious about making a mid-life career change to teaching, this is the place to start.

I was a history minor- phi alpa theta honor society- but job market being what it was, i took a job in the - and i am sorry to curse here- the telecommunications industry. i would love to go back to a job that allowed me to make use of all the readings i did as a little hornblower. and do do something far more important to what i am doing now. namely the passing of knowledge from our/my generation to the next.

Finally got a chance to read the book and loved it. I will definitly add it to my students' required reading list if I ever teach.

Being a State employee I loved the bit about the guy polishing the brass cannon. I have met many people with similar jobs.
