I can transfer planes to a ship and then immediately transfer them off to another base. is this correct?

That depends ... were the ships in the same hex as the base that the planes were at?

No they were at sea, about 5 or six hexes away. The planes were f4u-1's. I transfered them from Eniwetok to a cvl and then from the cvl to satawal all in the same turn.
