After spending thousands of hours with Pacific War I have finally made the move to War in the Pacific about a week ago. I’m sure glad the 1.3 patch came out while I was only up to December 17th so that starting over isn’t quite as painful, but slogging through the first move again rounding up all the AKs and sending each sub out again sure is painful

Anyway, here is my first of what will probably be many questions.

What should I do with all the allied MSWs with extremely limited endurance? They have good ASW, so I thought of using them in ASW task forces, but there range is so poor that I can hardly put them where they are needed. Another thought was to put them in Karachi or San Francisco as escorts for the auto convoys until other escorts become available or to use them to help escort APs for awhile, but I am afraid that there poor endurance will slow the convoys down too much if they need to keep refueling from the larger ships.

So what do other people do with these?

Keep a few ships around for mine clearing opps at majort bases and for offencise opps, send the bulk to Karachi and San Fran as excorts. Your better using Flush deck dd's for asw opps until the better DD's De's amd SC start to appear on mass. APD's aslo have a good asw rating.

The msw may have low endurance but some escort is better than no escort, you only have a finite number of DD PC and PG's available and the waters of the pacific are crawling with ijn subs with working torps...... who rairly miss an nice juicy ap or ak loaded with troops or planes.

Good idea. I was putting the flush class DDs in San Francisco as escorts, but it is probably better to reverse the role and use them to patrol in ASW task forces and to put the MSWs with high ASW there.

To be honest i would not use the auto convoy system, it has a few issues like sending shipping to bases that require sailing through betty and nell range... can get a little expensive on the shipping front...

Your better of creating an manageing your own transport TF's once you have created a few routeen convoys running to and from safe back water areas you should be ok.

I had the bases all default to off and only turned on the ones that are safe, but it would probably still be more efficient to handle all the convoys manually. I noticed that on the first game I started, all of the auto convoys in the first week of the war were headed to Canada and Alaska!

It's not a problem to put the short-legged MSWs in with convoys (no matter how far they have to travel), because the convoy will refuel the MSWs as the go along. Putting the MSWs into a dedicated ASW TF too early (say, before February) isn't the best use of them; because while they do often have a good ASW rating of 4, they're not likely to use it, because many of the early MSWs only have an exp rating in the 30s. Best to put them on convoy escort until their exp rating is 45+, then you can see about putting them in an ASW group.

Personally, I'd still keep them on convoy escort tho. Having them in your major convoys means they're going to your major ports (which have the potential to be mined), or nearby. And if you have an amphib op that actually requires the clearing the mines (not likely so early in the war as Allies), you can just grab a few from your convoys.

My 2 pfennigs.

Thanks for the further advice. I completely forgot that they would likely not use their ASW until their experience is higher. I did have a task force with four patrol boats sink a submarine off of Hawaii in the opening days of the war, but maybe that was lucky.
