Status: offline 		During the night of Dec 8/41 the lone cruiser Huston’s radar picked up a Japanese patrol. Surprise was in their hands and they quickly took the CL Nagara out of action before turning to the destroyer Kamikaze. Managing to silence these two ships the Huston succumbed to the superior numbers and Japanese torpedo attacks from the 4 other destroyers. Philippine fishermen came out looking for survivors, but any survivors were reported killed by the Japanese destroyers anti aircraft guns that racked the hull of the Huston as it slipped below the waves. Captain Albert Rooks has been nominated for the Congressional Medal of Honour, his actions and those of his crew are fine examples of the US Navy’s bravery and seamanship.

Status: offline 		I suggested "Two Newbs and an Ocean Between Them", as this is both our first PBEM game. In my case it is my first game and the first time I even looked at the Jap side.

Should be fun, the Pacific War three stooges style.

December 7th 1941, a day that will live in infamy. Today off the coast of the Philippines the Japanese cruise ship Shinano Maru was suddenly and deliberately attacked by an Imperial U.S. submarine.

In sudden retaliation for this outrage, forces of Japan were ordered to attack the U.S. and it’s allies. A full scale invasion of the Philippines has been under taken in response, and the Army and Navy have taken control of Bataan, Wake, and Guam. The American cruiser Houstin was sunk when it attacked ships screening the Shinano Maru from further attacks.

“I feigned surprise to draw the round eye into my trap, then sprung like a cat on a mouse” The commanding officer was quoted in reports to fleet command.

The American base at Pearl Harbor was bombed as a warning that aggression will not be tolerated by Japan. A force of American cruisers was also attacked when it sortied out in pursuit of our carriers. One cruiser and two mine sweepers were sunk.

In the interests of stopping possible British aggression the Army has landed troops at Khota Bharu.

Army forces today secured three bases in the Philippines Islands. Vigan, Aparri and Legaspi came under control easily with little resistance. The U.S. forces wilt before direct opposition by or grand Army.

The Commonwealth troops at Hong Kong were asked to surrender today by representatives of our glorious Chinese Expeditionary Force. “In the interests of saving many lives it is best they do not fight. Why die for a foreign King when you can build roads in Burma for us?” No response to this request has yet been received.

Status: offline 		The light cruiser Nagara was reported hit by the USN Perch with a torpedo and is currently heavily damaged and on fire several days from a safe port. Her escorts managed a couple of successful depth charge attacks and now the Perch returns to port for some relief from flooding damage.

Admiral Kimmel has told reporters that after the Pearl Harbor attacks, that "carriers still have to prove themselves as a viable weapon against battleships, truly the battleship still rules the waves."

An unconfirmed report from Hong Kong suggests that Canadian soldiers are tieing down Japanese POW's to the outside of their bunkers, this just after reports of Canadian wounded being killed in their hospital beds by Japanese soldiers. Reporters have been barred from the Canadian sector and confirmation is not possible.

Over cocktails, Gen MacAurther reported that base units at Vigan, Aparri and Legaspi successfully disengaged from the Japanese and retreated in good order to their pre-planned fallback positions. "Thoses boys did a good job holding as long as they did and could have done longer too, the Japo has paid dearly for those beaches and will pay even more before this war is done, I will only leave the Phillipines as a free man or dead, mark my words."

In Singapore, the British commander reports that Khota Bharu still holds well and Hudosns and Blenhiems successfully struck a Japanese battleship, "we are really proud and chuffed out over that hit, have been trying for sometime it seems to get one, I can tell you all the boys here in Malaya are happy to hear that. They press really hard, but like an egg in the right spot, we are hard to crush, that is how I would describe the entire Malay defense force."

Status: offline 		I think that everyone's AAR has value to the community and are worth being read. We learn about what can be done and what is possible and we also give the developers something to look at as well to make this game better. Both my opponnent and myself are new to this game and both find it quite engrossing with all of its detail. We have a great deal of respect for wisdom found in this forum and hope we can add to it in some way. Since both of us will be posting here, what can be reported is constrained by information access.

Rear Admiral Nishimura repots that he has caught and sunk three British destroyers south of Puerto Princesa. The destroyers were believed to be fleeing from Hong Kong. “The British squadron was no match for us and our torpedoes made short work of two of them.” Nishimura stated. “One destroyer evaded us and ran south. I was able to catch up with it 120nm away and finish the job I started.”

National Chinese troops shelled Nanchung. Casualties from the resulting artillery exchange where reported to be light. Moe’s communists in the north have moved east in what appears to be preparations for offensive operations. The Chinese are trying to take advantage the sudden out break of war to intensify fighting. Confidence is high through out China that these attacks can be weathered.

Two more U.S. ships were sunk near the Philippines as the mighty Imperial Japanese Navy continues the blockade on the island chain. Kate torpedo bombers flying off of IJN ships conducted air attacks against a large task force fleeing south. Concentrated attacks scored several hits on the two vessels and claimed both.

Sources inside navy command report that the leadership is very disappointed with the performance of the submarine force. The reported loss of another IJN sub today brings the tally to three in as many days. “We are loosing more submarines than scoring torpedo hits” an angry navy source stated. “The wisdom of deploying these fragile boats is in question.” A memo on torpedo aiming techniques sent to all submarine commanders was also leaked.

The Chinese expeditionary force captured the Chinese city of Changsha early this morning. Fully supported troops from the 3rd and 34th Divisions stormed the city at sunrise. “We suspected the defense of Changsha had been weakened to support the offensive at Nanchang” reported Lt. General Ohga of the 34th Division. “We encountered three Chinese combat units, but they offered little resistance and have retreated from the city”

Heavy fighting in Hong Kong continues. The city is expected to fall anytime as troops have been successful in digging the commonwealth units out of their outer defense works.

Lt. General Yamashita of the 23rd Army reports that the base at Khota Bharu has been secured. “The air attacks from Singapore and the elite Dutch submarines are making things tough on us.” Yamashita claimed. “The troops had been bogged down before my arrival. I expect things to move more rapidly now that I have arrived with fresh troops and supplies.”

There was heavy fighting in China from north to south. Japanese defenders at Kaifeng and Nanchang repulsed attacks by Chinese infantry.

Lt. General Tadayoshi accepted the surrender of the Hong Kong garrison.

The Imperial Guards backed by tanks stormed the Btitish base at Victoria Point. Amoung the captured were many skilled engineers who will aid the Burma rail program.

IJN planes attacked a convoy near Naga sinking at least a half a dozen ships. Fatigue is becoming the enemy as U.S. ships continue to test the blockade.

Cpt. Yokota of the I-26 reports torpedoing and sinking an American destroyer 1200nm NE of Pearl Harbor. This is the first confirmed kill by the IJN Submarine forces.

Japanese Army elements landed at the Kuching beach in Borneo. Heavy gun fire from the shore hit several ships and casualties were high.

The Chinese peasant army harassing Nanchang was scattered into the country side in a strong assault by the garrison forces. It is expected that this will greatly stabilize the situation in central China.

Heavy aerial resistance has been encountered at Clark Field in the Philippines. Army fighters flying a fighter sweep in the area were surprised to find them selves out numbered in the skies over the U.S. airbase. Casualties were alarming stated a secret source at the Aparri base.

Lt. General Kawaguchi reports capturing the Borneo base of Kuching just twenty-four hours after landing under heavy coastal gun fire. IJN battleships provided suppressing fire for the attack.

IJN command reports landing troops at the Philippine base of Davao. Details will be forth coming.

4th Fleet reports occupying the deserted bases of Tarawa and Emirau in the south pacific.

Yesterdays air losses over Clark field prompted an all day bombing of Manila. The air attacks reported doing heavy damage to the airbase but there was no reports of destroying the elusive P40s that have been challenging air units in the area.

The recent landings at Tarawa drew a response from the U.S. Navy. Carrier based aircraft from the Lexington bombed the island late in the day. The IJN invasion ships narrowly escaped in the early morning hours after acting on sketchy spotting reports received late yesterday. The SS RO-68 was also sunk in the action.

In the Philippines today more allied merchantmen were sunk testing the IJN blockade. A cruiser force attacked and sunk two ships loading at the anchorage of Tacloban. Air attacks claimed another southeast of Davao.

The elite 56th Brigade chased Philippine defenders from the Base at Davao. Fighting was lighter than expected and the facilities are in good condition.

The 5th Division remains bogged down at Alor Star in Malaysia. Lt. General Matsui’s forces are making little progress against unexpectedly stiff resistance. To the north in Burma, Army forces announced the occupation of the abandoned U.K. base of Tavoy.

An all out assault by Japanese forces at Kaifeng failed to push back the Chinese forces threatening the city. Hospitals were filled to overflowing by the end of the days fighting.

The abandoned bases of Taytay and Lamon Bay in the Philippines were occupied by IJN landing forces.

Rear Admiral Goto reports the sinking of a U.S. transport taskforce at the Pacific base of Rabaul. Goto’s four cruisers came upon the cargo ships in the night and sunk two with torpedoes as they scattered. Nell aircraft flying from Truk found and torpedoed the fleeing remnants in the early morning.

Japan makes progress in the Philippines today occupying bases at Lingayen and Laoag. The weather and terrain have been the main obstacles. The Philippine defenders have not been encountered in any numbers so far in the campaign.

In the South Pacific Navy troops have landed at the beaches near Rabaul. Two days of naval bombardment silenced coastal guns and few casualties were reported.

Investigations continue on the liquidation of the naval pilot training program. Students in the program were so eager to join the war that all left the schools in a made rush to join any combat group with a spare plane to use. The schools have been completely drained of skilled pilots. The war department claims a new system is being implemented and the main culprits have been found and punished.

Status: offline 		Well after 12 days the Japanese are still just over the Malay border and on the beaches of the Phillipines, the Yellow Storm is just a summer drizzle it seems. ASW operations are reported ahead of schedule and although our ship sinking reports are small I am certain that many Japanese ships are in port badly damaged from many successful submarine attacks. Carriers successfully drove away Japanese ships during the invasion of Tarawa before landing operations could complete and then proceeded to punish the abandoned Japanese garrison. The carriers continue to look for targets of oppurtunity and a suitable base of operations to continue the attack on Japan or to cripple its naval actions with fear of swift retribution and attack.

The Royal Navy reports that all major naval assets have merged and are now ready to commence operations against the Japanese, if he should come into the Bay of Bengal. Strong landbased air assets stand ready to assist. Strong formations of land units continue to build at the Burma border and planning for eventual counter operations against disorganised, unsupplied Japanese troops are already underway.

The current stalemate in the Phillipines has emboldened local commanders to consider limited counterattacks to further disrupt the enemy's hoped for advances. General Jose Soliven of the Philopino Army was quoted as saying, "We fight for our homes and our nation, we are fortunate to have our American friends here to help with this invasion, but I think you will see that Japan has bitten off more than it can chew here. Go hard or go home and we are already home."

If you pull the tiger's tail, you should be ready for the tiger's claws.

Further progress in the Philippine islands, Lt. General Yamada’s 48th Division drove defenders from Tuguegareo. The Philippinos where forced into the jungle as Tanks had captured the mountain roads above them. The island base of Guiuan was also occupied.

Navy troops remain pinned on the beaches at Rabaul. All out attacks and constant naval bombardment could not budge the defenders. A tour of the landing was described as “grim”.

The Battleships Hyuga and Ise shelled the airbase at Mendano. They were pleased to find American B-17 bombers in the hangers there. The navy has claimed a knock out blow on this Dutch outpost.

Repeated Air attacks on a Dutch taskforce heading for the port at Balikpapan came up empty. In spite of multiple raids launched from four different airbases the attacking panes could not claim more than 2 hits and reported no serious damage.

Heavy rains ground aircraft through out the theatre of operations.

Lt. General Matsui’s 5th Division supported by tanks overran the base at Alor Star in Malaysia. The rout of the Indian forces there finally breaks the stalemate on the peninsula. “We expect a quick campaign now that we are moving” Matsui told reporters.

Heavy casualties were again reported at Kaifeng in northern China. The 32nd and 35th Divisions met with stubborn resistance to attacks outside the city. It seems there will be a long struggle to loose the Chinese insurgents from the north.

Navy forces occupied the Philippine Island base at Ormac. Island hoping on this front is going on with out a hitch.

Light cruisers contionued to shell the defenders at Rabual. "We are keeping the presure on" Claimed navy sources. American submarines have been spotted near the island and scored a hit on transports supplying the attack.

The War Office released numbers on the amount of Allied shipping claimed sunk during the first two weeks of the war. A total of forty-three ships, almost four ships a day. The details are as follows;

The allied light cruiser Java was stuck with two torpedoes as it fled Balikpapan. Lt. Commander Handa’s Nells flying out of Kuching were finally able to claim some success against the elusive task force operating south of Borneo.

Heavy fighting was reported at the Philippine town of Naga. Determined attacks met with solid resistance at the edge of the town. Some progress was reported against the fortified positions protecting the outskirts.

Australian forces launched ferocious counter attacks against the beachhead at Rabaul. The Navy troops were able to repel the onslaught inflicting heavy losses on the enemy.

Lt. Commander Handa’s flying Dragons out of Kuching score a second victory in as many days. Shortly after receiving confirmation that the CL Java sunk off the cost of Borneo the Dragons drew blood at Muntok. The Nells followed up on earlier attacks from Saigon and hit three ships heading to the anchorage sinking two of them.

A second day of heavy fighting was reported at the Philippine town of Naga. The 16th Division could not budge the stubborn defenders.

The navy subjected Rabaul to air and naval bombardments in support of the landing. Light cruisers and Nells flying out of Truk participated.

Over twenty Navy carrier planes struck the airbase at Menado. Details of the attack are not being released.

The light cruisers Isuzu and Jintsu bombarded the airbase at Singkawang in the middle of the night. The attack appears to have caught several Dutch airplanes out of their protective dugouts. Planes from the base had been harassing Kuching supply convoys.

Forces exchanged artillery bombardments at Naga. IJA forces rested after the heavy fighting of the last two days.

Rabaul was subjected to air and naval bombardments again today. Supplies and support troops were landed under the cover of the attacks. IJN troops also landed at the base of Lae in New Guinea late in the day.

Elements of the 5th Division probed defenses at Taiping in Malaysia. Resistance to the attacks was weak.
