I have mentioned this before admittedly, but times change (and the forum list has grown even longer).

Isn't it about time, whomever is given the priviledge/thrill/responsibility od controlling the look of the forums, to address at least some sort of organizing?

Here is currently just the list of games present at Matrix games forums.

Tin Soldiers: Alexander the Great
Battles in Normandy
War In The Pacific - Struggle Against Japan 1941 - 1945
Starshatter Ultimate Space Combat
FlashPoint Germany
Gates of Troy
Supremacy: Four Paths To Power
Highway to the Reich
Conquest of the Aegean
Gary Grigsby's World at War
Campaigns on the Danube 1805 - 1809
Guns of August 1914 - 1918
Empire in Arms the Napoleonic Wars of 1805 - 1815
Korsun Pocket
Titans of Steel - Warring Suns
Uncommon Valor - Campaign for the South Pacific
Combined Arms: World War II (formerly Battlefields!)
Combat Leader - Cross of Iron
Close Assault - Code of Honor
Starships Unlimited Divided Galaxies
World in Flames
Operation Barbarossa..Campaign add-on for IL2 Sturmovik and Forgotten Battles
Steel Panthers World At War & Mega Campaigns
Pacific War: The Matrix Edition
War In Russia: The Matrix Edition
Massive Assault at Wargaming.Net
World War II Online at Playnet.com

Heck of a list, 27 games given some level of interest credit or acknowledgement.
Isn't sorted alphabetically (not that that is important).
But it isn't sorted at all to the best of my ability to discern.

Some of the above 27 game sections also contain yet further sub sections as well.

Is it important they be sorted at all?

Hmm

I would think they could at least be sorted out a bit.

My first suggestion would be to divide the games that actually exist, today, on sale, now from all the games that are merely ideas or works in progress.

Not that those games are in some way less in worth than those that are already completed and on sale.

But, I come to the forums (as do others) and I see a massive selection of games (with forums), and of course, I wonder, are thse games on sale, or are they just the comment forums for games that might be.

Games like Close Assault, lead the pack of titles I think we have all decided (whether anyone likes to admit it) are unlikely to see the light of day any time soon (by that I mean in the next few years). And, considering it has been a few years snce CA was first even mentioned, you can hardly fault me for wondering, was there a point to ever making a singled out forum for that game.

Games like Conquest of the Agean or Gary's World at War, I suspect most of us have no trouble assuming will show up close to on schedule.

But I see this looooong list of games forums, some of which might interest me potentially as joe consumer, but it would not be so bad if I could no at a glance, these games are on sale, and these are their forums, and these games (pointing to games in development) are games we are working on, and those are their forums.

If you had to ask me, to name which games Matrix Games has on sale, which are just being supported, and which are close to completion, as well as the games likely best termed long term notionals, I could not really tell you.

Who specifically IS the person tasked with the creation management and appearance of the forums?
There IS a person(s) isn't there?

You remind me of this trouble-maker named Les that use to frequent these forumns daily. Then one day he just disappeared. I wasn't even invited to the funeral!

It seems trivial enough.

But I've been wanting to say the same thing, even when just lurking about epecially since the logic behind the current sort order completely eludes me.

Its a problem especially when I visit less frequent as it seems I almost have to re-check each game to see what was released or whats really close to release. I tend to go straight to the forums.

I would suggest 3 categories:

RELEASED GAMES, sorted in order from newest to oldest release or perhaps alphabetical with the newest 2 or so at the top.
BETA LEVEL GAMES UNDER DEVELOPMENT, sorted by most likely to be finished first to least or else by popularity
ALPHA LEVEL GAMES UNDER DEVELOPMENT, for the stuff that has no hopes of seeing the light of day anytime soon like Close Assault, World in Flames etc to be sorted alphabetically.

This would help me know what is available NOW and what I should definitely have on my WISH LIST.

I suggest to all those in favor of re-orginizing the forums in some way to grab their pitchforks and /sign this thread!

I second that. At least in released games/beta games sections. It's confusing right now.

Not only that, the sort order seems to change from time to time.

I think the newest games are put to the top in the hopes that we explore them. I mean newest in the sense that Matrix just signed a deal to publish them or they were most recently released... Thats just the sense I get.

I think the most popular forums should be first, just as a convenience to forum-goers. Although this would likely put some newer games at the bottom, those of us who frequent the Witp and SPWAW forums might appreciate the ability to just find our forums at the top...

My two cents, but then again, what do I know?!

Yes, that's basically right. Of course, it's a bit variable as to when we have a moment to update the order and what our current guess on the release date is. In general, the newest release will be at the top and going down from there should be the previous releases, after a certain point the "coming soon" titles kick in, after that the older releases.

There have been some good ideas in this thread and we'll take another look at forum organization around the holidays to see how we can improve for 2005.

Regards,

- Erik

As they say, anything worth doing, is worth doing right.

I say, take a serious look at forum design for the holidays.

The "look" we have now, is not user friendly as it currently stands (my opinion).

Warfare HQ recently merged with Arm Chair General. It suddenly became rather "big" and was quite unwieldy. But they went and got some input, then used what seemed like good comments, and today, they have a much cleaner much easier to manage looking forum.

Matrix Games forums were a lot easier to "use" in 2002, but that was then, this is now guys :)

You definitely need a face lift.

Careful. If they give the job to the same guys who worked on the WitP leader leak, the Japanese will wind up running Christmas.
