I'm playing as the Japanese vs the AI in scenario 15. Historical first turn.

Wake is in the process of fighting off my third attack. The NLF that lands on day 1 was annihilated. I sent two more NLFs, who landed and promptly had all their squads become disorganized. They didn't look like they were going to get the job done so I diverted the South Seas Detachment, along with more cruisers for shore bombardment.

After three days of shock attacks and heavy bombardment, Wake's defenders still fight on.

Question: with this situation would it be better to switch to deliberate attacks? Shock attacks don't seem to be working.

I thought you can only shock attack when attacking an atoll?!?

I have always managed to take Wake on turn 1. Take the bombardment group assigned to the Guam landings and reassign it to Wake.

If I try for Wake without that bombardment group, some times I can not take it. By using it, I have 100% of the time taken Wake on day 1.

Wake, is an atoll. You have no choice; on the turn you land, you will shock attack. After that, you can change it (I think). After three days of making shock attacks, South Seas Detachment may be blown. Deliberate assaults are probably better for this situation. If you let them rest for a few days they may recover enough from disruption/fatigue/disablement to try again. Hitting the defenders with both naval and air bombardment on the first turn of your new assault will likely help a great deal.

It takes landing two or three of those NLFs from Kwaj together on Wake at the start to insure success.

Prep-Points (future objective) can make a BIG difference. Consider it a multiplier (altho it's probably not exactly as I describe).

If you have an LCU with assault str of 100..
Sort of like Prep-Points 0 = +0% assault value. Assault value remains at 100.
Prep-Points 20 = +20% assault value. Assault value increases to 120 (if you attack the hex that is your objective).

I'm sure it's not that clean cut, but it's -is- something like that.

A lot of folks are in a rush to conquer the Pacific my February. Take you time. Rest. Reduce that fatigue. Get that moral back up. Accumulate some prep-points. Bomb/Shell the hell out of 'em, they're not going anywhere.

I waited a week and had a couple BB's bombard wake for 3 days. My tranports then landed without a single ship being hit by coastal guns. Wake fell easily a day later. A side benifit is that day one invasions are vulnerable to US carriers which raid Wake while KB is at PH.

Speed kills. Take a little more time whenever possible.

Don't forget you have some engineers available as well which is a combat multiplier so load one of the engineers at Kwaj up with one extra NLF and away you go.

Yeah,

I found that taking atolls is a very tricky thing to do. I had an entire division become "disorganized" and promptly destroyed after 3 days of back and forth shock attacks on Kwajelein in the '43 scenario. I think the trick is to get at least 2x the manpower you need to stuff into the initial beachhead so that not every single squad is critical. The cold-blooded bastard that I am, it is becoming part of my SOP to land a destoyer-load of troops first, just to see what I'm up against before I commit.

Even better is sub transported units. Recon by fire with less ship and LCU losses.

Ack! You ought to lose major VP's and/or PP's for such a thing. You ought to be court-martialed! I know it's impossible to implement a punishment for this kind of thing ... but I wish there was a way. Sheesh!

Well, I think its only fair. This game doesnt model commando raids or UDT ops. In short, there is no way to sneak a small recon force onto an atoll. This seems like a good compromise to me. Look at it as a small commando operation that always goes wrong.
