I picked up the movie 'the beast' in the bargain bin a wal-mart for four bucks on DVD and I thought it was a decent movie.

It kinda sparked mt interest in the russian/afghan war.Does anyone have a clue on any good reading material on this war?I would prefer first person but if thats not possible anything good and informative will do.

Thanks!

"The Rise of the Taliban in Afghanistan" by Neamatollah Nojumi is a decent book dealing with the aftermath of the war. Having just returned from Afghanistan three months ago I will caution you about most books dealing with the Soviet invasion. All of the books I have read try to paint the Muhajideen as some expert guerrilla fighter. The truth of the matter is that the Soviets lost for one simple reason. They would not dismount their infantry from their APC's. The insurgents we went after in Afghanistan had one very common observation. We sent dismounted infantry after them into the hills and mountains, they for the most part do not know how to deal with that.
I wish I still had a picture of it. We had an area outside Kabul we called the Boneyard. Inside this area was probably enough destroyed and disabled Soviet tanks, APC's, SP's, and other equipment to equip four to five Tank Divisions and enough left over for a couple of Motorized Rifle Divisions. The Afghans were canablizing this equipment to keep their equipment running.
