Luck? Actually the other way around. I now know that zero carriers can be lost taking Pearl Harbor. Just take the smaller Hawaiian islands with troops and build up the airfields. No reason at all to risk any carriers getting in range of Pearl Harbor. What is the point of moving carriers close to Pearl Harbor after the intial attack?

If anyone wants detailed instructions on how to take New Zealand, I'll give them to you. There are two tactics. Come at the place directly by landing on the north island or indirectly by landing on the south island.

If you go north, you need to go in very early with one division and one brigade or wait for three divisions if the Allies get the NZ division before you arrive. Post two or three carriers on each side of the islands. Land two hex behind Wellington or Auckland to avoid the coastal guns. Now you have won the battle.

If you go south, you'll not need more than one division for the initial landing. Land at Christchurch. Build up the airfield and port. Destroy Wellington. Land a couple of divisions and win the battle.



You should be second guessing dude, he's clearly inept. PH is easy to take. You first take all the undefended bases around it, along with Midway, Johnston Island, and Palmyra. But after you take these bases you actually move AIRCRAFT onto them. And you move massive IJN forces into the area to support the carrier raiders. After the first attacks on PH you switch the missions of the carrier planes to naval attack. If you play this right one of two things will happen, either the allied player will flee or you will trounce the USN. Either way PH is cut off from supplies. Now you can take it. BUT, you have to land several divisions, armored units that you released from the home islands and armored units that you released from the Kwantang army, lots of engineers, and HQ units.

If you don't take PH and you don't inflict high casualties on the USN at PH and continue to do so,and there is no reason why you can't, you will have trouble later.

I can't even begin to fathon how you throw away an entire army at NZ.

Obviously the details of following this strategy were not thought through. As I have always said these strategies take PLANNING and preparation and you have to plan to the last ship, last plane, last soldier.

I still feel that this ineptitude is on purpose to discredit me.

Status: offline 		So what did he do that was so bad, he killed me at PH, however if you are going to land there you will lose a lot of ships. Remember you can not stop every ship I send into PH with supplies and they can repair airfields quickly. He did take all of the bases around PH first. However if you commit the japaneses airforce to major long term battles they will decline in fast order. If I have supplies in PH I can replace planes with better pilots than he can bring. That is why he has lost so many planes and combat ships. He lost his best pilots and his replacements can't compare to mine. That is Japan's problem, you can only attack at the start were you have such a great advantage the other player can not hurt you. If you fight a lot of big air battles at the start you can never catch up. You need time to train up pilots and bulid reserves. In a all out offensive you can not do this. Just the Op loses will degrade your units fast. He has done the best he could have done, but things have caught up to everywhere except China. It is now hard for him to come close to many of my bases with ships, because they will be sunk by air power. He has lost 6 cv's, 3cvl's, and 3cve's because of the degrading of his pilots skills. Not really his fault just a by product of an all out Japanese commitment. Yes it will take me a while to make my moves witht the allies, but once I get aircraft into an area he is finished in that area except China and Burma were he has a great edge in troops. He has no offensive punch in his navy any more and he has lost like 1300 zero's, so he has to be really hurting in his pilot skill levels. How long will he hold out who knows, he will should take all of china and then move those troops to other places. Will it be in time, at this point I am not afraid of any Japanese airbase any where in the Pacific.

LOL, this is basically exactly what I did. I did cut him off from supply and placed several hundred aircraft around PH. That's why I took the place so easily. I still lost several dozen APs though, there isn't anything that can be done about that.

The entire US fleet was basically sunk at PH. Zeta has lost 11 battleships so far, all of them of the slow US variety.

It's easy. The Allies get the New Zealand division pretty quickly. Then they can slowly send in more reinforcements over the months. It became a situation where both sides were sending reinforcements and the Allies have the advantage because they are on the defensive. Also, it's basically impossible to send resupply convoys because of the coastal guns and LBA.

That's the understatement of the day! His plans are interesting but is the attitude he displays some kind of macho roleplay or what? It certainly isn't flattering!

I thought the PH invasion went perfectly -- the taking of nearby bases, the LBA attacks, the limited exposure of the fleet. I do think that he might have lost a carrier or two, but Dude put his fleet in a position where he could get lucky. Standing toe-to-toe in PH will lose carriers no doubt about it. Going for the nearby islands gives you a good chance at not doing that.

The problem with NZ was that Dude didn't do that. The carriers lingered, there were few (if any) nearby bases to provide heavy LBA attacks and the resupply convoys, some with carrier escorts, got shredded. If NZ had been more like PH, then Dude could be coming up with new names for Wellington and Auckland. I'm sure he has figured a way to do it better next time, but this time he unfortunately put himself in a position where his fleet could be unlucky.

He has performed best in China and that is often overlooked. I'd predict that if he wins this thing (and I doubt he will) it will be because of his successes in China--and then Burma, Malaysia and India built on the China success--not the Pacific. However, there is some rough terrain on the way to India after beating China. That's why the fleet could have been helpful in the west -- a more rapid invasion of India by sea, for instance. The allies weren't going to move out of NZ before 1943 anyways and 150,000 Japanese troops in Ceylon/India could do a lot of damage.

I am just wondering if, in order to be able to take Chunking , you'd better keep all thoses chineses pocket alive. If I read correctly the manual and docs, every killed chinese unit will be rebuild for free at 1/3 strenght at Chunking after 3 month ( or is it 6 .. ).

Anyway, it sound like you are currently giving Chungink reinforcement. Perhaps that is the reason why it is nearly impossible to take...

This is probably true but Medck has a point that they divisions could have been used better elsewhere. Perhaps taking out Malay and Singapore.

I don't think Chungking can last three more months. After the destruction of these pockets, I can then move several more divisions to Chungking. I'll have 500,000 men not to mention tons of tanks and artillery.

That's my point exactly. If he had the carriers he lost in NZ, he could sweep the British fleet aside and thin out your front lines some in Burma as you had to at least think he could invade India by sea. Now you have everything and he has an incredibly reduced IJN. That is the strategic failure of the NZ campaign.

In my opinion Witp_dude did a great job and sure made for some exciting and tense reading. I only hope he is getting as much enjoyment out of the game that I am reading about it.

What is most amazing is that Dude hasn't failed in this AAR. The Hirohito stratgey has failed in the Pacific and Dude gave it his best shot. However, in China it is a different story -- Dude is running rampant and this is the one area there is little mention of from Hirohito. If Dude wins this thing, it will be in spite of the Hirohito strategy and all due to his own skill in running the ground war in Asia. He still has a long way to go, but he does have his act together and is far from inept.

And I thought the PH invasion was pretty flawless; I was sceptical that it could be done, but Dude certainly proved to me that it is within the realm of possibility for a good player facing a good (but outnumbered and initially disadvantaged) opponent. Zeta should get some credit, too, for hanging tough and knowing when to fight - he broke the back of the Hirohito strategy by knowing that NZ was the place to throw his resources. His bombers have been having a field day over Hanoi and he has (hopefully) had almost 12 months to build up Indian and Malaysian defenses. How long will it take to wrap up China? Will Malaysia/India be another PH/China or another NZ? I am quite interested in seeing how it goes.

Status: offline 		Sorry, late at night, I should have worded it better. The fact that Dude has done so well is a credit to him. I, like many others, predicted the strategy would fail. Granted, it gives Japan breathing room when the Allies come roaring back in '43, but it does not win the war.

By saying it did not succeed, I was referring to the strategy, not to Dude himself. I for one was impressed at how far Dude was able to carry it, and I think he can make '44 and '45 very difficult for Zeta. Who knows, he might even be able to prolong the war past '46 (assuming WitP would model this).

And to think that Witp_dude is doing two separate pbem games based off of this guy's strategy, he'd be alittle nicer. Nothing like investing time and energy only to get insulted. Currently I am only playing one game of WiTP. I do not want to try Hirohito strategy again. Maybe Hirohito-lite.

Yeah, Hirohito wasn't too much help other than providing a vague outline. A Hirohito-lite plan might work better:

1. Don't invade Anchorage. This kind of took care of itself in my match but the original Hirohito plan called for invading Anchorage. This is not a good idea as it just makes your supply lines that much longer. Dutch Harbor should be enough.

2. Don't invade New Zealand. Too far away from anything. Take Noumea though as this will help delay the Allied advance up into the Solomans.

3. Take out Malay and Singapore at the start. Skip the Phillippines and put five or six divisions into this area. Should fall pretty quickly. Then these units can be moved east for the invasion of Pearl Harbor.
