I originally thought this game was WAY overpriced which kept me from buying it.
However, I broke down and got it. My advise------Run, don't walk to buy it. Never has been anything like it !

I have UV. Does this game cover more. Or is there a difference between UV and WITP?

Also I liked running UV at 1100x700(something like that) I read somewhere that the resolution is set at 800x600. If so is it does that make a difference in picture quality

A ton of enhancements form UV. Covers the entire war in the Pacific from Dec 7 1941 to 1946. The game scale is basically the same as UV though. Every unit, ship, air group is there.

WITP is the last wargame you will ever buy. Or at least for the next 5 years or so.

This game covers the entire Pacific Theatre. Is there similiarities with UV? Yes.

Should you still want this game? Yes, oh yes. My precious, It's ours, isn't it?

I will buy this game. Thank you for your opinion. If nothing else to support people who created this type of computor game. But what about the graphics are they better or worse than UV

Same here. Another good thing - you can hold baby on the left hand and play game at the same time. Cures all CEO's wining and grinding.

This game doesn't cost that much. I paid $65.00 some odd for Pacific War in the early 90's - '93 I think when I got it. This game is far more detailed, accurate, and playable, if one can call a game like this playable. If you are looking for a quick in and out game - try something else. If you like full bore chess for grown ups, this is it.

I guess for 80.00 bucks I want it all, great graphics, excellent AI, and very thoughtful stragety. I know the later is there. but I have not heard anything positive about the other points

The game cost USD70 and I had to buy a new computer (equivlanet US1,100 with ATI and Soudblaster) to hear the music while playing and I consider every cent spent worth it - WITP is my only hobby - I don't smoke, womanise, gamble or drink.

Graphics are the same as Uv. AI is only average, and it is possible to exploit the AI. The games you really want to play are PBEM games. I am running two of them right now.

One is a team vs. team game and it is a cliffhanger watching the turn results. The other is just getting started and I have no doubt that I will be on the edge of my seat for those results also.

I'll give you an example. The IJN team attempted a landing at Rabaul. They brought a small surface force to screen the transports but unbeknownst to them, we had managed to scrape together a small surface group of our own.

There were no KB battlegroups with 6 CVs, no USN battleships and Avengers; it was just your classic destroyer and light cruiser fight with a few heavy cruisers in it to make things interesting.

In the end, ltfighter and kbullards landings were a success on Rabaul. They managed to effectively keep our guns pointed away from the transports, and towards their screening ships. The one (might have been two) CAs that we had managed to swing the engagements in our favor, but I will tell you that watching those engagements was some of the most nail biting video you could watch in a game.

Every shot counted from the DDs and every torpedo launched was willed towards its target. When the combat screens would come up, you would instantly scan the group to see if they had anything with them with guns that might be able to damage the CAs.

We did this for several turns, and these guys were "on their own" since IJN had major offenses going in other areas, and the USNs CVs were playing cat and mouse with KBs tanker group. Part of KB finally turned up...a day after the US split up and withdrew from the area.

In the end, Feinder and I consider it a small victory on our part even though they did manage to take Rabaul. We managed to sink several irreplaceable surface combatants for the IJN, and although we did lose a few of our own, they will have a harder time without those escorts that were sunk in a few years.

Overall, it was a great couple of days of gameplay...AND IT WAS JUST ONE SMALL BATTLEFIELD IN THE WAR! Can you imagine that over the course of the next 5 years?

Well, my advice...get WitP, and play the AI once or twice to get a feel for the game, and then find someone to PBEM with.

Okay, I agree with the no smoking, drinking or gambling. But, man, you have to womanize. If you don't you end up like ... ME!

Team play is set up like this...

Feinder and I are the Allies, ltfighter and kbullard are the Axis.

Feinder controls everything except the US, which is run by yours truely.

Don't remember exactly where kbullard and ltfighter have their lines of responsibility drawn, but basically the players just agree to what each is going to control.

Turn sequence is like this:

IJN Player 1 makes his moves, and saves the game. Does NOT finish the turn. Sends the turn to IJN Player 2.

IJN Player 2 makes his moves and Finishes the turn, then forwards it to Allied Player 1.

Allied Player 1 makes his moves, and saves the game. Does NOT finish the turn. He then forwards it to Allied Player 2.

Allied Player 2 makes his moves, and then finishes the turn. He then forwards it to IJN Player 1 who executes the turn. This creates a 001 file, which he then forwards back to the Allied players, so they watch the replay and piss and moan until they get the completed turn back the next day.

Allied players both need to know the password for their side, and the Axis players will need to share their password with each other also.

It really does make for an interesting game. You do have to share resources, as well as coordinate with each other from time to time. Its easier for Feinder and I to do this, since its a local call for us and we can plan over the phone instead of by email (although we do that too).

There isn't time for anything else! As soon as the mrs. hits the hay I boot up. Yes, i am a closet game player. This game makes you use your mind, think- Not just for now, for this turn, but for turns weeks, months, and years ahead. There is nothing better then a plan, that started as a small seed, goes as planed or moreso.

I agree that game is overpriced. Sure it might be good, I don't have it yet, but still overpriced. And with this big price I'm not even able to get printed manual! If I want to print manual (how many pages? 200, 400, 600?) it will cost me extra maybe 20+ euros because of ink and paper. Not good. So, game will cost about 70 euros + 20 euros. Almost 90 euros. That IS much for the game. BTW, I normally pay 35-45 euros for games. I'm working, so I do have extra money, but many students don't have as much money to spend.

I would rather buy this game in shop than overpriced netshop. I though digital copies are CHEAPER because there is now package or manual. Why this isn't the case?!?

I almost bough this game couple weeks ago, but it didn't accept my VISA (working everywhere else). It could be because I have scandic letters in my name. Maybe I will buy it if it will accept my VISA. Stil I think it is overpriced. Hopefully it will be everything I will pay for.

No. It is not overpriced. i was thinking about buying PS2 to play PTOIV. (I don't know how i missed PacWar or UV). Anyway i was browsing this forums, reading posts and finally decided that:

1. $70 bucks for around 1,000 hours of playing is well worth the price (or even more).
2. Folks who put their heart and soul in this game deserve to be financed so they will keep making great games.
3. price was set up that high to repel general "nice picture - cool sound, wack, wack - my joistik just broke" public, cause learning curve is very steep.
4. You don't need manual. Read this board, and ask.

Now after i played it around a moth:

1. I love it.
2. I dont think it is overpriced, worth every penny.

I dumped my old Athlon XP 2000 to work (my turns took ****load of time to execute) and got myself AMD64 3500 S939 with 1G dual ch RAM and all bells and whistles. Now one turn against AI takes around 3 minutes which is great stuff, cause you need to make at least 1800 turns to complete the game.

So get yourselff a decent rig and submerge into sweet slumber, he-he.

OR

Keep your old one and submerge into sweet slumber, he-he.

Keep in mind that this is very small and very specific market, companies usually do not make big sales here even with superb products like WitP, wargamers are not so numerous breed as doom&etc. players and virpilots. In order to keep games like WitP coming we have to invest money into this business otherwise it will die and we will be forced to make wargames ourselves… and that’s much more expensive fun… think that out of 80 bucks you pay for this game 30 bucks are investment.

Yes yes... I'm just inches away grapping my VISA and making order. My pay day was yesterday and I got better bonus than I though. So... Maybe maybe.. :D

I've been lurking here some while and it seems almost every one are satisfied with the game. I also play Panther Games HTTR and plan to buy their upcoming Airborne Assault: Conquest of the Aegean too. Damn. Two good games and so little time to spend with them.

There is no better AI than a PBEM player, forget the AI and let some of these
players teach you the ropes, use the AI for practicing things but limit it there
as you will learn bad habits that your PBEM players will exploit.

And it is the best strategic game out there.

I really don't understand the price issue any more when I see games like Half Life2 and MOH PA selling for $50.00+, and people claim they finished them in 4 days.

Nah. bin Laden likes young boys and blows goats.

The only thing that bothered me about the price for WitP was that I had counted for over two years on paying $69.99 for it, and then when it was published, I had to pay another ten bucks for the CD.
