This is the AAR that TimTom and I have decided to start. He plays as Japs and I play as allies. Date: mid june of 43. The Scenario is only two moths long so this won´t be a long AAR.

Well, well, well...life is beautiful. Compared to the game I´m playing in Scenario 19, I have HUGE (and when I say HUGE it´s HUGE) airpower and LCU to bring the war to wherever I want.

My objective is to win, scoring more points than my enemy, who has 1500 points more than me. To manage this, the main strategy to follow is to invade some valuable land bases

I´ve been wasting some time studing my forces and they are knocking. More than 60s air units, 2 marine divisions, aussies, many sea beas...However I still have to win this battle so I´ve been thinking to get a plan, a strategy. My inspiration comes from the Gettysburg battle, so I´l follow Gn. Lee plans to beat my enemy. My strategy has three branches.

First, the conquest of Munda: Operation Final Countdown

Munda is the first step to control Bouganville and New Georgia. IJN bases here would be isolated.

Second, the naval assault of Lae and Finschafen: Operation Popeye

For me Finschafen is like GG in scenario 19, the key of New Guinea. If I get this one, it would be very difficult to supply the troops in NG and from this point Allies can reach anyware either with naval or air forces.

Third, (still planning this one): Operation Willy Fog

The final step to win the battle and the scenario

During the last turns I´ve been bombarding the main bases of the theater. It seems that my enemy has decided to concentrate his airforces in Rabaul. No sights of his fleet also.

Although many would think that with so much power is easy to get the air superiority, first there are several logistic problems related with Air support, supplies and fuel. So many aircrafts need air support and very high levels of supplies.

Supplies

Level bombers literally drink supplies when flying bombing missions. And I´m suffering lack of transports...More than 10 days until I get reinforces

Air support

So many planes need bases. I have to fly C-47 missions to transport base forces to front bases. Still in the process...

Fuel

There are no TK or AO yet!. This would mean that I have to cut my missions in the front areas if I want to start an invasion

Aircraft

We have aircraft but they´re all spread throught the whole map. I´ve been transferring lots of aircraft but some of them were damaged in the proccess. Need time, suplies and support to get them ready again.

Operational losses

I´m attacking unprotected objectives at high level to reduce losses and damaged aircraft (a real problem). However, operational losses are high, specially in the heavies. In one day I lost 7 B-17 (op. losses). This means the replacement rate of 1 month!

Morale

It´s quite low in many squadrons. Half P-38s have morale below 50. The same with the heavies. Need time to get them ready!

Time

All this logistic problem will be solved in some days but precisely that is the thing Allies don´t have!

My opponent is decided to take some advantages from the situation. Two attempts:

1) A surprise attack against GG where my carriers were docked. He put 1 bomb into a CVE but it was costly. I lost 22 planes, he lost 42. I had a strong CAP, not in numbers but in type of planes. Two things
- P-38, F4F suffer very much against good pilots of the IJN
- F4U are almost unbeatable : as an old japanese player I knew this that´s why I put some of them as carrier based aircrafts.

If I were the Japanese player I would probably act the same way. If he had had more planes and I hadn´t had the F4U the strike would have been a success. Anyway, I still consider it as a minor Jap victory.

2) It seems that he will ride DObadura in the next turn.´It was plenty of P-38 so I evacuated them to Australia to get some rest. I´m mining it, putting submarines close to the base and some avengers are ready to strike if the run fails.

I´m almost ready to start the invasion. Final Countdown has just begun.

During the raid to Dobadura, the Kongo is hit by two torpedoes from patrolling PTs and the run is aborted. However, my aircraft fail to locate the targets!.

Rabaul

Heavily hit by heavies. Again a surprise attack in a day with thrunderstorms. We repeat the attack as Op Final Countdown is about to occur.

Munda

More airstrikes to soften the defenses.

Gili-Gili

The entire fleet sails out to sink the damaged Kongo. F4U and F4F will provide aircover. More than 120 figthers available. Risk: the bomber from Rabaul but they were just hammered last turn and my CAP is quite strong. The real risk are the submarines (I think)

Naval attacks

This is terrible. My B-25J the core of my long range light bombers are just USELESS to bomb ships. They got pilots with more than 60 experience points and nothing!!!. More than 100 air missions have been flown and NOTHING

This is not the first time. In my other AAR, my B-25 were useless for naval attack. Wirraways were quite more useful for this purpose.

Timtom is going to be out until Tuesday so I have time to write some reports

The battle for the Kongo has ended

My carriers sailed to a point between Finschafen and Gasmata to locate and sink the Kongo, but surprise!, the rest of the TF hit Allied troops in Salamaua. VERY risky. He was unable to retire quickly and the TF was located and attacked by my carried based Avengers.

However, this that could have ended with the Kongo sunk and some of the others ships damaged or even sunk, was only a minor victory for the allies.

Despite enemy ships were without LCAP and were attacked by more than 50 missions of the Avengers, only the CL Isuzu was sunk.

My Carriers are now retreating to GG, we can´t spend much fuel which is very scare and it´s going to be needed for invasion operations. Enemy is aware of our presence and one bomb or more probably one submarine torpedo could put out of action one unprotected CVE.

Enemy redeploying

Some aircraft have been transfered to Madang and maybe Gasmata or Kavieng. This only could Vals and Kates to strike invasions forces in NG or fighters to provide LCAP to front bases. Some enemy air opposition has been found recently.

Submarine warfare

Quite a lot action here. Many DD are patrolling the hot areas and they got some success. 4 IJN subs lost. On the other hand, he´s got more success with his subs than with his ships
1 BB out of action (36 sys damage)
1 AK sunk
2 AP, 1 AK and one DD badly damaged

My submarines have failed every torpedo that has been launched. Only succeed in sinking AG. Very good guys!

B-25

As I told before they´re the main naval attack bombers. They carry 500 lb bombs, have 16 hexs range and more than 60 poinst of experience.
However they are useless against warships (not hits yet) but they got some success hitting the enemy AP

Enemy convoys

Some of them have been detected in Rabaul´s port or close to it. B-25 put on alert and also some YPB-24 which have more than 70 experience points.

New fighters

F4U, Spits, P-47 are superior to Zeros. F4U will provide LCAP to landings while P-47 and Spits are now patrolling main bases which are packed full of aircrafts. PM has about 600 and Lunga 450. Nice objectives!

The operation has begun: the invasion of Munda is on his way.

Much effort has been invested to soften the Munda defenses. By now the Jap Rgt. (229), has to be weak.
The entire 37th Division is now landing in the beach, supported by elements of the 25th, the second echelon of the invasion.
Three transports TF are around the island, with DD and 3CL acting as close escort
A surface TF with 3 BB, 3 CA and 5 destroyers are patrolling the area, to avoid the enemy counter attack.
3 Marine squadrons (F4U) are protecting the landings from the sky, with more than 50 P-38 as high cover.

Air assault on Nadzab

503 Rgto. has been paratrooped to Nadzab destroying the enemy forces defending the place. 1 EAS is being air transported to increase airfield size. This would be the advance base to LCAP future sea landings in NG.

Heavy bombers

Again visit Rabaul, destroying a few planes on the ground. The defences are almost crack downed
Some air and naval activity is detected around Buka. As Buna is only 9 hexes from our landings in Munda, some heavies are sent to bomb the place.

Salamaua

Forts are heavy here. Send some pioneers to reduce them. More air attacks to disrupt the enemy as 3 Rgt. of aussies attack again.

Submarine warfare

I have put a great effort to sink his submarines before the sea invasion and I get some success. I think 5 jap subs are resting in the bottom of the ocean.

Well, my Combat replay seems to be different from Timtom´s combat report. Look at this report. SS I-177 was previously hit 2 times (couple days ago)

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 06/29/43

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sub attack at 32,35

Japanese Ships
SS I-177, Shell hits 2, on fire, heavy damage

Allied Ships
DD Gridley
DD Woodworth
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
And it sunk but when I look at the statistics, it appears that it has survived or even worse, it was not attacked.

Have same suspects regarding to air and naval attacks. . I guess I can come up against this. I would probably ask my enemy to send my the combat report txt file

Munda

Ordered first attack to prove the defense. Almost everyone in Munda now.

Rabaul

More heavies visiting the airfields to avoid air missions to invasion TFs in Munda

Submarines

Quite ineffective...only AG are sunk. On the opposite side, IJN subs. sank a DD (with 3 torps) from a ASW patrol TF. And he escaped undamaged!!!. There are still heroes.

Salamaua

In a week or so I´ll be drinking Japanese captured sake, forts reduced to 3, one enemy regt. retreated to Lae

Enemy actions

I think my enemy is fighting at the highest level. He has realized the advantanges of dispersing airplanes all arond the map. Airfield attacks by heavies are quite uneffective against almost empty airfields.

The same regarding to surface TF. Many TF disperse the naval attacks. Also DD TF are good avoiding B-25 bombs and dimishing their morale with the AA fire.

The attempt to strike GG is very risky but he can get some VP from Allied damaged ships (not in my case) and he has just delayed Op. Popeye.

Here is the map of the situation

Thunderstorms

It´s turn numeber 16 or 17. By now he surely has received the CV and two more BB. We have to be very careful until new reinforces arrive (in two days).

However, I have a little surprise for Timtom : my carrier group is going to launch an airstrike to the surface TF which stubbornly stand in the middle of the Solomon Sea.
I would be in the middle of the sea and alone but my CVs are packed with F4U and F4F to provide strong CAP.

I´m going to fast transport some troops in Finchsafen which is lightly protected. For me it´s a very important base. Let´s see what happen.

I have another surprise, but not for this turn. I´m still planning it.

Recen recons discovers 150 fighters in Rabaul! and 60 bombers in Buka. I got to do something about this!

Not much to say...

Thunderstoms prevented any important flights. No surprise attack to surface TF

I ordered the CV to withdraw and avoid subs. Next time they show their teeths they will be supported with the new carriers that come tomorrow

Enemy surface TF is still a menace, I guess he will retire but he can also hit GG, Finchsafen or Munda or Dobadura. Maldición!!!. He is delaying my plans!

Many enemy planes around. Heavy airstrikes to airports in Rabaul, Shortlands and Buka to gain air superiority. After that, my second surprise: a massive air attack to Rabaul´s port, full of enemy ships!

Enemy launched a strong air offensive. I think he was expecting my CV to stay in the middle of the ocean because every attack was a naval one. Instead of this, I was expecting some kind of airport attack (remember that Lunga and PM have around 500 aircrafts) so I increased CAPs in airports which turned to be a good thing if we see the results

Enemy aircraft destroyed

28 Vals
12 Zero
9 Lily (on the ground, Buka)
9 Nell
8 Oscar
5 Betty
4 Dinah
3 Kate

The bad thing came from a ASW patrol which I forgot to set to "retirement allowed". 3 DD sunk. Kates and Vals are still very effective.
Heavy losses in the P-38 groups : 10 lost

Deploying forces

Now that Munda landings have finished, I´m moving my resources to GG, the base from which I will launch the next step of my strategy: Operationg Popeye

Some new tactics

Gili Gili

B-25 (from the NG area) will be grouped in GG and will attack ground targets (troops, airports). No more useless naval attacks. Buka, Rabaul, Short all these objectives now under range

More naval units arrived to GG today to prepare landings in Lae.

Ground troops ready: New Guinea Force plus one more brigade. Second wave, 2 Bde from Buna, 1 Aussies Eng and 114 Eng Rgt. Two more bdes on reserve.

Dobadura

P-38 deployed in Dobadura and GG. From GG they will escort B-25. From Dobadura, LCAP landings or Sweep Rabaul when needed

Nadzab

Nadzab is size two now. Boomerangs, P-47 and more will provide LCAP to landings in Lae. In a few days, Beauforts will be transfered here to attack enemy naval objectives (they got torpedoes!)

Salamaua

More air attacks on Garrison there which somehow it´s being reinforced by airplanes?

Sorry for no post in the last days. Some things happened

A major naval attack in Buna

He tried the impossible, strike Buna when his ships had already been spotted. My BB were around and he olny got CA in his TF.
Moreover, my naval planes based in Dobadura finished the job. 2 or 3 IJN CA are sunk
with 4 DD.
Allied losses are 2 DD and one heavily damaged. His long lance torpedoes were unable to hit my BB and CA. Good!

Naval TF surprised when raiding Finchschafen

Again my TBF and SBD attacked a surface TF near Hoskins base. Some ships damaged including 2 BB. Obviously he his ships were unable to retire quickly to Rabaul, so my bombers took off to fish some ships

Lae and Short invasions are going to be conducted at the same time

I think I´m risking too much. If I split my forces he can strike my with everything he got and defeat me. It would be his last chance.

But, he has only 2 BB to smash my forces. I got 5 BB (2 for the Short. attack and 3 for the Lae invasion)
His lethal weapon, the IJN CV carrier force, is still dangerous but I will cover the sky of Short. Island with an umbrella of F4U, P-38 and P-40. And Lae will be covered by USN carried based aircraft, P-47 and some F4U.

My bases are weak now and they are almost with no CAP so he can bomb some of them, destroying many aircrafts on the ground. But in no way he can change the war in doing so. Moreover, my heavies keep attacking his airports.

Anyway, risky operations and I´m not totally convinced in doing both at the same time but, I still go on.

It has been a interesting battle, with some luck to the IJN. Here are the forces I got at the beginning and at the end
All fighters CAP at 70%, except F6F at 100%

CV Essex 36 F4F, 36 SBD, 9 TBF END-------17, 17, 8
CV Saratoga 48 F4U, 24 F4F, 18 TBF END-------41, forget, forget
CVL Princeton 9F4F, 11, SBD, 9 TBF, END-------6, 9, 7
CVL Independence 24 F4F, 9 SBD END-------11, 10
CVL Cowpens 21 F6F, 9 TBF END--------9, 4
CVE Altamira 12 F4F, 10 SBD END--------12,5
CVE Copahee 24 F4U END--------21
CVE Sangamon 9 F4F, 11 SBD, 9 TBF END--------3, 8, 8
CVE Suawannee 12 F4F, 14 SBD END--------24, 20

So, I had to have:
*21 F6F level CAP 100%---21 CAP
*72 F4U level CAP 70%--- 50 CAP
*126 F4F level CAP 70%---88 CAP

150 Planes CAP but my actual CAP was quite low. Reasons:
1) Weather????
2) I was standing in an island??? (with no base)
3) CVE Suwannee got full of aircraft, don´t know why, (more than 110%) and his airgroups were unabla to take off

Actual CAP numbers

Allied aircraft
F4F-3 Wildcat x 12 ---Expected 74 of both (CVE Suwanee unable), so CAP level reached only 39%***
F4F-4 Wildcat x 29 ---
F6F Hellcat x 14 -----Expected 21 or so, CAP level only reached 62%***
F4U-1 Corsair x 27---Expected 50 or so, but CAP level only reached 38%****

More or less, CAP level were 60% of the expected CAP. If this was caused because reason number 2, it is a great mistake, if it was caused by reason number 1, no way man!!!.

Results (see pictures)

Japanese lost 237 aircraft and CV Shokaku is on fire (one 500 lb bomb)
USN lost 150 aircraft or so, CV Essex is on fire (Damaged 30, 7, 12), one CVE has 11,0,9 damage

IJN minor victory but now his squadrons are quite depleted while my naval bombers are still operational (I can increase SDB and TBF numbers by using the Marine´s ones) and my level bombers are undamaged (but tired and with low morale) and can carry on supporting land invasions.

Operation Popeye

All troops were safely landed in Short. GOt almost a division there and two engineers ready to reduce forts. Not many troops defending Short.

Tomorrow my troops will be in Lae beaches. Almost a division. In a couple of days, 2 Bde from Salamaua will join the party and 2 Aussies Bde are being fast transported from Buna

If nothing stops my plans, both bases will be mine in a couple of weeks or so, giving me the VP to beat my enemy. If they failed I still got my strategic reserve, with 2 Marine Divisions ready to strike anywhere.

Well my opponent just surrender. He wants to play scen 8 now.

I think I would have managed a decisive victory. Lae and Shortland would have been mine sooner or later. And the I was planning to occupy Buka with fast transports, Momote by Air (with the paratroops) and the end of opperations would have ended with the assault to Rabaul or Truk with the marines but this was only a guess, I wouldn´t have enough time to do it and my opponent had too many forces to avoid my attempt.

So guys

VICTORIA!!!!! or in English VICTORY!!!!!!!

Now I have looked at his AAR. The last one is a interesting one cos we see the rate of attrition. My transport were having many problems against his CD units and many were damaged. Interesting thing.
