Allied AVs allow you to operate naval search planes from bases where you do not have air support troops. All you need is some supply at that base - you don't need troops.

Many Japanese AVs have their own float planes and can also be used at bases where you do not have air support troops.

Both - you can disband them in a size 3 or larger port, or you can leave them as a task force if the port is smaller than size 3. AVs typically provide between 12 and 18 points of air support. But they only support seaplanes, not land-based planes.

Good luck -

An important question that I was unable to confirm from the rulebook is when planes will launch from AV's and CS's for Japanese. In UV, float planes would only fly at sea from CS's. AV's would only launch planes when docked at a base hex--at least that was my understanding.

Is this true in WITP also?

AV's with float planes make for good sub hunters, just put you AV in a near by port and set all of the float planes on a ASW mission at 1000 ft. Create a ASW TF with MSW's, DD's, PC's, or PG's to attack any subs found.

Forward Recon
Just captured a forward base? send a AV with float planes there to conduct recon of forward areas.

Japanese AVs that have planes on them can also operate at sea. Use some of them as ASW escorts in important convoys (not invasion convoys, because they will get sunk...).

As for forward base use, I would rather fly in a fraction of a base force with air transport. AV is too valuable to risk.

There is a useful article (page 34) in the July-August 1992 edition of Naval Aviation News:

Here's a website that contains more information on US patrol squadrons and seaplane tenders:
