To try something different, I've currently started up a long campaign using a truly airborne force , having modified the german oob to allow me to get Ju 52s and gliders for my core force. Force comprises 2 FJ Companies as follows: HQ - 1 x FJ Sqd, 2 x Recon Patrols, 1 x FO, 2 x Ammo Supply (copied from Lightning scenario so glider carriable)); 3 x FJ Plts - 4 x FJ Sqd, 1 x MG, 1 x Sniper, 1 x Recon Team 1 x AT Plt - 3 x Inf-AT 1 x Mortar Sec - 2 x 81mm Mortars Plus of course enough gliders and Ju 52s to carry it all. Also has a Glider Engineer Plt, 4 x Eng Sqd (8 man)+ 1 x MG. Surprising amount of fun to be had with it, truth be told . First two battles of the Long Campaign were used as a build up (set enemy points to 1, freebee battle) as couldn't get force initially. However, into the third battle now, in France against the British, May 1940, and woah. With a significant number of points tied up in the transports, the british get quite a solid defence to meet me with. Worse still, my poor FJ HQ has to watch as the gliders carrying the all precious ammo caches crashing into the nearest hill, exploding (well okay, the gliders actually flew straight off screen, but I can't quite see 'em applying power to get outta there ), and a good third of the Ju52s either getting shot down or aborting before dropping their loads. So I'm down to 2/3's effective with no resupply. Should prove to be -extremely- entertaining at any rate. Wonder if I'll scrap together a marginal? Think I'll try it for the british and americans as well . It does have the benefit that any vehicle in your core can only ever be damaged or destroyed - you'll never see those annoying extra crews with this one . Anyway, that leads me to a couple of questions and a suggestion .... Would it at all be possible to have glider and paradrop markers just like the artillery bombardments have? With any number of drops to be made, it sure would make life easier . What are the rules for paradrops? I've tried spacing em out, making sure that they're not close to hills or trees, and yet still I watch approximately a 1/3 or more of my planes and gliders abort. Will the patch allowing the changing of a unit to any other type of unit allow one to trade in mech platoon for a airborne platoon, trading up from halftracks to planes? (okay, not exactly realistic, but, heh, fun and easier to do than having to modify the oobs left right and centre ).

A lot of questions Stu... I'll try to answer a few. The patch addresse aircraft going everywhere or disappearing off the map. That will be changed. There is already a routine for setting landing zones or drop zones, but only in the scenario editor, not the generated campaigns. Is that what you are referring to? Since most people do not modify their OOBs it might not be of much use generally, but I'll ask about its inclusion. I think you can trade the ground units easily enough, but I just can't say about aircraft being purchased. I would have to try it to see. I love airborne scenarios. I think your idea is a good one. Wild Bill what I mean by "like the artillery markers" is simply a graphical cue like an artillery piece has when you select a hex for them to bombard - would just make it a bit easier to see just where I'm dropping all my boys . Campaigns already allow you to pick up air transport/gliders as support units for a battle, so it'd get a bit more use than just a lunatic who likes modifying the oobs just about as much as playing I'd hope. I see that glider troops get attacked if they're near any enemy as soon as the glider hits the ground. Any chance of something similar for the paradrops? On that note, in my current battle, my glider engineer platoon ended up landing amongst a fortified british cruiser troop. Ugh. Down 50% just hitting the ground. Such is life .

Good to hear that the aircraft going everywhere is to be addressed though.

It certainly makes for an interesting campaign! Though I'm torn as to whether I use my support points to buy conventional forces to try to break through to the paras or not .
