Not sure 100% but it has something to do with your air superiority over a base.

Hi,

Feinder has given a rather detailed explanation in this thread:
http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/fb.asp?m=751497&key=airbal

To give credit where it's due, Knavey is the one doing most of the research. FWIW, airbal also varies by range. So a sqdn of Zeros projects a diminishing airbal over a range of about 6 - 8 hexes. Can't remember exactly, Knavey is the one with all the notes. But basically, the farther out you go from a base (with a squadron), less you are able to affect airbal. Naturally, it also depends on the number of aircraft in the unit. I don't think it takes into account the other subtleties tho, like exp ect.

So something like this could be for some aircraft type...

Range...Airbal Effect
0 ... 12
1 ... 10
2 ... 6
3 ... 4
4 ... 1
5 ... 1
6+ ... no effect

What is this number used for? Part of the AI player's routines in airstrike calulations?

One of the primary use is supposedly to assist the TF/convoy routing routine. Does not seem to have an impact.
